Laurence, but she prefers "Laurie", Rutherford hates all proper 1813 English terminology. "Promenade", too french. "Swoon", just say overreactive and get on with it. The worst one being: "Your Grace". Laurie thinks it is pathetic. Why should a man get such a title, when she, being a woman, receives as much respect in society as an earthworm? Laurie lives by the statement "I will respect you when you respect me". And so far, she hasn't been all that successful.
Life in 1813, for a woman, isn't the best of times. Hardly futuristic. Unfair in every scenario. Not very ahead of its time. So boring would be the correct terminology, Laurie believes. And with the season looming, Laurie's period of peace is running out of time. No more relaxing at home, and only ever showing her face when her four older brothers have guests over. No more speaking her mind, because, as mother dearest says, "that kind of language shall not get you a decent husband!". It's not her first season, but it most certainly will not be her last. You see, Laurie is of the mischief-chaser type. Always searching for a trap to set, or for a Lord to annoy. No one wants to marry the infamous Miss Laurence Rutherford. She brings bad news to her family name, and her mother is sick of it.
Four handsome, intelligent, and well-behaved sons before Laurie came along, set rather unrealistic expectations for Lady Rutherford. Upon finding out the sex of her fifth child, Lady Rutherford scheduled an easy upbringing, and was delighted by the prospects having a daughter could provide ─ buying a wedding dress, talking about possible suitors, complaining about all the men in the house, that kind of shit. Instead, Lady Rutherford was very unhappily surprised with the outcome and practically got slapped across the face when Laurie turned out to be the childish, naughty adult she is today.
Instead of letting her off lightly, Lady Rutherford is not going to let her daughter, Laurie out of her sight. No more petty tantrums at banquets. No more wreaking havoc around the family estate. No more denying perfectly good proposals because Laurie "doesn't feel like it". Laurie isn't even permitted to ride the family horses from now on because she can cause too much trouble. Marrying Laurie off isn't just so she can settle down, and do her duty as a woman in 1813 society, but because Lady Rutherford will do anything to get Laurie off of her hands.
The season arrives with proposal after proposal, and soiree after soiree, and Laurie doesn't change one bit. She is still the mischievous, men-repeller, men-hating girl she was the previous season, and Lady Rutherford is beginning to think that her daughter always will be.
If only there was someone just as badly behaved, just as rowdy, and just as headstrong as Laurie to whisk her away with a ring on her left finger, and a baby on the way . . .
Oh wait, there is! Laurie isn't the only one being banished from every banquet she attends. Maybe now, she won't be so lonely . . .

i mentally and physically need someone to write laurie so i can meet her
as we know, the duke isn't as badly behaved as this summary makes laurie out to be, but just remember that scene where he does actually get kicked out of a bar, which is how this entire plot came about
laurie is just causing mischief (e.g insulting high-class people, "accidentally" spilling drinks, you can fill in the rest right?) and the duke occasionally gets a little drunk and does the same, and bam, they both get kicked out of the ball they are at, and they meet
they both know each other before finding each other, on the porch or gardens or whatever, at one of these balls but haven't interacted properly before now, because laurie's mother didn't think the duke a suitable husband
naturally, she isn't too fond of simon at the first interaction, because he's a man, and therefore has more freedom than she does in their society, which she hates
getting kicked out of a ball they are both at has to happen at least three times, and every time, the other one is always there too
laurie thinks that the idea of marrying the duke would infuriate her mother, so laurie decides to "pursue" him as such (just making it clear that she is somewhat friends with simon to her mother basically)
so they get close and yay
