One Shots 7 (Minnesota) - Remember? P1
PART ONE
Sota sat in silence, holding her helmet tightly in her hands. Her blonde hair was messy and sweat was still dripping down her face. She looked like she'd just ran a marathon in a heavy suit of arnor. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, and she stared emotionlessly at the wall of the jet hangar.
She leaned her head up against the wall behind her, trying to wrap her head around everything that had just happened. She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. No... it couldn't be true. It just couldn't.
The silence was broken as the hangar door rose up, and light filtered in quickly, making Sota squint. There was a figure standing outside and it took a few moments for her to adjust to the sunlight and recognize Delaware.
"Joy?"
Del also showed evidence of tears. Sota watched as she came in and sat next to her. The two were in silence for several minutes that dragged on, for neither one could find something to say. Del finally looked down and took a deep breath.
"A-are you okay?"
"Are you?"
Del closed her eyes as she felt more tears coming and she sniffed, bringing her knees up to hug them.
"Not really."
"Neither am I."
Sota stood up, grabbed her helmet and walked toward the entrance. Del frowned. "Joy, where are you going?" She got no response. She quickly stood up. "Joy! Stop!" She called after her. Sota stopped in her tracks and struggled to contain the tears threatening to fall.
Del clenched her hands into fists. "Would you stop being so stubborn for once and just let me help you? I'm the only one who's in the same boat as you are." She told her firmly.
"You may have loved Evan, but he was my brother!" Tears escaped. "I lost my brother!" She choked back sobs and wiped her face. Sota stood with her back turned to her, not even bothering to stop the tears.
"And you lost the greatest boyfriend ever... obviously because he was my brother. So I think the last thing we both need is solitude. We need to help one another." Del finished her speech and waited to see what Sota would do.
Sota stood there for a few more moments before dropping her helmet and turning to run into Del's arms. "Ophelia! I miss him! I- I could've done something! I shouldn't have left! I- I.... I should've saved him when he needed me!" She sobbed.
"I know what you mean, Joy... I was right there. I got him to safety, but it breaks me to know I couldn't have saved him. I just needed more time." Del cried with her.
The two girls were locked in an embrace for a while. Later on, they sat down again and started talking about their memories with Evan. They laughed and cried some more until someone else came into the hangar.
"Joy? Ophelia? Are you two alright?" It was Six. Quickly wiping away tears and fixing their hair, Sota and Del shrugged in response.
Six walked in slowly. "Don't you two think we should go back and get Leo, Sage, and Oliver? They still aren't free from Project Freelancer." She pointed out. Sota and Del looked at each other soberly.
"Well... all we can do for now is-"
"Shhhhh!"
Del frowned at Six. "What is-" "SHHHH quiet! I think someone's coming!" She quickly tried to find a place to hide, beckoning Sota and Del to follow her. The three girls found a small compartment on the jet and crawled in. As the door shut, they heard familiar voices.
"Watch your six, Leo, we don't know-"
"Yeah yeah yeah, just let me handle this, Georgia." Missouri scowled and checked inside the hangar. "The hangar door is open. I think Del, Six, and Sota are here."
"Copy. Status Wash?"
Sota swallowed. "They're hunting us?"
Wash's voice broke through Missouri's comms. "I don't like this guys, they're our friends."
"They're our ex-teammates, Wash!" Missouri barked. "Guys, we're just finding them. The Director said nothing about bringing them back. Who knows, maybe they might give us information about how to escape ourselves." Georgia mentioned happily.
"Nah, the Director specifically asked me to capture them. I'm top dog now. Sota is just a traitor in the Director's eyes." Missouri told them.
"Leo! How could you say that? The Director is bad! He had Virginia kill her own nephew! And her husband! This isn't right, and you know it." Georgia scolded him.
"You're only saying that because I'm number one! You're jealous!" Missouri snapped and turned off his comms.
"Now!"
The three girls burst out of the compartment and immediately started attacking Missouri. Caught off guard, Missouri barely had time to react to three opponents and was taken down easily. "Don't be so proud of being number one by default." Sota hissed.
"Waitwaitwaitwait!" Missouri begged, putting his hands up. "It was all a ruse! The Director can hear over our comms and I was just trying to throw him off! But I guess Oliver and Sage didn't know that. The Director might be sending backup to capture all five of you soon!" He quickly explained.
Sota, Del, and Six looked at each other in shock. "Come on, guys, we have to get to Ollie and Sage!" Del announced, helping Missouri up and then racing off. Six and Sota followed close behind them.
By the time they found Georgia and Wash, though, Project Freelancer soldiers were already there. "We're gonna have to fight our way out!" Missouri exclaimed, raising his gun.
Georgia, Del, Sota, Wash, and Six held up their weapons as well and watched the approaching soldiers. "Three... two... one... FIRE!" Del counted down, then guns started blazing and soon the Freelancers had to duck behind whatever cover they could find.
After a while of open fire, the soldiers stopped shooting and the kids peeked out from their barriers to see what was going on. And standing before them were Agents Virginia, New Hampshire, Nevada, and... Maryland??
