Chapter 4 : Forget Me Not
Wonwoo liked gardens– he's always been, Mingyu wouldn't be surprised if in the end he found the man sitting alone in the garden behind the hospital. Before finding Wonwoo, Jihoon helped him find the man with the CCTV camera. They didn't find a single trace of Wonwoo found in the halls of the hospital or in the elevator – that means he didn't come out of his room at all. Mingyu forced his brain to work at times like this, he was a little relieved when he found a memory that might help him find Jeon Wonwoo. He remembered Wonwoo always staring out the window and until now Mingyu had never really wondered what the man was seeing out there. When Mingyu tried to find out – in the midst of panic and fear if his hypothesis was wrong, he found a hidden garden between two hospital buildings. That's when he felt a little relieved-although not completely. Wonwoo went there.
Like deja vu, Mingyu jumped through the window thinking of Wonwoo doing the same thing a moment ago. Jihoon who saw that just looked at him worriedly, doubt radiated from his face –as if he didn't believe Mingyu could find Wonwoo just from his memories of what the man liked. But Jihoon didn't say anything and just gave him an umbrella.
"It's still raining outside." And yes, Mingyu thought back to the rain that was still flushing the city. Mingyu was sure Wonwoo didn't have an umbrella with him and he must be getting wet.
After walking around the small garden, Mingyu found Wonwoo soaking wet in the middle of the garden which was not protected by any single leaves. He sat up and hugged his knees, his head falling between them. He closed his eyes and didn't look like he was crying, Mingyu thought he had fallen asleep instead.
For a few seconds Mingyu only looked at Wonwoo. Trying to get inside his mind, trying to understand what he was doing. Mingyu's imagination pushed him into Wonwoo's mind. Very dark place to enter. It was too dark and Mingyu felt like he was lost, just like Wonwoo was lost in himself.
When Mingyu realized that he was cold, his common sense cursed him. Wonwoo must also be feeling the cold right now but he didn't want to disturb the man. Mingyu realized a new habit after he met Jeon Wonwoo again. Mingyu liked to wait for the man – leaving the reins in Wonwoo's hands and Mingyu will only follow him as far as the safe limits he set for himself allow. And before, Mingyu didn't seem to remember that he was such a patient person. But for Wonwoo, he wanted to wait for the man. Therefore, even though he was cold to death –maybe Wonwoo too, Mingyu just opened his umbrella –he realized he had been carrying an umbrella but didn't open it at all, and he covered Wonwoo's small body.
The rain was no longer wetted the body but Mingyu knew he couldn't do anything to block the wind and cold. Actually Mingyu was very frustrated at this time, he really wanted to scream – shout anything. But he couldn't corner Wonwoo anymore. It was enough to disappoint the man by disappearing without a word – he informed Jihoon but that's not important now.
Mingyu was starting to reach his limit – it had been 10 minutes of their silence and even for Mingyu, his knuckles were turning white and he felt numb all over from the cold. Mingyu had already taken a step forward to carry out the plan he had been thinking about for a long time –carry Wonwoo and go back into the hospital then do whatever it takes to make his body warm again, with his consent. It was then that he heard a whisper. Yes, nothing more or less than a whisper. A whisper that sounded so weak and a little hard to hear under the pouring rain. But like a miracle, Mingyu could hear it.
"Kim Mingyu."
"Yes?"
Wonwoo raised his head, Mingyu was a little surprised by the sharp eyes that immediately stabbed into his eyes. Because of that shock, Mingyu didn't realize that Wonwoo had thrown away the umbrella that was supposed to be blocking them. The two of them were under the pouring rain again. Those sharp eyes gradually softened – there were a lot of words Wonwoo wouldn't say behind those eyes, Mingyu knew.
"One more month, until the last day of your vacation. Please, Gyu."
Jeon Wonwoo, he begged again.
"Please, stay with me."
Mingyu didn't know what he was doing, there was no logical reason for what he was doing. Ah, maybe there's one thing – he wanted to make Wonwoo feel warm again. Mingyu pulled Wonwoo's body and forced him to stand up, then he hugged him tightly as if there was no tomorrow for them. Wonwoo's body felt cold – just like his, and there was nothing Mingyu could do but tighten his embrace even more.
"Sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?"
"Sorry."
"Kim Mingyu, it's okay if you don't want to grant my wish. I understand –"
" Sorry ." Mingyu himself was surprised to hear his rising tone, Wonwoo's body stiffened in his arms. Mingyu felt even more guilty.
"Sorry, I will never leave you again. I will always be with you until you get fed up with me and kick me out. I promise."
" Hyung , can you tell me what one of my good trait is?" Wonwoo was playing with Minwoo – his cat when Mingyu suddenly barged into his room and surprised the man. Wonwoo seemed to be repeating Mingyu's words in his head, but then he failed.
"What?"
Mingyu dropped his body beside Wonwoo and asked again. "My good trait, Jeon Wonwoo. Apart from being handsome, what are my good traits? You know, someone just confessed his feelings to me. The woman said all my strengths that made her like me. When I heard it, I actually felt that I had no good traits at all. She said it in a tone as if everything she said was a lie."
Wonwoo put Minwoo down from his arms, and the cat ran out of the room. Mingyu winced when he realized he forgot to close the door when he entered. Now Wonwoo looked at him straight and smiled a little.
"Do you really believe what I'm about to say?"
Mingyu nodded seriously.
"Kim Mingyu, you.. You are someone who always keeps your word."
Wonwoo's fingertips gently touched Mingyu's nose, then he stood up and left the room looking for Minwoo. The words and the way Wonwoo treated him made Mingyu feel like he was sick. His face felt very hot.
"Mingyu, did you really promise me? You never break your promise."
Mingyu felt that deja vu again, his face heated up – this time he knew pain wasn't the reason behind it.
"I promise, Jeon. I promise."
***
After that day, Wonwoo and himself both fell ill. Mingyu felt guilty for Jihoon because the man was like his and Wonwoo's personal doctor. Jihoon had been quite busy with his internship activities in the ICU, now he had to be even more preoccupied with the fact that his two friends had a high fever and he was the one who had to take care of them because Mingyu insisted he only wants Jihoon to care for him. Jihoon came to Wonwoo's room three times a day, bringing medicine and a thermometer to check his patient's temperature. Despite falling sick, Mingyu was grateful every day. He felt one step closer to Wonwoo after that day and after sharing the identity of a 'patient'. Even though their heads were spinning and their bodies were shivering, Wonwoo and Mingyu often laughed together. Wonwoo was forced to watch the movies Mingyu liked when they had nothing else to do and were too bored from just lying on each other's beds – yes, Mingyu still survived on his folding bed. Mingyu managed to make Wonwoo like Interstellar and on the other hand Wonwoo also managed to force Mingyu to read The Seventh Day. Mingyu didn't like reading novels, even when they were kids Wonwoo couldn't force him to. But The Seventh Day was the first novel and the best novel Mingyu had ever read –sounds ridiculous didn't it? Not everyone got the best on their first experience. Mingyu really had to thank him because his best friend had such a great taste in reading. The Seventh Day had a truly fantastic story. The author –Yu Hua- was very able to describe with his words how the main character's life lived 7 days after his death.
Mingyu found him and Wonwoo still discussing the novel even after 3 days. Wonwoo must have liked this novel so much because it's the only story from the novels he read that he remembered. Mingyu wanted to re-read the novel one more time and he really did, he fell asleep at 4 o'clock and woke up when the sun was really up. He didn't find Wonwoo in the same room as him and he panicked. Jihoon came into the room at just the right moment before Mingyu went crazy again like the last time he lost Wonwoo. Jihoon brought the news that Wonwoo had gone out with Soonyoung –what did they do?! Like it or not, Mingyu frowned, disliking whatever these two would do together. Why didn't Wonwoo just ask him out?
