The blonde girl released a soft yawn as she leaned into the car door of her mother, Rina Shiroko's silver Chevrolet Camaro while the volleyball sports star was driving the vehicle. "Geez, you've been keeping yourself busy and up at five a.m. every morning, any reason?", the blasian albino woman quirked her brow, looking at her daughter with concern and curiosity.
"Yeah, I've been helping two players practice in secret. The one is a genius but the other is still new to the court and rules, well not as much anymore but he's still needs training", the blonde girl admitted, her adoptive mother looking at the girl with a soft chuckle.
"Geez, even when you're injured you pursue your passions. You better not be overworking that knee though", Rina scolded her softly, driving past the neighbourhood.
"No no, don't worry I'm not doing really physical work; I'm just teaching him how to do receives and all. I'm doing theoretical teaching and coaching", the blonde girl assured her mother, knowing well the woman was just looking out for her.
"Alright, that's good to hear", Rina nodded her head in approval. The blasian albino woman parked her car near the entrance of Karasuno, the school filled with little to no students at all.
Erika stepped out of the car, a yawn falling from her lips again. "Bye Rina, I'll see you at home at 7 p.m. latest, I'll cook dinner how does that sound?", the blonde girl offered to her mom sitting in the front seat.
"Hell yeah! Sounds delicious, your cooking is always the best!", Rina grinned, playfully punching her daughter's shoulder. "Now go to your club and enjoy yourself! But don't do anything stupid", Rina encouraged her daughter, letting out a laugh of jovial as she gently pushed her daughters shoulder in affection.
"Okay okay", Erika laughed lightly, the feeling of joy giving little energy as she looked at the woman who took her and her sisters in years ago. "I'll be back at home for dinner, I'll have Ueda pick me up later", Erika waved at Rina, letting her mother know of her plans beforehand.
"Aight, text me if anything goes wrong", Rina grinned, waving at her daughter before she started driving off and in return, the blonde girl waved back to her mom before she started to slowly walk to the partially empty grounds of Karasuno High School.
The sun had fully set in, painting the early morning in its glory as her body soaked in the light. Her manager clothing giving her shield from the late spring chill that slowly settled in the summer heat, the blonde girl eventually spotted a familiar woman she often saw in the club, the gorgeous woman that she and the guys couldn't help but fawn for.
"Hey, Kiyoko", Erika smiled at seeing someone she thought of as a friend.
In return, Kiyoko smiled softly at seeing the blonde first year girl walk to her direction, allowing her to take her time as her injured knee carried her as fast as it could. "Hey Erika, morning", the raven haired female third year student greeted her, a softer smile and expression on her face.
"Morning", Erika greeted her, the two started walking together and laughing as they stepped close to the boys volleyball gymnasium.
Kiyoko's hand caught the handle of the door, opening the door first as her and Erika continued laughing together. "Good morning everybody", Kiyoko greeted the boys, giving them a look of acknowledgment as she continued speaking with Erika.
"Morning everyone", Erika greeted the boys in return as her and Kiyoko walked into the gymnasium, the boys were starting their warmup routines also greeting Kiyoko and Erika (with Tanaka being a little too enthusiastic than usual).
Erika took one of the chairs stacked up to the side of the wall, luckily it was light so it wouldn't put too much strain on her body but reaching for it was still a pain.
"Here, let me help with that", Kiyoko offered, the girl slightly taller than the first year girl in height, her hand reaching to the chair and handing it to the girl with her injured knee.
"Thanks Kiyoko, I appreciate it", the fallen champion smiled sweetly at the older first year girl, before sitting down on her chair, giving her knee a break from standing too long again.
From a distance, Daichi watched the two, his eyes lingering on the blonde girl as she laughed in a carefree manner with their team manager. While Kiyoko was a beauty and even he couldn't deny it as well and it was nice to see the stoic dark haired woman laugh, speak and smile more often, the blonde girl had something in her charm that allured him closer and he couldn't point his finger on it directly.
The Captain however had to keep himself focused, shaking his head out of his thoughts. "Alright, let's get started!", the captain announced, gathering everyone's attention as they were either finished or still in mid warmup. "I'll play on Tsukishima's team to make it three on three", as the captain announced, the blonde girl listened as she lifted her head. 'So he him and Tsukishima are playing a defense team like I suggested?'
"Huh? Is that fair though?", Hinata shot up, asking his captain with a shocked expression and exasperation.
Daichi chuckled at the reaction of the ginger haired first year, a relaxed expression washing over the captains face and body language. "Don't worry, of course it is. Tanaka's got a lot more attack power than me, I won't go easy on you though", the captain assured and warned the first year player.
Erika chuckled softly to herself, knowing well that their defense team was good but they would need a lot more than to beat Shoyo Hinata's determination and Tobio Kageyama's stubbornness, yet she noticed how Ryunosuke Tanaka's eyes narrowed and his lips stayed in a frown knowing well their captains receives and defense were not to be taken lightly.
Taking this opportunity, Kei Tsukishima stepped forward pretending to loudly clear his throat before he started to speak. "Well. The buzzcut or the shorty, who to crush? I mean, challenge first?", making the announcement painfully obvious and loud to the pair, their attention couldn't help but be caught.
'Oh no. What is he planning?' Erika's face straightened as she released an internal sigh. It looked like Kageyama wasn't the only one with an attitude on their team.
"So hard to choose, but I do know that I'd like to save his highness for last", Tsukishima's announcement laced with sarcasm and arrogance, this irked Erika greatly. 'What is this guy's deal?' She asked herself.
