Chapter 13
Dawnmist paced beside the river. What is taking them so long! She was starting to get worried. The sound of the river slightly calmed her, but it didn't do much.
It felt like moons before a white pelt and sandy colored pelt emerged from the reefs nearby. "What took so long?" Dawnmist growled as they approached.
"I couldn't find Angel and then when I found her I explain everything that happened," Breezeflight huffed. Dawnmist looked at Angel. "So, you know we have new names?" she asked. Angel nodded.
Dawnmist nodded with satisfaction, "Alright lets go." She led her friends to the stepping stones and gracefully made her way to the other side. Angel and Breezeflight weren't as graceful.
Once they were all on the other side of the river they stood and looked into Sunclan's forest. "I can't believe we are going back. After a moon of our clans thinking we were dead. What are we going to even say?" Breezeflight breathed.
Dawnmist hung her head, "I don't know. Oh Starclan help us!" Breezeflight layed his tail on her shoulders comfortingly. "What clan are we going to first?" he meowed.
Dawnmist shrugged, "I don't know." "Hey didn't y'all tell me you have a gathering every full moon," Angel cut in. Dawnmist looked up at the white she-cat, confusion clear in her green eyes.
"Yes, why?" she asked suspiciously. Angel looked up at the sun, which was place at the sunhigh mark. "Tonight is the full moon," Angel meowed.
Dawnmist looked to Breezeflight. They both knew exactly what to do. "Lets start walking to the gathering island," she meowed.
*------------------*
Dawnmist dug her claws into the soft bark of the treebridge. The moon was beginning to rise into the sky as they jumped onto the gathering island.
She breathed in the stale scents of both Sunclan and Shadeclan. Breezeflight stood beside. They both were tense and nervous about confronting there kin.
Squirrelstar and Nightpelt are going to kill me! Thank goodness I already have my warrior name because if I didn't Squirrelstar would surely not make me a warrior after what's about to happen.
She sighed and sat down. Angel touched her tail tip to her shoulder. "Its ok to feel nervous about seeing your kin after a while. But don't let that ruin your mission. Don't let it ruin your purpose of being here tonight," Angel meowed.
Dawnmist purred, "Thank you Angel. We are going to need all the help we can get."
The moon was now at its highest peak. Full of light and shining down brightly on the island. The clans would be here and second.
Dawnmist, Breezeflight, and Angel huddled in a safe spot where no one could see or smell them.
Dawnmist stiffened as she saw pelts move across the treebridge. The scent of Shadeclan wafted towards her. Starclan help us!
She felt Breezeflight tense beside her as Sunclan followed close behind Shadeclan. Dawnmist looked into the clearing where every cat gathered.
Cats were chattering on peacefully, not having a clue about what's about to happen. Dawnmist's gaze focused in on one cat.
A dark russet ginger she-cat with a long fluffy tail. Squirrelstar! Her mother was talking with Stormcloud at the base of the Great Oak.
Dawnmist's breath caught in her throat as Squirrelstar and Branchstar leaped onto the branches of the Great Oak. "May the gathering begin," Squirrelstar yowled.
Branchstar stepped forward first. "We have two new warriors, Beestripe and Fernrose," Branchstar meowed. Sunclan and Shadeclan cats cheered for the new warriors.
Dawnmist looked to Breezeflight. He looked proud of his siblings, not showing a bit of jealousy or disappointment.
Branchstar nodded to Squirrelstar for her to speak. "We also have a new warrior, Shadeleaf," she meowed proudly.
Dawnmist peaked through some leaves to get a glimpse of her brother. Her looked bigger than the last time she saw him. He also looked strong and confident.
The two clans cheered once more for her brother. Next was the hard part.
Dawnmist tensed beside Breezeflight, ready to make their grand entrance. "The gathering is now over!" Squirrelstar yowled and got ready to jump down to her clanmates.
Dawnmist jumped out of her hiding spot with Breezeflight at her side and yowled, "Wait!"
Every cat turned to look at them. They all had astonished looks on their faces. Squirrelstar had her mouth open with shock and astonishment.
Dawnmist stared into her mothers eyes. She and Breezeflight walked through the crowd of cats up to the Great Oak.