Mingyu couldn't calm down while waiting for Wonwoo to come back and Jihoon who was sleeping exhausted on the couch didn't help him at all. Wonwoo returned after 4 hours and 35 minutes of disappearing from Mingyu's sight. Soonyoung deliberately didn't want to look at him and instead joined Jihoon on the couch that should only accommodate one body – but considering Jihoon had a small body it all made more sense. Mingyu could hear Soonyoung snoring a few minutes later.
Wonwoo just smiled at him and Mingyu realized that Wonwoo had just bought a Polaroid camera with Soonyoung.
"What for? And why didn't you just ask me?"
"I didn't want to disturb your sleep, after all Soonyoung said he knew a good camera brand because his brother was a photographer." Mingyu felt the reason was not enough, his face was still wrinkled with distaste. Wonwoo just laughed it off –damn it.
"I want to learn to use the camera, maybe you can teach me on this one?"
Mingyu's smile returned and he started moving towards Wonwoo to teach the man how to take good pictures – especially since this type of camera was a polaroid camera. Half an hour later they had taken tons of photos, of themselves, of Jihoon and Soonyoung that still asleep even after the sun had gone down. The two of them looked like soldiers who had just returned from the battlefield, looking tired and in need of hibernation.
Mingyu thought Wonwoo would forget about the polaroid the next day, but apparently not – it seemed he also wrote down the polaroid things on his sticky notes . Speaking of sticky notes , Wonwoo still needed an hour of his privacy and Mingyu acted like he didn't know what Wonwoo did on a daily basis. The whiteboard was always upside down when Mingyu came back and Mingyu never asked anything.
After completely recovering, Mingyu was surprised to find Wonwoo coming out of the room and chatting with the people around him – the nurses, doctors, and even the patients on the 5th floor. The man could even joke about his illness, he always started their conversation with "I have dementia, so I'm sorry if I have to ask for your name again tomorrow and I forgot what we talked about today." His interlocutors usually laughed at how casually Wonwoo said that. Mingyu really appreciated whoever Wonwoo talked to, who usually always patiently waited for the man to finish his sentence. Even Wonwoo could stop his sentence in the middle because he forgot what word he should say, and no one complained about that.
After meeting Wonwoo again, he realized that Wonwoo usually avoided talking to anyone. He preferred to keep his mouth shut because he didn't like other people to know his weaknesses. But the Wonwoo he saw recently made him feel that the man was changing little by little, he wanted to be human again. He wanted to live.
Wonwoo had more and more headaches and Mingyu also had panic attacks more often when he saw Wonwoo in pain. But like a miracle, Wonwoo was suddenly willing to go to therapy and took even more medicine. Previously, Wonwoo didn't like doing it even though he still took the medicine little by little. Mingyu was grateful for the man's spirit to live again.
On a good day, Wonwoo took him out of the hospital and Mingyu couldn't refuse –but his bag was already filled with medicines and Wonwoo's needs were growing much. They visited Soonyoung's first trial, seeing how seriously the man charged the suspect made Wonwoo amazed at the other side of Kwon Soonyoung that he had never seen before. After the trial ended, they accompanied Soonyoung to his rooftop house because the man needed entertainment. Jihoon couldn't come to his first trial because he had to do a small operation for a patient with appendicitis that suddenly appeared. The operation went fast because Jihoon was finally able to show up at Soonyoung's house at the last moment before the man passed out from drunkenness. After that night, Wonwoo and Mingyu stayed over at Soonyoung's house more and more. Especially when Jihoon didn't have to watch the night at the hospital and Wonwoo was feeling good. Wonwoo always carried his polaroid everywhere and they lost count at how many photos he had taken. The photos were pretty good though, Wonwoo was always happy when he was praised like that.