"Uhhh Tsukki", Tadashi stepped to Tsukishima, whispering nervously to him. "They can hear you, be careful", the boy with freckles and acne mixed on his cheeks warned his best friend, whom he always stayed close too.
"I know genius, I want them to hear me", the sardonic and sharp witted and minded blonde boy shot back at his best friend, his voice deadpan, his brown eyes narrowed as they stared down at the shorter brunette boy.
An overconfident smirk reappeared on Tsukishima's face as he carried on with his provocation, "I can't wait to watch the king fall apart out there", with that last announcement, Erika did her best to bite down on her tongue as she looked at the blonde boy a distasteful expression.
"Well now", Daichi broke the silence with a soft chuckle, "you've got quite a personality there, don't you?", the captain took note of the blonde boy's caustic nature.
"Geez, salty much?", Erika whispered to Kiyoko, still sitting on her chair next to her and in return, the older manager bent down to listen to her. A hushed chuckle fell from her lips as she whispered back to Erika.
"No shit, this guy really has it out for Kageyama. I wonder what's going to happen now", the dark haired third year female student whispered back, the two girls quickly separated from their little chatter as they continued watching the scene unfold in front of them.
"It'll have to be a pretty great show to top watching him get abandoned by all his loyal subjects last year", the salty haired boy announced. Erika knew this would hit a nerve with Kageyama, knowing of what happened last year despite not seeing it in person herself.
The dark haired setter stayed silent however, knowing well it wasn't wise to argue back with Tsukishima.
"Well well", now it was Ryunosuke Tanaka's turn to talk, his announcement catching the dark haired setter and Shoyo Hinata's attention, watching how the buzzcut second year lightly walked over to them. "Do you hear that you guys? They're talking trash now. That jerk had better just step up", as Tanaka's light hearted announcement faded away, his anger had taken up from the provocation as he was now ready to fight back. "Or he's dead meat!", the second year glared at the blonde, his aura now showing rage as Shoyo backed him up, releasing his tongue and a nasty stare at the sardonic blonde boy.
The sight itself almost made Erika snicker softly, it was entertaining to watch and now she knew, they were not ready to go down that easily.

The game had already commenced, now both Shoyo Hinata and Ryonosuke Tanaka were giving it their all to play against Kei Tsukishima and Tadashi Yamaguchi to prove themselves on the court that they wouldn't be easily taken down.
The sounds of whistles echoed throughout the gymnasium with the sounds of the ball slamming against hands or on the grounds, now followed with Tanaka's loud yells as the second year spiked a ball over the net, the powerful spike shooting through Tsukishima's block that ricocheted off his hand and off of the court landing out of bounds.
Securing his team a point, the whispers of awe and silent praise echoed softly throughout the gymnasium as Shoyo Hinata watched him in awe. Erika watched this and couldn't help but be impressed. 'He's a great example for team and personal morale and offense. Now that's what we need more in this team' the blonde thought to herself as she smiled softly.
However, this victory only fuelled Tanaka with more energy as he threw his sweatshirt off and started to twirl it in the air excitedly.
"Put your shirt on!"
"Yeah calm down!"
"Nobody wants to see that!"
Erika stayed silent. 'Yeah okay, I think we shouldn't fuel his ego too much then' The fallen champion watched how the rambunctious second year continued swirling his shirt in the air while Kiyoko barely had her attention on him.
"This is what happens when you get Tanaka too worked up", Daichi warned everyone, a friendly smile still present on his features while the blonde boy scoffed, his features twisted in a disagreeable motion.
The game continued on, now the toss came from the opposing team as Tanaka saved the ball with a receive. Shoyo Hinata stood in anticipation as he knew it was his turn to make a spike and the ball went to Kageyama's direction.
"Hinata!", Kageyama called to his teammate, making a set for him. The ginger haired boy ran to it to take his chance, running until he firmly planted his feet onto the floor and jumping high into the air.
Seeing how high the boy could jump, Kiyoko's eyes widened at the sight and even Erika and the other boys of the Karasuno team who stood on the sight couldn't help but watch in awe of Hinata's high jump, one that held power and strength.
However, at the moment of believed victory, Shoyo Hinata spiked the ball that was supposed to be over the net but unfortunately had ricocheted off of Kei Tsukishima's hand, shooting off of his goal and bouncing off the floor.
As they landed on the floor, Tsukishima stared down at the ginger haired boy with presumptuous smirk. "You took me by surprise before, you have a really nice jump there. Now if only you were about a foot taller you'd be a real superstar. Better start taking your vitamins", the caustic blonde boy mocked the ginger boy who gritted his teeth in anger and frustration.
"Whatever! One more!", Shoyo challenged him, not wanting to let the taller blonde boy get under his skin.
As the game continued, Shoyo Hinata could only try to spike through Kei Tsukishima's blocks but the view of the summit was too far for him to reach, a dream blocked by an obstacle of height and sardonic remarks that attempted to stab at his self confidence.
Erika could see the growing frustration from the ginger haired boy who possessed amazing athletic abilities but a shorter height than a majority of his team, a frustrating paradox to possess.
'Tsukishima's blocks are good, however he's not very ambitious but he's good at annoying and taunting his opponents though'
The blonde boy turned to Kageyama after he was surrounded and praised by not only his best friend but also the captain himself. He taken the chance to taunt the so-called King of the Court who stood silently on the other side of the net.
"You better snap out of it buddy or you're gonna keep getting blocked", Tsukishima taunted the so-called "King of the Court". "Why not give them one of your 'Royal Sets'? The kind that wipes out your opponents and your teammates?"
