Thin Mints - Toko Fukawa
A/N: This wasn't requested, I just wanted to write a oneshot for Toko since I couldn't sleep.
-------------------------------
"Thanks again! You really made my sister happy!"
"Y-Yeah..."
-------------------------------
I grit my teeth in frustration and scribbled the pen across the white etch of the paper, making ugly balls of inky anger.
No no no no no!
Crumpling up the useless rough draft, I tossed it to the floor, slumping at my desk and sighing.
Stupid stupid stupid...! It's so useless...! You're so useless...!
I groaned and leaned back in my chair, running a hand through the tangled, oily mess I called hair. When was the last time I showered...?
Groaning and deciding not to dwell too much on the thought, I laid back and stared at the ceiling, the suffering feeling of writer's block numbing my senses.
Maybe...if I actually had a love life....inspiration would be easier...
My glasses fogged up with each heavy breath I took.
That's right...
I don't have one...
Inhaling a sharp breath, I rubbed the bridge of my nose and took off my glasses, cleaning the fogged up lenses with the end of my skirt. I'm so tired...
"Tired of what?"
God...it's Syo again...
"Bet your tits it's me!"
Shut up. I'm tired.
"When ya' gonna stop weeping all the time 'bout bein' single? Go out and find someone ya' know?"
No one wants to date someone like me.
"Then make them want ye'! I'm tired of all your wallowing bullshit."
Want...me...?
The sound of the doorbell ringing snapped me out of my thoughts. Syo went quiet as I continued to lay there, not sure if I heard that right.
Someone...rung the bell...my bell...
It can't be...
I'm...I'm hallucinating...--
The bell rung again, this time more frequently.
H-Holy shit--!
I got up from my seat and walked over, surprised and annoyed at the constant string of bells.
It can't be a visitor... no one likes me...
Ugh...it's probably some idiotic kid who thinks it's funny to ding dong ditch.
The bells continue as I got closer, about to grasp the door handle.
Watch. It's going to be no one. Just a stupid prankster who thinks it's funny to disrupt people and--
"Ugh, what?!"
I swung the door open and expected to see no one there, but instead, I locked eyes with the most prettiest girl I had ever seen. She had smooth S/T skin and silky H/C hair that made me envious of her overwhelming beauty.
She stood there, eyes wide with shock as she held a hand in front of her chest, not expecting my sudden outburst.
"Ah... S/N (Sister name) I told you not to ring the bell so much..." she looked down at the pavement.
I looked down as well, following her gaze to see a smaller looking version of herself standing there with a wagon of boxed cookies.
She wore a standard girl scout's uniform, her hair tied in two small braids similar to mine.
Huh...? She looks kinda cute--
"Buy my cookies."
Never mind.
The older looking girl started panicking, looking flustered and kneeling down to the girl's level, trying to scold her.
"S/N! That's not the girl scout code! You have to be polite to sellers! Persuade them to buy your cookies, not order them!"
The older girl got up and sheepishly smiled, laughing awkwardly.
"Ahah...! I'm so sorry miss. My little sister is a new girl scout and she tends to be aggressive in the marketing area..."
"Buy my cookies," the younger one repeated.
"S/N!" she scolded again.
Her face turned apologetic as she bowed in respect, muttering "sorry" and "I promise we won't bother you again."
She grabbed her sister's tiny hand and was about to drag her off when--
"Y/N! We're supposed to sell my cookies! No one's bought them yet and we have to make one sale!"
"S/N, we need to go. I'm sorry once again for bothering you, miss," the girl named "Y/N" said, looking up at me with those beautiful E/C eyes.
I felt my heart ram faster the more I stared at her.
"Fuck she's hot. Go after 'er."
Not now Syo...!
"Have a nice rest of your day, miss."
"Y/N" grinned and helped her sister drag her wagon, the two of them starting to walk further away from me.
"Do something before I do something."
No way Syo--!
"W-Wait!"
The girl and her sister stopped, turning back to me with surprised faces.
"H-Huh? Do you need something ma'am?" the girl asked, still holding her sister's hand.
"I'll..." I scoffed and looked off to the side, feeling my cheeks grow warm.
This was stupid. I was stupid.
"I'll buy a box."
I was stupid...
For a girl I just met.