One day when Mingyu was reading another novel from Wonwoo's pile, he got a call from his parents informing them that they were home for Kim Minji's seventeenth birthday. He invited Wonwoo to come to Minji's birthday party. When attending the birthday party, Wonwoo said he was familiar with this atmosphere in this house and Mingyu couldn't help but laugh then he explained what usually happened back then. Wonwoo ended up staying over at his house that night and the next day Mingyu found his mother talking to Wonwoo in the kitchen. Seeing their interactions, Mingyu felt that he wasn't the only one who missed Wonwoo – his mother also missed him a lot. However when they were little, Wonwoo was often in this house. In all the years Wonwoo had been missing, his mother had also felt as though her other child had abandoned her, and now he came home. For that reason, Wonwoo was asked to just stay in this house at least until the Kim couple returned abroad. Wonwoo was happy with the idea and Mingyu had no reason to reject it. They spent the weekend like a complete family. Even when Minji brought his new boyfriend, Wonwoo listened to how Mr. Kim interrogated Minji's new boyfriend. Mingyu found all of this both funny and interesting, he really wanted to live the rest of his life like these days. He was so happy.
Even though he honestly knew, Wonwoo was hiding something from him.
He could see how the man was often pensively alone when he was oblivious to Mingyu's supervision. Wonwoo always looked like he's thinking about something from the way his brow furrowed afterward, whatever in his little brain made him sad. Mingyu wanted to know, but Wonwoo always acted fine after realizing Mingyu's existence. It made Mingyu uncomfortable, but he had promised that he would put Wonwoo at the center of it all –made him do the things he only wanted to do. And Wonwoo didn't seem to want Mingyu asking what he thought when the boy was alone.
Jeon Seongwoo made amends by visiting Wonwoo more and more, but that wasn't enough to make Wonwoo really remember him. Wonwoo didn't want to remember the old man and Mingyu wondered the reason behind it. Then out of curiosity, Mingyu found out from the nurse who was always on guard on the 5th floor. According to the nurses, before Mingyu appeared, Jeon Seongwoo often left Wonwoo alone. He was often in Wonwoo's room, but he never really talked to Wonwoo. He seemed busy with his laptop or calls from his cellphone. The work was tough.
One day, Seongwoo found Wonwoo passed out with a scratch wound around his wrist –which, fortunately, was prevented before actually cutting his vein. It was then that the man knew he needed someone to accompany and focus 100% on his son –something he couldn't give. Maybe meeting Mingyu was the most perfect solution that Jeon Seongwoo had ever imagined, his new worker was his son's old friend who really cared about the man.
Sometimes Mingyu felt that a father's wish for his child to live was real and not a lie, but only this time Mingyu understood that after seeing how his wife used to kill herself, Jeon Seongwoo had succumbed to this disease ever since. So when his only child suffered from the same disease, he fought for his child even though he knew his deepest side had said that he had given up. Jeon Seongwoo was looking for an escape from his worries with his job. It was then that he lost his son. Wonwoo hadn't seen Jeon Seongwoo as his father in a long time.
But for the last time, Wonwoo gave in to his father. He wanted to come to Jeon Seongwoo's wedding –Mingyu accompanied him, as a son trying to be happy for the sake of his parent's happiness. But after the wedding ended, Mingyu never thought that Wonwoo would say something that his father would regret for the rest of his life –more than he regretted the needless death of his former wife.
Wonwoo said that he was grateful for being born into this world, he was grateful for everything and the sacrifices that Jeon Seongwoo gave him. He apologized for forgetting his own father and for giving him a lot of hurt and sadness. Finally, he asked his father to be happy with his new wife and forget about Jeon Wonwoo, just as Wonwoo had forgotten the name Jeon Seongwoo. Mingyu swore he cried when he heard this, he needed to go to the toilet so Wonwoo wouldn't see his tears. It was then, Mingyu didn't listen to Wonwoo's last wish to Jeon Seongwoo as a son.
Wonwoo requested that when he and his father met again, Wonwoo would be in the crate.
***
After Jeon Seongwoo's wedding day, Wonwoo did more and more things with Mingyu –as if he was being rushed by time.