Erika almost cringed in how Tsukishima took a little too much pleasure in feeding his ego by taunting and degrading Kageyama. Sure, if he didn't like him that's one thing but to continuously taunt and jeer at someone for their past mistakes, it never made Erika feel good but she knew that she was one to talk when she held onto grudges and ghosts of her past. And plus Kageyama was far from perfect, he still had perfectionism and control issues over the court and he still had to acknowledge and understand his teammates better to do his sets.
"Shut your mouth", barely giving him the satisfaction of turning to him, Tobio Kageyama walked away from Tsukishima and from the net.
The next game came on. "Your serve, Tadashi!", Daichi announced to the first year, allowing the brunet boy to follow a serve but unfortunately it hit the net and lost their team a point.
Tsukishima released a "tsk" while Tadashi rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Oops, sorry Tsuki", he apologized sheepishly to his best friend since childhood, but the Captain encouraged him to shake off his simple mistake.
As it was Kageyama's teams turn, the dark haired setter leaned down to pick up the ball meant for their team. His hand gripping it tightly while his face wore determination, "We don't need quick attacks. Time to win", he muttered to himself, hoping to use his next option as a solution to their victory.
Going to the back of the court, Kageyama spun the ball in his hand and bounced it on the floor several times with intensity to strengthen his concentrate.
"Alright! You got this! Do it!", Shoyo Hinata cheered on Kageyama. The others stayed silent in anticipation as they along with the blonde girl watched in anticipation for the jump serve the genius setter was about to throw.
So, Kageyama took the chance, the setter threw the ball into the air and ran a few steps forward, taking the jump as his hand slammed on the ball into the air and letting it fly on the court. Determination and adrenaline pumping through the setter's veins as he made the serve strong, but it wasn't powerful enough to break the barrier of Daichi Sawamura's receive.
The defense had taken aback both Shoto Hinata and Tobio Kageyama while Erika sat down, her eyes widened slightly on surprise as she watched how the captains receive stopped Kageyama's jump serve. Even though it was only a jump serve from a genius first year that could be stopped by a powerful receive, the blonde girl did admit she was quite impressed at this.
"Tadashi!", Kei signalled to his friend, setting the ball into the air.
"Leave it to me!", Tadashi called back, taking the initiative as he spiked the ball over the net and Shoyo's weak receive sent the ball over bounds.
Erika remembered watching in practice everyone's skills in offense and defense, and right now Daichi was the most powerful set of defense for the team. It was only fair enough that a powerful asset in offense that Hinata and Kageyama had in their team would have their current opponent be a defense shield.
"Did you think I would be a weak spot?", Daichi turned to Kageyama, looking at the young setter who only held a look of frustration and determination. "I may not have as much raw talent as you, but I've been training on receives for a lot longer than you have"
An aura of confidence is noticeable in Daichi Sawamura as he positioned himself in a receiving stance ready to take on any power serve that Kageyama would throw. "You won't break through that easily", he smirked, now ready and prepared.
"No wonder this guy is the captain", Erika spoke softly to herself, quite amazing at how Sawamura could not only hold his team together but be a pillar of power that helped build his team back up from the stones that crumbled from their former glory. This guy was serious about building back Karasuno and the blonde girl couldn't help but admire that and be in awe as she watched it.
"Your grace", Tsukishima called out to Kageyama, using a mocking name of royalty and calling to him. "Shouldn't you be taking this seriously?", he asked the question to the genius setter, yet the talented setter only remained silent this time.
Erika clenched her teeth, doing her best to keep silent so she wouldn't end up snapping at Tsukishima, knowing well when her anger was released things would not go well. "Tsukishima this enough, why are you so adamant on egging Kageyama?", she and the blonde boy have talked in practice, yet it was only polite as she helped him in his receives and she was familiar with his sarcastic attitude and his less than perfect ambition, he seemed to also know of her yet he never once remarked on her past as a champion. So why was he doing it with Kageyama?
Tsukishima only stayed silent when Erika asked him the question, his lips straightening into a small frown. "Ms. Nationals? No offence, why do you defend such a guy for bad behaviour when you possibly know well for his royal selfishness?", Tsukishima remarked back to Erika, scoffing softly.
"Chill out man! Like Erika said, why do you keep picking on the guy? What the hell is with the freaking nickname?", Shoyo backed up on Erika's statement, the ginger haired male having enough of the sardonic attitude that easily came from the blonde boy that also wanted to crush his ego and confidence in this small game.
"What for?", Tsukishima smirked, pointing his finger to Kageyama. "Do you even know why everyone started calling him the king of the court?", the high and mighty attitude now belonged to the taller blonde boy as Tobio Kageyama was now silent, fear and guilt eating him alive in his gut as his head once hanging high enough to look down on others, now hung low as the memories of his past started to come to him.
"I just thought his enemies called him that, because he's a really good player and well everybody was so afraid of him", Shoyo answered him, his face softening slightly as he gave his answer which was partially true but didn't relate to the whole story.
This however made Tsukishima chuckle haughtily and loudly, "That's a common misunderstanding, but it's just not true", he answered, knowing well of his own and Tadashi's witness of Kageyama's game itself yet he continued his cruel yet rude awakening taunting. "Well, if the rumors are to be believed, that his nickname the 'King of the Court' was given to him by the other players of Kitagawa First. Yeah, that's right. By his own teammates", as Tsukishima continued explaining to Hinata, his head slightly angled to the shorter male now aimed in a taunting manner to the once dictatorial setter who was now standing behind them, silent as the past that haunted him was now brought in an unfriendlier reminder.
