TWELVE

"I think I speak for everyone when I say..."
----------
"Ross, did you really read all of these baby books?" Joey asked while Ross put the pregnancy books into a bag.
"Yep. You could plunk me down in the middle of any woman's uterus, no compass, and I could find my way out like that." Ross snapped his fingers.
"Ooh, this is cool." Phoebe was reading through one of the books. "In some parts of the world, people actually eat the placenta."
"And we're done with the yogurt." Chandler put down the cup.
"Hey, Ross. Did you know that your baby is only this big? This is your baby." Joey showed with his fingers with a height of about two inches. "Hi, Daddy." Joey said in a high–pitched voice.
"Hello." Ross pretended to wave at his baby.
"How come you don't live with Mommy?" He asked as the baby. "How come Mommy lives with that other lady?" He chuckled a little. "What's a lesbian?" Joey stopped and nudged Ross' arm. Then, Rachel and Paolo walked in.
"You can say it, honey—Poconos." Rachel closed the door behind them. "Poconos. It's like poke a nose." She poked his nose.
"Poke. A. Nose." He poked her nose twice before pulling her in for a kiss. Ross, Chandler, Joey, and I mimicked Paolo tone. I headed over to Rachel and the girls.
"So, did I hear Poconos?" The three of us sat down at the table, and Rachel opened the fridge.
"My sister's giving us her place for the weekend." Rachel handed me one of the iced teas.
"Whoo–hoo. First weekend away together." Phoebe cheered.
"That's a big step." I rubbed her arm.
"I know!" The four of us squealed in excitement for Rachel. "We are way past the fling thing. I mean, I am feeling things that I've only ready about in Danielle Steele books, you know? When I'm with him, I'm just totally, totally..." She trailed off, but we knew what she meant. Monica made us each take home at least two lasagnas. Joey, Chandler, and I walked out.
"God, babies are the cutest things." I groaned, thinking about the baby books Ross brought over.
"I love babies with their little baby shoes and their little baby toes and their little baby hands." Joey gushed with me. Honestly, that made me blush for some reason.
"Okay, you two are going to have to stop that. Forever." Chandler pointed at the two of us.
"Well, I better head over to my apartment and get started on these." I motioned to the two lasagnas in my hand.
"Need help with that? Or anything?" Joey was quick to ask.
"Actually, I think I'm good, but thank you. Goodnight, guys." I kissed their cheeks before heading into my apartment. The next day, the entire gang except Phoebe was at Central Perk.
"I can't you don't want to know." Rachel came over to the us with a pot of coffee. "I couldn't not know. I mean, if the doctor knows, and Carol knows, and Susan knows..."
"And Monica knows." Monica added.
"How could you know? I don't know." Ross pointed to himself.
"Carol called me to thank me for the lasagna. I asked. She told me." Monica answered.
"What's it going to be?" Joey and I asked her.
"They're having a boy." She leaned over and whispered into our ears. My jaw dropped, and I looked over at Joey.
"Huh? Great. Now he and she know, and I don't know." Ross immediately stood up.
"I'm sorry. I'm just excited about being an aunt." Monica exclaimed excitedly.
"Or an uncle." Joey quickly added. It's the effort that counts.
"Hey, Pheebs." We greeted her as she walked into the coffee shop.
"Fine." She kind of said in an annoyed tone as she sat between Chandler on Rachel on the couch.
"Phoebe, what's the matter?" Monica asked her.
"Nothing. I'm sorry. I'm out of sorts." She shook her head.
"Could we get some cappuccino over here?" One of the customers spoke up. We all turned to Rachel, who didn't realize at first.
"Right. That's me." She quickly stood up and went over to them.
"Hey, Chandler, that table place closes at seven." Joey pointed to his watch before standing up. The two grabbed their coats and were heading out.
"What's the matter, Pheebs? Is something wrong?" I moved to sit next to her.
"Alright, you know Paolo?" She glanced at all of us.
"I'm familiar with his work. Yes." Ross replied in a monotonous tone.
"Well, he made a move on me." She looked down at her lap.
"Store will be open tomorrow." Joey and Chandler turned around and came back towards us.
"Go on." I nodded my head for her to continue.
"He came in for a massage. And everything was fine until...he ran a hand up my leg." She explained, making us all ooh. "He ran his hands up to my butt and squeezed it." She stuttered out. "But his hands weren't the problem anymore. Boy scouts could have camp under there." She shook her head. We oohed again.