In the end, Jihoon and Soonyoung had one free day and the four of them went to an amusement park together. Wonwoo and his obsession with playing the pirate ship has returned, this time surprising Jihoon and Soonyoung. The difference this time, Wonwoo's hands were busy with his polaroid when he laughed. He literally captured anything he could photograph –although Mingyu realized that most of the objects Wonwoo photographed was himself. Mingyu still didn't want to go on the roller coaster but Lee Jihoon really forced him to the point where he felt like he was being kidnapped by criminals. Mingyu got off the ride with tears he was laughed at but again Wonwoo captured the moment. They returned to the Tomb of Horror, this time Wonwoo didn't leave but Kwon Soonyoung's screams made them had to leave the busy couple behind. They also returned to the Italian restaurant, Mingyu and Wonwoo did the same way of eating as before and it didn't surprise Jihoon and Soonyoung who sat across from them at all. Whenever the four of them ate together, Jihoon always saw them eat like that and sometimes he wondered if they realized that action or just a reflex.
Whatever the reason, Jihoon was happy to see whatever his eyes saw because to be honest –Soonyoung also agreed with this idea, Mingyu and Wonwoo score the most perfect pictures when they are together. Jihoon and Soonyoung didn't want this scene to end, they didn't want this to end.
After eating, the sky was as dark as before. Soonyoung had wanted to say goodnight and see you later, but Wonwoo's request held him back in the meantime. Wonwoo asked the four of them to take a photo together. There was sadness in Wonwoo's eyes when he asked that and Mingyu could see it. But again Mingyu didn't say anything, he just smiled when Wonwoo asked passers-by to take pictures of the four of them.
Just one shot and Wonwoo was satisfied with the result.
In the photo, the four of them are smiling broadly. Mingyu got scolded because instead of looking at the camera he was looking at Wonwoo – but Mingyu didn't care at all because Wonwoo was much more interesting to look at, especially his smile. In that photo too, there was no fear and sadness, only two prospective doctors, a prosecutor, and someone who liked to read books were smiling as if a wonderful future awaits them. In that photo, there were only four friends –or maybe two couples?- who just wanted to be happy for today because humans never knew what would happen tomorrow.
Yes, Mingyu also didn't know what will happen tomorrow.
One day right before his one month period ended, the last day he enjoyed his vacation and he hoped it wasn't the last day he was with Jeon Wonwoo.
It all started with the disappearance of Jeon Wonwoo from his room, the cold feeling returned to Mingyu's body and he felt more scared than before. But this time he didn't panic, he just jumped Wonwoo's bedroom window and looked for the man in the garden. After walking far enough, he found Wonwoo in the same position as the day when it rained.
But this time it was different, Wonwoo smiled looking up at the very clear afternoon sky. Mingyu just realized it now but this place was quite beautiful, even though it was flanked by two buildings, the hilly curves of the land make it seem as if anyone who was there was not in the middle of the city but in the middle of the village hills. Many plants grow there, but what Mingyu often saw was sunflowers and little did he remember, those are Jeon Wonwoo's favorite flowers.
Again Mingyu didn't make a sound, he just walked calmly over to Wonwoo and sat down next to him –then he also saw the orange sky studded above them. This evening was too beautiful.
Mingyu always liked moments like this, looking up at the sky in a park with Jeon Wonwoo. They were silent but there had never been a more peaceful moment than this one. Maybe Wonwoo didn't remember, but this was something they always used to do. In the priest's garden behind the school, in Mingyu's garden, in the lakeside garden near where Wonwoo's piano lessons were. Now Mingyu just realized that the setting where his story and Jeon Wonwoo almost always end in a garden.
"Mingyu."
Mingyu turned his head and saw Wonwoo now paying attention to him. The man's eyes were deep when he spoke, and Mingyu couldn't help but nod. It's time , whatever Wonwoo hadn't told him before – now is the time. He was about to say it and Mingyu wanted to run away from whatever Wonwoo would say, but then he realized that he couldn't run away from Jeon Wonwoo.
"Hmm?"
Wonwoo smiled, he nodded at Mingyu. His smile reached his eyes and the man really looked so happy that Mingyu felt his eyes teary when he saw him.
"I guess now.. I also believe in miracles."
Mingyu was silent, he knew he was crying now but he couldn't hold back his tears anymore as his heart overflowed and he could feel Wonwoo's every feeling just by looking into his eyes.
"Mingyu, I'm happy."