Sota's jaw dropped. "Nononono, Mary!" She ducked behind her cover, her eyes wide. She'd have to fight Jessica! The only person in the world who actually cared for her growing up! She was like a mother to her!
Del turned to Sota. "Joy, I'm sorry, but she's obviously with the Director! We can't let her get in our way!" Sota reluctantly nodded.
"Agents Delaware, Georgia, Washington, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, please return to Project Freelancer, you don't know what you're doing." Gin told them over a loud megaphone.
Wash tightened her grip on her gun and gritted her teeth. Del narrowed her eyes and Georgia and Missouri cocked their guns. "We're not giving up." Sota growled.
"This is your first and final warning. Come out with your hands up and leave your weapons!" Gin ordered, but nobody came. "Missouri?" She frowned. Him too.
"Very well. We'll do this the hard way."
The Freelancer kids heard Gin, Mary, Hampshire, and Nev running towards them. Shots were fired at the kids and they returned them, but they couldn't get clear shots of their attackers.
Soon they got too close and they had to abandon their guns and go into close combat. Georgia and Missouri were locked in a fight with Virginia, obviously having family issues... Wash was fighting Nevada and Six fought New Hampshire.
Sota stood face to face with her mother figure. The one who'd raised her. She narrowed her eyes. "Joy, this isn't how it's supposed to be."
"And how is it supposed to be? Us used as pawns for the Director? As his puppets?" Sota snapped and Mary took a deep breath. "Joy... The Director isn't perfect, but you had a good life... please don't leave. Your parents dedicated their lives to this program, as have I!"
"Speaking of my parents, I don't even know who they are!" Sota growled and went in for a round kick then a back kick. She threw a few punches which Mary blocked and dodged. "I can't tell you! It's too painful, Joy!" "I don't care!"
They were a flurry of hands and feet, with neither one gain get the upper hand. "Joy think about what your doing!" "No! You think about what you're doing! You're serving someone who is responsible for killing so many people! A lot of them either were or are agents as well! He's used us for his own gain and he continually lies and tricks us! I'm sick of it! Wake up, Jessica!" She shouted, fighting more fiercely.
Mary and Sota continued to fight until Sota barely managed to take her down. "I taught you too well, Butterfly." Mary groaned in pain. "Jessy, come with us. You don't have to live like this anymore!" Mary looked reluctant.
Then Sota heard a scream. She whipped around to see Nevada holding Wash by her neck. She feebly kicked her legs and hit his arms, but he didn't seem phased at all. "SAGE!"
"Come on, Joy, we have to help her!" Mary got up and raced over,
Sota following close behind. Sota went ahead as a distraction as Mary circled around and hit Wash out of Nev's grip. Wash crumbled to the ground, gasping for breath.
Mary and Sota faced Nevada. He sauntered toward them then charged. The three were locked in combat that usually resulted in Mary and Sota being sent flying, but they were able to get a couple good hits in. Still, the brute wasn't backing down.
Mary tried to catch her breath, but Nev's attacks were relentless and barely gave her time to breath. Sota tried to jump in the fight several times, but she was just no match for him. She'd never seen him fight before! He was incredible!
"Holden!" Mary yelped, trying to keep up with his strikes. Sota's eyes widened and she stared incredulously at Nevada. He was the man from the picture? Nevada was Holden! Mary's friend! Why was he fighting her? "Holden, stop!" Mary screamed before Nev finally got the upper hand and knocked her feet from under her. He then stomped on her stomach and somehow, even with her armor on, knocked the wind out of her.
"MARY!" Sota yelled and zapped right next to Nevada, ready for a fight, but he seemed to freeze in shock. She smirked. Hadn't he ever seen her armor's power? She threw a couple kicks and punches. Also getting out her gun and firing, but he dodged and blocked every one of her attacks.
However, he wasn't fighting with the same verocity as before. He went to throw a punch but she zapped away. Nev growled and back kicked her straight in the gut. She crumpled to the ground, dazed. That didn't feel like any natural kick. It was as if Goliath himself had full on kicked her. His strength... was almost artificial. That must've been his armor's power!
Nevada pinned her done just by pressing on her armor. "Louis?" He grunted and Sota frowned. "What? No!" She struggled underneath him. "Let me go!" She cried before Mary started firing at Nevada. He immediately jumped back and charged at his assailant.
Sota sat up with a wince. What did he call her? Louis? Who was that? Her head spun. What had just happened? She slowly stood up to see Mary had her helmet knocked off. She had a bloody nose and stared up at Nevada almost pleadingly. She was begging him for something... but what?
She took a step forward to help, but she heard a gun cock and the barrel up against the back of her head. "I won't tell you again, Sota, you're coming with me." Sota's gaze hardened. "Go ahead, blow my head off! But the Director obviously wants me alive!" She challenged.
Gin chuckled. "Oh I'm not going to kill you." She lowered the barrel and Sota spun around only to be shot in the leg with a tanquilizer. "Agh!" She felt her muscles relax and she practically fell into Virginia's arms.
Wait! What happened to Georgia and Missouri? Was Wash okay? Did Delaware make it? What about Six?
She was only conscious for a few more moments, but just long enough to see Nevada running towards her, seeming to yell in protest. She just saw Mary on the ground, then everything went black.