"'Ooh' what?" Rachel quickly came over to us.
"Uma Thurman. The actress." I blurted out, the others agreed with me. Rachel nodded her head and chuckled before getting back to work.
"So what are you going to do?" We all leaned in towards her so we could hear each other while talking quietly so Rachel wouldn't hear.
"You have to tell her. It's your moral obligation as a friend. As a woman, I think it's a feminist issue." Ross answered her. "Guys? Guys?" He glanced over at Chandler and Joey.
"Oh, yeah, you have to tell her." Chandler nodded his head.
"Feminist issue. That's where I went." Joey agreed as well.
"She is going to hate me." Phoebe let out a sigh.
"But you're going to be telling her the truth. And sometimes, the truth hurts." I rubbed her back. The next evening, Chandler and Joey were showing me, Ross, and Monica their new table.
"I think it's the most beautiful table I've ever seen." Ross said while we just looked at it.
"Yeah, I know." Chandler pat the edge of it.
"So how is this going to work? Are you guys going to balance the plates on these little guys' heads?" Monica and I walked over to one side.
"Who cares? We'll eat at the sink." Joey chuckled as he, Chandler, and Ross went over to the other side of the foosball table. We started playing a round.
"Better watch out, Suparna." She said to me before making a shot. "Score!" She yelled. A little later, Phoebe came in. The two of us were watching while Monica and Ross were playing against Joey and Chandler.
"I think she took it pretty well. You know, Paolo's over there right now, so..." She trailed off.
"We should get over there and see if she's okay. Just one...second." Monica replied before making another shot. "Score!" She high–fived Ross and kissed his cheek, before the three of us headed to Monica's apartment.
Rachel and Paolo were outside while she tossed his clothes off the balcony. Paolo was trying to stop her, but only Italian words came out. The three of us sat on the couch, waiting until they come in so we can comfort her.
"How's it going?" We turned around to see Ross behind us.
"Don't stare. She just finished throwing his clothes off the balcony. Now there's just a lot of gesturing." Monica explained what we were seeing.
"That is either 'How could you?' or 'enormous breasts'." Phoebe tried to guess.
"Here he comes." I said to them. Ross pretended to be going through the mail, Phoebe took out a drink from the fridge, I was flipping through a magazine, and Monica was washing the dishes.
"Uh, I am, uh, to say goodbye." He walked inside with his empty suitcase.
"Bye–bye." Phoebe glanced over at him. I waved at him sarcastically with a fake smile, not even wanting to say a word to him.
"I really hate you for what you did to Rachel, Paolo, but I still have five of these." She handed him one of the lasagnas. "Heat it at 375 until the cheese bubbles."
"Grazie." He thanked us in Italian.
"Paolo, I–I just want to tell you—and I think I speak for everyone when I say..." Ross shut the door on his face.
"Oh, just look at her." Monica, Phoebe, and I were about to head outside to comfort her.
"Hey, guys, guys, I really think only one of us should go out there so that she's not overwhelmed." I smirked to myself, realizing what he was trying to do. And I think that's sweet.
"Ross is right. I think he should go." He mouthed 'thank you' to me as he headed outside. The three of us were going through a lasagna when she came inside.
"Honey, are you alright?" The four of us got into a group hug while Ross stood around.
"Medium." She let out a sigh. "Any cookies left?" Phoebe must have made Rachel a batch of her famously delicious cookies. Ross was trying to convince Rachel that not all guys are bad.
"I know that. And I'm sure your little boy is not going to grow up to be one." We looked at her.
"What?" Ross asked us.
"What?" Rachel repeated, hoping he hadn't heard her.
"I–I'm–I'm having a boy?" He pointed at the four of us.
"Uh...no." She replied. "No, no. In fact, you're not having a boy." She stood up.
"I'm having, I'm having a boy?" He asked us again. "Huh? Am I having a boy?" The four of us nodded our heads, and the five of us squealed in excitement.
"What is it? What is it?" Joey and Chandler ran into the apartment.
"I'm having a boy! I'm having a boy!" Ross jumped up and down in pure joy.
"Hey! We already knew that." The guys said at the same time.
"I'm having a son." Ross calmed down a bit and kind of just whispered it to himself repeatedly.
