Chapter 8
Rayne was trembling. It was a lot for her to handle. She didn't expect to see Sean ever again. Not after what had happened. She struggled to get her thoughts under control. She had tried to forget about all that happened with Sean, but it came rushing back the moment she looked into his eyes. She wanted nothing to do with him. After all, he was her biggest mistake.
She frantically tried to rub her hands on her dress, as if trying to erase the remains of his touch from her body. She could still feel her skin burn where his hands were, minutes ago.
Sebastian looked at her. He could sense her sadness. Her eyes glistened, indicating the tears that were about to form. His heart hurt at the sight. But, he tried to remain calm. For her.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were stalking me," he spoke, trying to ease her nerves. He adjusted his cap so that she could get a better look at his face, giving a soft smile.
Only then, Rayne acknowledged the man standing in front of her. She had almost forgot that he was sticking up for her. A small smile crept to her lips, as she remembered their last encounter.
"What do you mean?" She had an amused look on her face. They met again by chance, right?
"Well, you were surprised to see me, so I don't think you were stalking me," he shrugged, trying to act cool, but failing nonetheless. He took the chance to cover up the fact that he was the one following her around.
Rayne simply smiled at that. A smile that melted his heart. She still didn't have the energy to form coherent sentences, considering that she just met her life's biggest mistake, only moments ago.
"For the record, you didn't need me to do that. You would've punched him in a bit, I swear," Sebastian said in a reassuring tone.
"I don't actually think so," she denied with the smile still lingering on her lips.
'Of course, she thinks that.'
He looked at her with such determination in his eyes, that she would've believed him even if he had told her that the sky was green, "You would've..."
He almost told her name, pulling himself back at the last second. He wasn't supposed to know her name, at least, not yet. Not according to her.
She was flustered after the eye contact. It was like she was staring deep into his soul. She immediately looked at her feet, not wanting him to see her bright red cheeks.
Sebastian was still looking at her. Like she made his world shine bright. Like she was the Ray of sunshine he needed in his life. He immediately held out his hand, "Sebastian Stan."
"Rayne Harris."
'I know, drăguţă, I know.'
She still smiled at him, probably thanking him a thousand times internally, a little shy to say that out loud.
They stood there, watching each other, unable to move. Rayne, because of the shock she endured. Sebastian, because of Rayne.
Sebastian feared that she was about to walk away. He didn't want her to. He wanted her all to himself. He didn't want to lose her. Again.
So, he said the first thing that came to his mind, not bothering to think about how stupid it will sound, considering that they've only met a couple of times.
"Do you want to go somewhere ? I know just the place," Sebastian built up the courage to ask. He felt the chill spread to his spine once he realized what he had asked her. Mentally scolding himself for being such a creep, wishing for the ground to swallow him as whole.
He nervously bit his lip, as he awaited her answer.
As for Rayne, it was the second time talking to him, but she felt that she'd known him for years. She felt safe. Something she hadn't felt in a long time.
She smiled, forgetting about Sean, giving her undivided attention to the man in front of her.
"I'd love to, Sebastian," she heard herself say.
It felt like a dream to Sebastian. One that he never wanted to wake up from.
✵
Rayne looked around her and spotted the place that Sebastian apparently knew.
It was a Rage Room.
"Have you been here before?" He asked her, half nervous, half excited. He wasn't sure of she'd like it, but he hoped that she would.
She shook her head.
"I guess you're in for a treat then." He smiled at her.
The place was huge. It was sectioned in a peculiar manner. First couple of rooms looked like it can be accessed by anyone. They were filled with old televisions, printers and the like.
Then, it had an alleyway which led into the final rooms. It was dim lit than the rest of the place. Almost like a private area.
"Sebastian! How are you?" A guy came over to greet them.
Sebastian went closer and conversed with him for about a minute.
"Let's go, come on in," the guy directed them.
They were asked to wear helmets, goggles, gloves and boots. Rayne was curious. She had worn surgical gloves before, but these were new to her. Like the usual clumsy idiot she is, she struggled to put them on.
"May I?" Sebastian asked her, motioning towards her hand.
She looked at him indecisively, not wanting to reject his offer right away.
He knew that she was insecure about her hands, but he wanted her to feel comfortable around him.
"Let me," he softly whispered to her. Before she could refuse, Sebastian took one of her hands into his, slowly enveloping it with a grey leather glove, strapping it together in place. He did the same with her other hand.
Then, he wore his gloves as if he didn't notice anything from her hand. Rayne looked at him baffled. Not once had a person not commented about her hand before. This was the very first time for her. Sean always made her feel bad about it.
"Come with me?" She was brought out of her thoughts by Sebastian, who was reaching out for her. She took his hand and followed him.