The little girl's eyes lit up as she ran up to me with a small clipboard. "What kinda cookies do you want ma'am?"
"E-Er..."
Her older sister giggled and walked towards us, making my body mellow with warmth and anxiousness. Her little sister tugged on the end of my long skirt and held up her small clipboard.
"We have all kinds of cookies. Tagalongs, samoas, smores, thin mints..."
"Erm... th-the last one I guess...?" I didn't eat sweets as often, so it didn't matter which one I bought. I just wanted her to stay a bit longer.
"Thin mints? Good choice! They're one of Y/N's personal favorites!" They are...?
Her older sister simply giggled and smiled at her, "Now, S/N, tell her the price per box and count the money like I taught you."
"Okaaay! It's only five dollars ma'am!"
Five dollars per box?
Geez...
I really am fooling myself for this. I'm so stupid.
"Ah...right...give me a sec..."
I walked back into my house to grab my wallet. I can't believe I'm wasting five dollars for a girl...
Walking back, the little sister looked so happy, excited to have made her first sale.
"I did it Y/N! I did it!"
"Good job, S/N!"
The two of them hi-fived each other with both hands, giggling in an oddly adorable manner.
I must admit, seeing them have such a good bond with each other made me feel warm. It was always lonely for me, with the life of a famous writer and everything. But seeing these two complete strangers being happy made me feel...almost included in a way...
"Oh, you're back!" the little sister grinned, standing straight and reaching her hand out to collect the money.
"Both hands," her older sister warned.
The younger one sighed and reached out both hands, accepting the money in a more polite way.
"Thank youuu...!" she grinned, seeming happy with her sale.
Her older sister nodded in approval, walking towards her sister and giving her a box of thin mints from the wagon.
She hurriedly took it and shoved it towards me, making me wince and hesitantly take it.
"Come on Y/N! Let's hit up more houses!"
"Ah-- S/N! Don't phrase it like that!"
The little girl rushed off and grabbed the handle of her wagon, dashing down the pavement with a skip in her step.
"S/N, wait!"
The older sister was about to leave, when she stopped, looking at me with a smiling face.
Holy shit...I'm melting...
"Thanks again! You really made my sister happy!"
Her smile...it was the warmest thing I had ever seen...
"Y-Yeah..."
I watched the girl I had crushed on run after her sister, shouting out scolding remarks like a mother in a busy mall.
I guess...that was it...
I'll never see her again...
It was all stupidly hopeless in the end. And I wasted five bucks too...
I groaned and felt misery bubble up in my chest, slamming the door shut and clutching my oily hair.
You're so stupid Toko...
How could someone as beautiful as her...
Love someone as ugly as you...?
Gritting my teeth in wallowing pity, I gripped the box of thin mints tighter, wanting to throw it away like some useless gift.
Whatever...I need to get back to work...
Walking over to the trash bin in my kitchen, I stopped when my fingers felt the crinkly material of cheap post-it paper on the back of the box.
What the...?
Flipping it over, there was a yellow post it note on the back, a small message written in quick, rushed writing.
Thank you for making my sister smile. You were her first customer and you made her really happy. Thank you. Someday, I hope we can get to know each other better.
Call me.
xxx-xxx-xxxx
~Y/N
What the huh--?
Did I read that right?
I must've read the note at least fifteen times but I couldn't believe my eyes.
Did she just...give me her number...?
"Hah! You finally got a girl to give you her number! Way to go Slow-Poko!"
Not now Syo...!
My heart slammed in my chest, my breathing growing shaky as a small smile made it's way to my face.
"I-I...I know what my next novel is going to be, Syo."
"Pfft, okay. Gonna be some lesbian romance and shit?"
. . .
"Fuckin' knew it."
Dammit Syo...
"Pyahahaha! Just messin' with ya' Toko."
Aside from the playful --yet annoying-- banter with Syo, I felt happy.
For once...it felt like...people actually liked me.
She liked me...!
A pretty girl like Y/N actually liked me!
It repeated in my head over and over again as I scribbled down a rough draft of my new novel. A romantic, heartfelt story about two girls falling in love for the first time. It was perfect.
"Pfft...I still can't believe you simped over a girl so hard you wasted five dollars on a box of fuckin' cookies."
No, Syo. You're wrong.
Those were the best five dollars I've ever spent.