Mingyu knew, the man looked very happy. Much happier than Jeon Wonwoo when he was little.
"For me.. to be able to feel this feeling again.." Wonwoo covered his mouth, when he spoke again his voice choked and he started to cry. "It's a miracle."
"You told me long ago that you wanted to see many miracles in this world, that's why you wanted to become a doctor." Mingyu nodded, for Mingyu this was also a miracle –how could Wonwoo remember those words.
"I guess Kim Mingyu, you're not someone who would just watch miracles happen. More than that, you are someone that is capable of making miracles."
Mingyu had never asked for anything in his life, it didn't matter if Wonwoo had never praised him in his life. Really, he would give anything he had to make this time stop. Even though his common sense vehemently rejected it, his heart or something inside him that knew Jeon Wonwoo more than anyone else, knew what Wonwoo would say.
"I want to see you in your own doctor's scrub and make miracles. I really want to see it, Kim Mingyu." Wonwoo smiled and his finger reached Mingyu's nose in the same way Mingyu always remembered. "I guess that's my only wish left in this world."
"You can and will see it, Wonwoo."
Wonwoo didn't say anything in response to Mingyu's words. He just looked back at the sky and slowly his smile faded. The tears had stopped flowing. When he spoke, his voice sounded much more serious.
" Go, Kim Mingyu ."
Wonwoo nodded, as if he was trying to convince himself of what he had just said.
"It's time for you to return to your life."
"I won't leave you, I promised."
"But you also promised you would go if I asked you to go."
Mingyu was silent, he knew this would happen. And Mingyu knew he was never ready.
Lee Jihoon was wrong, Wonwoo never cared about whether Mingyu left him or not – Wonwoo had always cared about other people's happiness rather than his own. He's always been like that. That's why, when Mingyu left that night, Wonwoo realized how Mingyu felt. Wonwoo knew Mingyu was afraid that the man would leave him. Wonwoo was the one who would leave Mingyu, the man noticed it that night and he cried about it. That's why he asked for a month, another month for them to stay together. Before he let Mingyu go. Before he asked Mingyu to come back to his world, because if they stayed together until the moment Wonwoo had to leave, Wonwoo knew Mingyu's life would be ruined.
One thing Wonwoo didn't know, no matter what the circumstances will be, Wonwoo's departure will always ruin Kim Mingyu's life. He had experienced it once and he did not want to experience it again.
"You have life, Kim Mingyu. Live the life that will lead you to what you want and what I want. If you keep taking care of me here, being with me all the time, it will be hard for you to get what you want. It's also hard for me to finally see you in your own doctor's scrub." Word by word, Mingyu knew Wonwoo was trying to make sense of him. But this time, Mingyu didn't want to understand. He didn't like goodbyes, especially if it involved Wonwoo's name again. He had felt it once in the past, five years was not a short time to be able to meet Wonwoo again. Now if they split up again, how long would it take until they were reunited?
" Hyung , you don't know how hard it was for me to part with you."
Mingyu closed his eyes, his head had fallen between his knees that he was hugging tightly. Mingyu hated it because he was like a child who was crying now.
"And you don't know how hard it is for me to always remember you." Wonwoo inserted a chuckle at the end of his sentence, but then his voice softened and it really touched Mingyu's heart. "But I will remember you, Kim Mingyu. I promise. Until we meet again."
Mingyu quickly raised his head. "Will we meet again? When?"
Wonwoo turned his head, his eyes filled with doubt which Mingyu found interesting. "Maybe when you put on your doctor's scrub? I said I want to see it, maybe we can meet then?"
Mingyu raised his pinky finger in front of Wonwoo's face. "Promise me, Jeon Wonwoo. Promise me that you will remember me when it comes. Never forget me again. And promise... Promise me that you won't forget our promise either."
Wonwoo smiled reassuringly, he raised his finger and grabbed Mingyu's finger.
"I promise."
After the promise was made, Mingyu's crying miraculously stopped. He casted his still hazy eyes to the horizon and saw the beautiful evening sky slowly disappear, soon darkness would envelop the sky. He only hoped that darkness would not envelop his life when this day ended. Wonwoo raised his favorite camera as Mingyu scanned the sky.