"The truth is, they were not paying him a compliment but calling him a tyrant. I've been hearing about it for a long time, but now that I've seen him play, I'm convinced. He got benched at the finals because he was a domineering power tripping dictator", as Tsukishima continued to reveal the truth of Kageyama's past.
Tsukishima wasn't wrong, Erika could still see the habits of the past etched into Tobio's playing style. How him and Shoyo would argue about his stubbornness and his high and mighty attitude, it wasn't hard to see but the possible unintentional hunger for victor that once came from passion and willingness to learn eventually turned him into a tyrannical dictator.
Erika was all too familiar with players like Kageyama himself, some who have changed in her court she once played with but some who used her talent only for victory.
Everyone was silent as they listened to Tsukishima's explanation, how Kageyama's behavior had lead to a short coming and their loss of a chance at Nationals. How he was once a pillar of a light that burnt others around him of his passionate fire that caused his confidence to burn down, replacing it with simple arrogance of his talents.
"That's why you won't try a quick attack. You're still shaken up over what happened that day", Tsukishima observed, knowing well Tobio Kageyama's silence was telling of his guilty past actions and behavior.
Erika stayed silent, listening to Tsukishima's words. He was not wrong, Kageyama suffocated his teammates of his commands and behavior and the consequences of his actions caught up to him, yet she understood. There were times her behavior had hurt others where she didn't mean too, yet the damage was done and she couldn't reverse it, it was too late too anyway.
"You know what? I've had enough of your smarty ass", Tanaka stepped forward, his eyes narrowing up at the third year who was mocking and tearing down Kageyama, wanting to put Tsukishima in his place but he was stopped by the interruption of his captain whom he respected and feared.
"Tanaka", the buzzcut second year turned to Daichi, who only gave him a gentle shake on his head, not to be stern or to leave him in fear but just in a gentle manner for the second year not to speak or threaten just yet. The buzzcut held an expression disappointment while Tsukishima had a smug expression on his face with the captain of the team on his side.
"Well why bother setting if there's no one there to spike it", Kei Tsukishima remarked, the haughty satisfied smile still planted on his face while Tanaka was growling in anger, feeling himself close to exploding on the boys "smart ass" attitude that he greatly disliked.
"You're right", a confirmation of Tobio Kageyama's answer brought the gymnasium to silence once again. Everyone in the court had their ears open, their attention now on the genius setter who stood at the back further away from the other players. "The thought of nobody being there to back me up. It terrifies me, alright?", there was hidden vulnerability in the genius setter's voice as he confessed, his hands balling into fists as his head was still lower from his high and mighty gaze.
"Yeah, but that was in middle school", there was a sudden cut in the silence as Shoyo Hinata started to speak. His brown hues that reflected the golden sun of summer gave Kageyama an expression of assurance and gentle determination. "Your sets are going to reach me, no question about it", the shorter ginger haired male shook his head.
Tobio was silent, taken aback by the words Shoyo had spoken to him. "After that! The only problem is how to get past this jerk-hole!", with that declaration from the ginger haired boy who represented summer, the captain and the buzzcut winger spiker couldn't help but let our small chuckles of laughter and snickers; even Erika on the side couldn't help but laugh a little as she covered her mouth softly to muffle the sounds.
Upon finding the courage to speak more boldly of his mind, Shoyo marched towards the setter he once found his rival on the court now turned to his ally this time encouraging him. "You need to kick Tsukishima's ass, join the volleyball club and become the setter. Just like we planned", as Shoyo countered, knowing well of their current goal and bringing Kageyama back to reality to complete it.
A fierce look in his eyes was prominent as he pointed towards himself, "Then you have to send the ball to me. It's not that complicated", with that order coming from his teammates shorter than him, Tobio now had his all too familiar signature irritated scowl as his eye twitched.
"Oh shut up", Kei Tsukishima interrupted, his voice losing satisfaction but now was replaced with annoyance. "That over-the-top annoying little attitude of yours is disgusting", the sardonic blond boy spat out, before he pivoted his heel and strutted away from the net.
Erika scowled, having enough as the words finally came from her mouth. "At least it's better than having your smartass on the court, if you don't take things seriously then you'll lose and I don't think your ego will enjoy that", the blonde girl suddenly spoken, she herself was even taken aback by the words that came out of her mouth.
The other players of Karasuno even were stunned into silence as the blond boy walked to the back of the court to serve the ball, his golden hazel hues glared at her behind his glasses as a scowl fell from his mouth. "You're one to talk Ms. Nationals, you tried too hard and you got injured yourself, didn't you? Now you can't even play yet you're helping someone as selfish as Kageyama", he spat back at her, allowing the whistle to blow as he passed the ball to the other side.
Erika was silent for a moment, he wasn't wrong. She had become injured because of her own stubbornness, she knew of the nights she cried from the pain she endured and that she felt she could never play on the court again, but she was still standing doing her best to heal her knee and stay on the court in a different way.
"Yeah, you are right but at least I'm not doing nothing about it", she shot back at him, not raising her voice but standing her ground as her golden hues stayed narrowed.
Kei scoffed at her reply but he didn't say anything in return, instead targeting the tangerine haired boy. "And you Hinata, enthusiasm won't make you any taller, if you think trying hard is all it takes to succeed you're sorely mistaken", his voice was bitter, knowing well of that reality as he threw the ball in the air and tossing it to the other side.