Squirrelstar stood on her branch in utter disbelief. Nightpelt immediately ran up to Dawnmist.
He rapped his tail around her and pulled her close. "I thought you had died," he whimpered. Dawnmist licked his cheek, "I know and I'm so sorry. I will explain."
Dawnmist and Breezeflight stood in front of both clans. All of them still had wide eyes and looks of disbelief and shock.
"A moon ago we faked our deaths on the order of Starclan," Dawnmist began. Muttering broke out through the cats.
Dawnmist continued, "We were sent on a mission. Starclan told us that they wanted us to find two new homes for two new clans that we must lead."
More muttering and gasps of shock followed her words. "What are you talking about? Why would Starclan want two apprentices to lead two new clans that we don't even know about," some cat yowled.
Mutters of agreement came after the statement. Dawnmist raised her tail for silence, "Starclan doesn't want apprentices leading these new clans. That's why during our journey they gave us our warrior names. I am now Dawnmist and this is Breezeflight."
Meows of surprise and disbelief filled the clearing. Out of the crowd came four cats.
They all raced up to Breezeflight and started licked him everywhere. "My kit is alive! He's alive!" Briarwing cried into the sky.
Lionfur was beside her, nuzzling Breezeflight affectionately. "You stupid furball! We thought you were dead," Fernrose cuffed him around the ear playfully.
Beestripe butted his head into his brothers shoulder. "I'm glad to have you back. You've missed a lot since you've been gone," Beestripe winked.
Dawnmist loved watching the family reunion, but there were more important things to discuss. Dawnmist turned back to the gathered cats.
"Me and Breezeflight have found two perfect homes for the two new clans. One clan will live by the rivers and will swim and hunt in the water. The other clan will live on the moor where they can run fast and chase rabbits," Dawnmist meowed.
Every cat was now interested as they thought to themselves. Dawnmist glanced at Squirrelstar when she finally jumped down from the Great Oak.
Squirrelstar walked up to Dawnmist, they were so close Dawnmist could feel her mothers breath on her muzzle.
"I thought you were dead. I mourned for sunrises on end. I was finally excepting it, until you come barging in here alive and expecting me to listen to you. Dawnmist, I felt terrible. I thought your fake death was my fault. Now I come to find out that all of my pain and mourning was for nothing," Squirrelstar spat furiously.
Dawnmist backed away, wide eyed and shocked. Nightpelt ran up Squirrelstar and tried to smooth her bristling fur with his tail. But Squirrelstar just pushed him away.
"How could you do that to me? The better question is, why? All of this you say means nothing to me. I do not care if two new clans rise. I do not care if you leave Shadeclan forever and help build a new clan. I don't even care if you become a rogue and I never see you again. You didn't care about how I felt, so I don't care about how you feel," Squirrelstar growled.
Dawnmist felt like someone just raked a pawful of claws through her heart. Nightpelt stared at Squirrelstar in shock. Her bitter and heartless words shocked them both.
"Shadeclan, we're leaving!" Squirrelstar growled. Nightpelt ran over to Dawnmist and licked her cheek. "We will figure this out. Lets just give her some time to digest this. Why don't you come back with us. Back home," Nightpelt meowed.
Dawnmist pulled away from her father. She wanted to melt away when she saw his sad expression. "Shadeclan is not my home anymore. Just, please take care of her for me. Oh and Shadeleaf," she meowed.
Nightpelt sighed, "Of course. My Starclan light your path Dawnmist."
Dawnmist watched as her father ran after his clanmates. She saw a glimpse of Shadeleaf walking beside Squirrelstar.
Dawnmist hung her head sadly. Branchstar sat down beside her. "I believe in Starclans mysterious wishes and requests. I don't know how you and Breezeflight could do it. I know I surely could not. I would like to talk some more about Starclans message to you. I believe I could offer some help and advise," Branchstar winked.
Dawnmist purred, "I would appreciate that a lot." Brnachstar got to his paws slowly, "Good. Now why don't you come spend the night in Sunclan for awhile."
Dawnmist purred and then stopped when she remembered Angel. "Umm Branchstar. We made a friend along our who helped us a lot, may she come too?"
Branchstar nodded, "Of course."
After grabbing Angel, Dawnmist set out with Sunclan into the chilly air.