"Would you like to take a picture with me? Last time?"
Mingyu really hated using the word last time, but he didn't hate the person who said it. He nodded at the request and they did it. The last photo was them against the background of the setting sun.
Mingyu didn't know what his brain was doing this time, but behind the printed polaroid sheet he could see himself kissing Wonwoo on the cheek and Wonwoo just smiling happily there. Mingyu thought that's what a photo is for.
In a photo, only what appeared in it could explain the event. There was no past behind them and no future to haunt them. Only this moment, this precious moment that is happening right now. And for Mingyu and Wonwoo who wanted to freeze time, they did.
At least they've frozen time... in a photograph .
***
After that day, Mingyu never saw Wonwoo again. The desire to take his Volvo back to the hospital was high, but he knew Wonwoo would be disappointed in him if he saw Mingyu again before he became a doctor. Wonwoo will also be disappointed that Mingyu broke his promise. Their promise.
Mingyu never knew a promise could change someone's life. Because the promise was made, now Mingyu lives with passion. He never knew he could end up doing something as ambitious as he is doing now. Mingyu was in the library almost every day, he studied really hard. Even his lecturers were surprised by his rapidly improving grades. Mingyu wanted to graduate from the medical academy and become a doctor, he wanted to meet Wonwoo again. The timing of what happens in between was Mingyu's part to determine how long it lasts.
Things got even more difficult when Mingyu started his internship next year. Being in the same hospital as Wonwoo, honestly drove him crazy. He wanted to get into the elevator and pressed button five. He wanted to go up to the fifth floor and visit the familiar room. He really wanted to do it, but he couldn't. It is not time yet. When he missed Wonwoo, he would work even crazier –taking patients who honestly weren't his part, reading medical books that would broaden his horizons. Mingyu did whatever he could to make his wish to go up to the 5th floor be forgotten for a moment.
When he was alone in his room, Mingyu always thought of Wonwoo –he couldn't do anything not to miss that boy, it just happened. When that time came, Mingyu went to the bookstore and bought all of Wonwoo's favorite novels. He didn't know that Wonwoo had made him a novel lover, but he didn't regret doing it. Reading Wonwoo's favorite novel made him understand the empty places inside this man. That made it better.
Unlike him, Lee Jihoon often met Wonwoo. They're still friends as usual and Jihoon kept telling Mingyu how it's been from Wonwoo. Jihoon said Wonwoo was well taken care of by the nurses on his floor –because now he's more open to his surroundings. Wonwoo never did anything terrible again because Jihoon could see the light of life from his eyes even though it was a hard day for Wonwoo. Mingyu had a little hope that Wonwoo would also want to see him again as much as he wanted to see that man again –that's what made him passionate about living. On the other hand, Jihoon informed that Wonwoo's medicines were getting more and more, as well as the more frequent his therapy –that meant his illness was getting worse. Jihoon didn't tell Mingyu about Wonwoo who couldn't speak clearly anymore because he didn't want to make the man worried, but Jihoon thought Mingyu could guess it. Lately, Wonwoo had been having more and more trouble walking and there was a time when he forgot what he had just done.
Another year ended after Mingyu's apprenticeship began. Jihoon went into Wonwoo's room to find that the man had forgotten him and Soonyoung –he had even forgotten his own name. Jeon Wonwoo could only lie on his bed and his eyes kept looking at the photos of Kim Mingyu which he pasted on a separate whiteboard other than a whiteboard that was full of sticky notes. Little Jihoon understood, the man forced himself to remember Mingyu. Mingyu's name was even more important than his own name and it made Jihoon's heart squeeze in pain.
There was only one month left for Mingyu to get his bachelor degree. One more month, he must be patient. Yes, there was only one month left until the finish line, that's when he heard from Jihoon that Wonwoo had fallen into a coma.
And Mingyu felt his world collapsed at that moment.
Things were all good yesterday
Then the devil took your breath away
Now we're left here in the pain