"And just because you haven't given up yet Ms. Nationals, doesn't mean you will always get back on the court", Kei turned his head to Erika again for a short moment as the fallen champion kept a strong neutral expression.
"Tsukishima that's enough", Daichi spoke up, his voice now stern to the sardonic and sarcastic first year.
Erika was taken aback, she didn't need the defendingย as she had grown a backbone of her own years ago but she appreciated it when someone stuck up for her. A small smile graced her features as she continued watching the others play on the court, now watching how the ball was going to Kageyama's direction and both Tanaka and Hinata were calling the setter to throw it to them.
Kageyama was conflicted, he didn't know who the best option was in the moment but as he chose with his mind Tanaka, the ginger haired male called out the setters name and suddenly his instincts took over. Looking behind him where he was once abandoned, now he had someone behind him to spike his sets once again.
"I'm here!", Shoto shouted out, assuring the setter that he had his back just as he promised, taking advantage of and appreciating the set that would come his way.
Kageyama set the ball to Hinata, but in the moment the ball reaching him too soon and the spike was rather weaker than the ginger haired male wanted it to be, this caused the ball to be out of bounds while Daichi dove to the floor, attempting to save it (even if it didn't need to be).
"That was close, I almost jumped at nothing. But it's out", Shoyo was at first relieved but his mistake caught up to him in realization.
"What the hell was that for?", Kageyama shouted at Hinata.
"The ball came right towards me!", Shoyo shouted in return, mirroring the same tone and attitude that the setter shown towards him, stunning him into silence. "I don't care about what happened in middle school! I'm grateful for any set that comes my way. I just want the ball"
"I'll jump anywhere, I'll hit any ball. Believe me!", Shoyo gripped the area where his heart was on his chest, his fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt. "Give me a set and I'll hit it"
Erika listened to him closely along with everyone else in the gymnasium, he really didn't have a proper team in middle school so it was understandable how he would appreciate even the smallest things in the court bigger teams would take for granted. It really put a different perspective for the fallen champion and understanding her friend a little better.
"You guys can do quick attacks and you didn't tell me?", Tanaka's voice boomed, breaking the silence as he asked the two first years with his eyes wide in disbelief.
"What's that?", Shoyo asked him, his face still and straight unfazed by Tanaka's yelling of his question.
"That crazy fast attack you just did!", Tanaka answered him, the loudness still booming through the walls of their gymnasium.
Shoyo shook his head, "Uh no", he answered, "the only sets I've ever hit were way up high in the air", he gestured his hand with a spike to make a point to Tanaka.
"You literally just did it", Tanaka explained to Hinata, mentioning a time in middle school when their setter (who sounded a little inexperienced) messed up the set but Shoyo still managed to hit it, but the ginger haired male could barely recall how he did it properly even.
"Whatever! I'll still hit any set that comes at me. You wait and see!", Shoyo declared, still determined and willing to hit the sets Kageyama would serve to him no matter what.
Kageyama however answered with a quick turning away of his head, "You've never done combos before so that's impossible for you". This answer only stunned Shoyo into silence, even the blonde girl was taken back. 'Geez, this guy' She sighed to herself inwardly from his attitude.
"Don't be ridiculous! You don't get to act like a wimp! Just stop it!", the ginger haired temporary spiker called the "King" out on his behavior, shouting loudly as he pointed an assertive finger at him; yet all there was in response was silence as the setter walked away, leaving the shorter male to scoff in silence to him.
However witnessing this, the blond caustic boy had his smug smirk returning to his face as he looked at the setter who was silent in his argumentative defeat. "Not very regal of you, sire!", he mocked, calling out to him.
A vein burst on Shoyo's head. "You're gonna pay for that I promise you!", he shouted back at his opponent who was much taller than him and possessed a less than pleasant attitude.
"Look at that. Getting all bent out of shape again?", Kei smirked, mocking the boy as he looked down on him again. "You can't just bulldoze your way through everything, you know that right? Not everyone is a good fit for every job, you know. I mean you're clearly not cut out to be a spiker", those harsh words would be true to anyone who was in Hinata's position, if they didn't have his athletic prowess and his jumping abilities.
Those words coming from him almost made Tanaka blow a fuse, his hands in a fist as he attempted to go at the blonde boy but he was stopped as the captain grabbed his wrist. Erika even gritted her teeth, knowing well arguing with the boy with a bitter attitude would be useless but she would still stand her ground for herself and her friends if needed.
"You're right, in middle school, even now. No matter how much I jump I always get blocked", Shoyo spoke first, knowing well that he was telling the truth but he still wanted to speak from his heart and mind too. "Height is important for volleyball, you can't always jump real high to make up for being short like me. But still, that never stopped me from wanting to be a spiker. I don't care whether I'm cut out for it or not, I'll do the best of what I can with what I've got and I'll win. I'm on this court and I'm not going anywhere"
Those words of declaration reached to Tobio Kageyama, who oddly knew the feeling too well as he understood the passion and love for the game. They were different no doubt about it, but their love and passion for the game was strong.
Kei sighed bitterly in return, absolutely loathing the positive energy and the enthusiasm from Shoyo Hinata despite the odds being in front of him. "Have you even listened to a word I said?", he remarked, "It doesn't really work that way, shorty. You can substitute spirit for height, unless you want to be a libero, that is", the blond boy bit back.
Tobio took only a moment in silence, but he listened carefully to Shoyo Hinata and Kei Tsukishima's exchange. "I open up a wall and block the spiker", his declaration came out, following in suit of his past rival now current teammates determination as he stood next to him. "That's the setter's job", with his enunciation, the other players of the court were taken aback by the boldness of his statement, yet Tsukishima continued staring down at him with a hardened glare.