The private rooms were opened and they were let in.
It was really neat compared to the rest of the place. Stacks of plates were nearly arranged on a table far away from the door. Near the plates, there were mugs and cups, also in neat stacks.
As soon as they entered, there saw a variety of objects. Rayne could only identify sledgehammers, golf clubs, baseball bats among the others.
"Which one do you want?" Sebastian asked her.
Rayne picked up a baseball bat.
"Did I beat you to it?" she asked gesturing to the baseball bat in her hand.
"Nah, I'm not much of a baseball player, anyway." He shrugged. He pretended to think hard, and took a golf club for himself.
"Does that mean you are good at golf, then?" she asked pointing towards the golf club in his hand.
"Oh, please don't let this fool you. I suck at sports," he admitted with a grin plastered on his face. She couldn't resist lightening up at the man before her.
He walked away from her and positioned himself in front of the stacks of plates, and took the first hit. The sound of the breaking plates reached her ear, slightly muffled due to the helmet around her head.
'What if she doesn't like this?' He turned back to look at her nervously.
She smiled at the sight in front of her, assuring him. And suddenly he knew that he'd made the right choice by bringing her here.
"Rayne, why don't you try once?" He asked her.
She nodded her head like a little girl. Then, moved forward to stand in front of him. She aimed for one of the cups with her baseball bat. It exactly hit the cup in its handle, and it broke into pieces.
"Excellent shot," he cheered. He'd always been her best supporter. Always will be.
They spent the next few minutes in comfortable silence. The only sound resonated was from the broken ceramic.
The dinnerware were split into tiny parts, but the two people found themselves building a strong bond. Each one of them helping the other to pick up their broken pieces without even realising.
There was no physical contact, but Sebastian felt it to be one of the most intimate nights of his life so far. He occasionally sighed at the fact that the goggles hid the best part of her face, but he could live with it. After all, he had her. With him.
It was oddly therapeutic for Rayne. She wanted to know why the kind stranger brought her here.
But above all, she wanted to know about him. She wanted to know about the kind stranger and the man on the sidewalk. She wanted to get to know Sebastian.
"Do you come here often?" She questioned him.
"I used to, a lot. But now I've found other ways to calm me down," He continued, "Did you like it?"
She nodded her head like a child again. He found it amusing. She was telling him so much, without even moving her lips. She didn't speak much that night, but Sebastian didn't need her to. He would understand her with the slight movement of her fingers, he didn't need words for that.
And at the moment, he saw the same twinkle in her eyes, the one that he saw years ago. The one that kept him awake at nights.
✵
They walked out of the Rage Room. Sebastian stopping for a minute to talk to his friend, Jake.
"About what happened back there, with Sean," Rayne gulped, "I should probably explain." They halted on their track to look at one another.
She was nervous. And he could feel it.
"Oh, no worries. You don't have to," he said and he meant it. He didn't want her to feel pressured. He wanted her to share her troubles with him, but only when she was ready. Not because she felt the need to.
"But you helped me," she looked into his eyes.
"Did you really need my help though? No, Rayne. I'm telling you, you could've broke that bastard's nose yourself," he said emphasizing the 'no'.
She smiled. A smile that lit up his world. He looked at her in awe, trying to figure out how a person could be this beautiful without even trying.
"Sorry for the whole 'this is the new guy I'm fucking' thing," she waved her hands pointing to the both of them.
"I understand. Really. You did what you had to do. He does seem like the type of guy that never wants you to move on," he stated.
She nodded her head in agreement, wondering how Sebastian knew about it after spending exactly 2 minutes with Sean. She also felt stupid, for she'd believed it to be love.
Rayne felt comfortable. He felt like one of those friends, where you've known the person for too long. Even if you don't meet other often, they fit right in when you do. Like it was meant to be.
Her phone buzzed a couple of times.
"You should get it," Sebastian motioned towards her purse.
He moved a little away from her, not wanting to eavesdrop.
Rayne accepted the call.
He marveled at the sight in front of him. She was effortlessly beautiful. You could see that her job was getting to her, she had slight dark circles under her eyes. But somehow she even pulled that off. He stared at her as she kicked and played with a stone, as if she was dancing with the night.
Even though he was a bit far from her, he could still hear her speak.
"Hey, Paige, I'm out. And I'll be home soon. Do you want anything?" happily greeted her friend. He wondered how easy it was for her to speak to the friend. He thought back to the days she was like that with him, when they effortlessly bickered non stop. He wanted to be like that again. He wanted to be her friend again.
"Well, I thought I was your only friend," Sebastian could hear her friend pouting. He tried to hide his chuckle at that comment.
'Seems like I've just gained another one,' Rayne thought. And she couldn't stop smiling at that.