Silence was present for a moment but the setter dragged Shoyo away, grabbing onto his shoulder before the titian haired first year could properly react.
"Hey man! Could you chill?", Tanaka followed in Kageyama's suit, not knowing his true plan but he didn't want him to truly kill his teammate.
Erika was too far to hear their conversation fully but she was curious, they were crafting a plan and Tanaka could only understand more than half of it before he scolded Kageyama for his earlier attitude.
The next game started shortly again, the three of each team's ready to start playing so they could win or crush their opponents. Tobio Kageyama and Shoyo Hinata's teamwork wasn't perfect, but it was an improvement compared to before as they were at least trying to work together. Shoyo even showed improvement by catching the ball with his receive and made his way to the net to get Kageyama's set, yet failed in doing so as the set was faster than he would anticipate.
"How'd you miss that? You have too-", realizing his attitude was coming back, the setter stopped himself mid-sentence, his face contorting into a sour expression.
"Nice ball, your highness", Tsukishima taunted Kageyama rather loudly from the other side of the net.
This irked the setter, "Nothing ever works out on the first try!", Tobio bit back.
"Hey, that's what losers say", the blond boy remarked back.
Several tries later, no success in spiking the unrealistic sets by Kageyama, Hinata struggled a few tries until one try had him touching the ball but getting tangled in the net. "I touched it that time!", he grinned, shouting victoriously but it was short-lived as he got himself tangled in the net, struggling to get out.
"You look like a fish!", Tanaka called out to him.
Erika could understand Shoyo's exhaustion and frustration, the guy looked worn out from trying to catch up to the setter's high standards that even his past teammates struggled to get too. The titian haired boy released a sigh of defeat, "I can't guess your timing at all", the shorter boy moaned in defeat.
"You have lightening fast reflexes! You just need to give it more "POW!" or "OOMPH!", the setter yelled at him.
"Is it "OOMPH!" or "POW!" make up your mind!", Shoyo argued back at him.
"Don't get caught up in the terminology!", Tanaka joined in on the argument, getting irritated with their constant bickering.
Slowly behind them as they didn't notice, Koshi Sugawara bent down to grab the ball that fell to the ground and held it in his hand. "Kageyama", he called out his name, making the setter and the other two players on his team turn their heads to him, letting the soft spoken third year give his analogy and observations.
"You need to make sure you don't let history repeat itself", the quote from Sugawara caught the younger setter's attention, as he faced his upperclassman.
Erika stood up from her chair slowly, wanting to help out as she stepped closer to where Sugawara was standing.
"Uhh, what I mean is", Sugawara stopped himself before he was about to speak further on.
Tobio however pointed towards his teammate with a straightened frown, "He's got super fast reflexes and, he can jump. He can learn how to quick attack", the setter politely replied to his senpai.
"Wait, can I say something first?", Erika asked politely, the blonde girl stepped forward as she kept her golden gaze on the setter boy who was taller than her.
"Yes, sure", Koshi answered, allowing the girl to speak first as he wanted to hear what she would say to the setter.
"Look Kageyama", Erika started off, taking a deep breath in and out before she continued speaking. "Shoyo is new to this, he has the amazing agility, reflexes and athleticism but he's still green. He doesn't have the raw talent you have and all, but with you and your talent, you're not considering your allies strength but you're throwing expectations at them mindlessly with your sets", the blonde started to speak out, from her observations and her experiences on the court.
Sugawara was taken aback by the words Erika had spoken to Kageyama and he couldn't help but agree. "Koume is right. Like she said, Hinata doesn't really know what he's doing out there"
Shoto internally winced at the words the silver haired male spoke softly but truthfully. "That's kind of harsh", the tangerine male spoke to himself in defeat.
"He doesn't have technique or experience like a lot of the people you competed against in middle school", as the words came from Sugawara, the spirit of Hinata started to soar out of his body from the humiliating reality from its truth. "But here's a rare asset", with those words, Shoyo perked up.
"Really? Ah come on, I'm not like a genius or anything", the boy felt himself become happy as he rubbed the back of his head nervously from the compliment.
"Who said that?", Tanaka shot back at the shorter first year.
"If I had your skill, I mean think about it, maybe you should try adapting to more of Hinata's characteristics instead of the other way around. Don't you see what I'm saying? Just like Koume said, you should", the silver haired third year stopped, trying to find the right words to say to Kageyama.
"Tobio, it's up to you to use Shoyo's talents more effectively", Erika spoke the words that Sugawara wanted to say. "Kageyama, your talent, observations of your opponents and skills over the ball is very impressive but you're not putting in the same efforts for your teammates and if you continue that, it's going to be detrimental once again"
Koshi Sugawara couldn't help but stay silent in heavy, knowing well Kageyama possessed qualities that he didn't have a crumb of, what he would give to have that in his set of skills as a setter. Yet, he listened to the blonde girl just like Tanaka and Daichi as she spoke to Kageyama and even the younger setter himself was silent as he listened to her, the blonde girl took the ball from Sugawara's hands as he exchanged it to her and she passed the ball to Kageyama.
The setter could only stay silent, knowing well both Sugawara and Erika were right as he listened to them speak. His hands gripped the ball right in his hold before he turned his head to the shorter player he is meant to trust with his sets. Both Shoto and Tanaka were confused with this sudden behavior and expression, before he broke the silence. "Listen!", Tobio commanded, the tangerine male answered shortly as he had his attention on the setter now.
"I'm jealous of your crazy reflexes, alright?", the sudden confession from the talented setter came as a surprise for everyone, especially the inexperienced shorter male. "That's right, that's why you piss me off. It's such a waste", the honest that came from Kageyama even surprised Erika, the blonde was silent about to tell him off again but her words were cut off as he continued talking to the titian haired first year.
"That being said. All I can do now is use your talent to the fullest", his index finger pointed towards Shoyo, in his announcement from fiery determination that burned in his soul.
"What the?", Tanaka croaked out weakly, while the first year who stood in front of him was still stunned into silence.
"You are gonna run at full speed, and you're gonna jump as high as you can. I'll deliver the ball to you", as Tobio exchanged those words to Shoyo, Erika slowly walked back to her chair and sat back into it, keeping her seat close to where Kiyoko was standing.
"What do you mean by, deliver the ball?", Shoyo tilted his head, confused on what the setter was talking about.
"All you have to do is jump at max height and max speed wherever there is an opening and swing at full power", Erika listened carefully at the instructions that Tobio was giving to his teammate, making sure to rest her chin in her hand, letting the elbow rest on her good knee. 'What is he planning?'
"Forget adjusting to the ball. You don't even need to see the ball", with those last words, Erika's eyes shot up slightly as she lifted her head.
"What the? Not see the ball?", the blonde first year girl asked herself, shooting her head up as she was looking at the setter.
"Huh? How can I hit it if I don't even see it?", Shoyo asked him, also confused on what the ebony haired setter was talking about.
"I don't know", he answered rather too honestly and loudly.
"What?", Shoyo shouted back.
"Just try, okay?", with his request, the shorter player stayed silent but listened and considered his request, what to do in the matter.
Shoyo gave a nod and a short "Alright" in response. On the other side, Kei Tsukishima and Tadashi Yamaguchi were gossiping, mocking the "King of the Court" together while attempting to figure their plan sooner or later to foil it.
Erika waited in anticipation, the game started again as she kept her eyes on the court. Waiting for their move to be made so she could see if Tobio's sets would improve with Shoyo's spikes or not. He was silent, focused. The ball was spiked into the court by Daichi, being passed around in receives while the setter observed his surroundings to make the perfect set for Shoyo, adjusting his feisty spirited and passionate teammates spikes.
He was there, he moved to where the ball was trusting in his instincts Shoyo would be there to make the spike. Now in front of him, taking the opportunity to make the set and within that moment, Shoyo Hinata made the spike with a great speed, no one on the other side could make a reaction in time.
Erika was even stunned at the speed, taken aback by Shoyo Hinata's speed of his spike and how Kageyama had made the set to adjust to him. Not only that, Shoyo Hinata also did it with his eyes closed, like he was relying purely on instinct and trust.
"Yes!", Tobio shouted victoriously, a proud grin prominent on his features as he fisted his hands pushing them backwards.
Shoyo landed on the ground after his jump, a bright grin emanating from his features. "Whoa! I touched the ball!", the tangerine male cheered, feeling happy how he did his task and succeeded within the first try, laughter and glee bright as the summers day echoing through the gymnasium.
"It wasn't that great", Tsukishima replied with a bland response.
"Guys", Daichi stepped forward, his face wearing a flabbergasted expression as he stepped forward to the net to talk to his teammates. "He just did that, with his eyes closed", the revelation caused his teammates jaws to drop as Erika stood up with the speed she could muster on her good knee.
"I saw that too", she called out, "Shoyo! How did you do that with your eyes closed?", she asked the ginger haired male who was a bit shorter than her.
"Your eyes were closed but, Kageyama made a pinpoint accuracy to your hand. How did you do it?", she asked him, seeing how he was silent as he looked at his red palm stinging softly.
Yet Kei Tsukishima was stunned into silence, not knowing how something like that was possible.
"Erika! You guys! I don't know what happened but I just hit it! Kageyama was the one who told me not to look at the ball", Shoyo answered enthusiastically, his eyes and smile shining brightly that could put a summers day to shame.
"Hey! What did you do? Your eyes weren't really shut were they?", Tobio turned his attention to Shoyo, his hand pointing at him accusatorially as he shouted the question.
"Just like I told Erika, you were the one who told me not to look at the ball! If I kept my eyes open I knew I would look at it", the tangerine player answered honestly.
Erika was quite stunned, Shoyo had taken Kageyama's request quite literally but it worked out in his favor, this even shocked the genius setter himself.
"But I wasn't telling you too", Tobio responded, still not recovered from the shock.
"But it worked, right? What's the big deal?", Shoyo asked, still confused on what he was talking about.
"I know it worked, but what kind of person acts totally on trust?", the setter asked.
"I can't help it, trust is the only way I know how to do it", with Shoyo's response, Tobio was stunned into silence once more. However, Tanaka walked towards Shoyo and ruffled his hair, praising the shorter and smaller sized first year player.
Erika sat back down in her chair, laughing to herself softly as she kept herself silent. This team was truly something else, as were Tobio Kageyama and Shoyo Hinata when they managed to work together. This was getting truly interesting, she actually even wanted her mom to watch them play at one point if it was possible.
The next game started, the ball was served into the court but unfortunately Kageyama's spike didn't go as planned hitting Shoyo in the face as the tangerine haired male fell to the floor from the error. "Oops", Tobio remarked.
"You okay there, Shoyo?", Erika asked, ready to get up and assist if needed but Kiyoko was already there to make sure if he was okay, the first year boy stunned by the third year woman's beauty had responded politely and bowed to her.
An unintentional smile made its way to Kageyama's face as he was deep in thought but Hinata shot back at him quickly. "What are you smiling about?", Shoyo snapped, "this is the second time I've been smacked in the face!"
While other players were understandably doubting this new technique Hinata had done, being either a fluke or a one time thing, Erika knew well that even the greatest players created their moves on accident or their combination attacks with their most trusted teammates on a whim. It was real, she would love to see it again if possible, maybe she would help Shoyo in polishing it up.
With a short bicker, Shoyo and Hinata went back to their positions alongside Tanaka and Daichi had a soft smile on his face as he was speaking with Tsukishima who still held his permanent scowl plastered to his face.
The game started again, Tanaka saving the ball with a receive and sending to the setter. Kei and Tadashi were prepared to protect their court against Tanaka but were sorely mistaken when they both saw Shoyo running to the net with his speed, suddenly taken by surprise in how the shorter male ran at a greater speed than the blockers could even register. Remembering what the setter instructed from him, taking this chance to make the set and send it to Shoyo, who firmly planted his feet on the ground and jumped as high as he possibly could. His hand spiking the ball with all the might he could possibly muster, the wall of blockers that once haunted him that now been broken with his victory, he could see the other side more clearly.
His victory was certain as Daichi attempted to save the ball by diving to the ground but even his attempt was futile as the ball had already reached the ground and the third year player had dove to the ground, being too late to save it.
As everyone was silent in witnessing this moment, Erika couldn't help the smile on her face as she watched them. She saw how Shoyo's eyes were closed again as he spiked the ball, but this attempt succeeded. This time, they were getting closer to victory.
"Yes!", both boys couldn't help but shout in victory and pride within their synchronization. Erika couldn't help but feel the chuckle fall from her lips at watching this. This team truly did have a chance at victory, they just needed the right teaching, the right coach and more but for now; they needed this game to go well.

More games passed as well as time, Erika watched closely in the games how Tobio and Shoyo practiced their quick attack with the tangerine boy's intentional blindness to the ball to have trust in his setters abilities as the setter would have the same trust for him. This improvement over the past few days was something better than what she had hoped for honestly.
She could hear Sugawara and the other second years on the sidelines, Kinoshita and Ennoshita speaking amongst each other but she didn't pay too much attention to the conversation as her eyes were too focused on the game.
Both Shoyo Hinata and Ryonosuke Tanaka were growing more jovial as they cheered and high fived, shouting victoriously and loudly.
Echoes of whistles, the ball slamming against the floor and on the hands of players rounded in the gymnasium. "You're not getting past me this time, kid!", Tsukishima barked, jumping up to block Hinata's spike yet his wait was all for nothing.
"Oh really?", Tanaka shouted back, it was too late for their team as Kageyama set the ball to him and in return, the second year spiked the ball to their court and scored his team another round. It was a good plan, having Shoyo as the main attack but also having Tanaka as a powerful weapon too for their offense.
"Dammit", Kei Tsukishima muttered under his breath in frustration.
"Oh! You like that? Huh, Tsukishima not talking so big anymore, huh?", the loud and rowdy second year yelled a little confidently, taking his shirt off from the excitement.
"Yeah! What he said!", Shoyo joined in on the back talk.
"Ooooh! I wish you try something boy!", the second year continued his attitude.
"Yeah! Go ahead and try!", Shoyo followed in again.
Erika couldn't help but keep a huge laughter back at Tanaka's ridiculous behavior and Shoyo joining in on it. It was funny to watch honestly.
"Why are you doing more trash talking than Hinata is?", Sugawara shot back to Tanaka.
"Exactly! Without the first years you never would have made that hit!", Ennoshita joined in, his annoyance showing in his face.
"Yeah, don't get all cocky", Sugawara reminded him, his face straightening in annoyance.
"Keep your clothes on!", Kinoshita called out, his expression showing only annoyance in the other second year's obnoxious loudness and overconfidence.
"Look! I don't need anymore smart remarks from the peanut gallery!", Tanaka shot back.
The players decided to take a break, wiping themselves on their towels from the excess sweat that dripped from their skin or drinking their water in large quantities to regain their energy for a short while before the game started again.
Back and forth went the ball in the court. Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama continuously practiced their quick attack combo while Tanaka scored in some points. It took work but the two formerly rivalling first years made it work, their teamwork improved greatly.
. The intensity of the match grew as the second set came in, their attacks growing more powerful and Kageyama also sharpened his wits too. Even Tsukishima took a moment, throwing off his cream colored sweatshirt to the side of the court while he straightened his glasses, running back to the court as he and Tadashi continuously attempted to block the balls. The two first years paired with Tanaka garnered more points than before.
Erika smiled, "Now this is what I'm talking about", she spoke softly to herself. Kiyoko looked down at her, a smile curling her lips as she took the whistle out of her mouth.
"Yeah, these guys are doing a really good job", she agreed, nodding her head as she looked down at the first year girl she befriended and grew closer too.
A victorious "Yasss!" shouted from Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama, echoing throughout the gym, not only were they truly perfecting their new technique but they along with everyone else in the gymnasium (even if Tsukishima would deny it) were having fun. The joy itself even spread to the players currently on the sidelines and to the girls were chatting and laughing together as they watched the match.
It was soon settled, Tobio and Shoyo had won the Saturday Match at 25 points while Kei Tsukishima and Tadashi Yamaguchi had fallen shorly behind at 21 points. It was now over.
