A thing from ATP6
(A/N. I fixed it.)
"I miss Hugh." Rosa groaned, laying dramatically on her couch.
Cheren and Bianca sat on the floor in front of Rosa's TV set and Hilda was sitting on N's lap in a recliner.
"He'll be back on Friday, chill." Cheren hissed, flipping through the channels.
Rosa glared at the raven-haired boy and pretended to strangle him.
"You think I can't see you in the TV set?"
Rosa groaned and stared at the ceiling.
"Where is Hugh?" N asked, being the last to know.
"Undella town with his family." Rosa answered.
"Don't you have a Pokémon with wings?" Cheren asked dryly, "Wait...don't you have two?" He gasped, smirking.
Rosa glared at Cheren, "Shut up. You're an idiot."
Cheren rolled his eyes.
"I can't just show up there," Rosa explained, "Hughy is with his family."
"You've been friends for so many years," Hilda said, "Don't they consider you family?"
"I guess..."
"I'm sure lover boy would love to see you, Rosa," Cheren said muting the tv.
"What do you mean 'lover boy'? I'm not in love with Hugh." Rosa said.
"Well isn't he in love with you?"
Rosa blinked and sat up, "Is he?"
Cheren turned to Rosa, "It wasn't obvious to you?"
Rosa blushed, "No!"
"Really?" Bianca asked, getting up to sit on the now available couch, "You didn't notice?"
"Notice what?" Rosa asked, throwing her hands up, "There was nothing to notice!"
"Oh please!" Hilda scoffed, "Cheren was more subtle when he liked me!"
Rosa, surprised, looked to Cheren, "You used to like Hilda?"
Cheren's face turned red, "That was a long time ago!"
Rosa caught N place a kiss on Hilda's hand, glaring at Cheren all the while.
Cheren saw it as well and rolled his eyes, getting up and sitting next to Bianca.
"So you all think Hughy likes me?" Rosa asked.
"We thought you liked him as well." N said.
"Well I think this is great!" Bianca chirped.
"How so?" Rosa asked.
"Well if you two go out, you already know everything about each other! It'll be like starting on the fifteenth date!"
"Yeah well it'll be like starting on the fifteenth date." Hilda said.
"Also a good point..."
"I'm just saying! Once you're on the fifteenth date you're already in a very relationshippy place. You're committed."
Rosa frowned, "That's true."
"Well think about it," Bianca said, "You and Hugh."
"Me and Hugh, huh?" Rosa whispered.
He always cared about her. Always stood up for her, though, he normally was the one who needed to be stood up for. Kids would tease him a lot, and Rosa would always be there to beat them up. But on their journey, that role kind of flipped. She found herself clinging to Hugh for support more often, and she found he wasn't clinging to her as much as he used to. Admittedly, that had made her a little upset, but she knew if he really needed her he would say so.
He was her first kiss, but she didn't really make much out of it- and neither did he. Just a favor. Wasn't it?
Sometimes if they shared a room at the Pokémon Center, he would force her to share a bed with him because he was cold. Rosa would then complain of being hot, but she stayed with Hugh. He made her feel safe. He always had a way of making her feel safe.
"I...I don't know..." Rosa admitted, blushing.
Hilda nodded, "You can't rush your feelings. You think about it some more. You've got four days until Hugh comes back."
"But you know the first thing he'll do is come see her." Cheren said.
"EVERYONE GET OUT OF MY HOUSE SO I CAN THINK!"
~~~
"Hughy? Are you okay?" Rosa asked, ear pressed against her friend's bedroom door. He had rushed out of class as soon as the final bell rang without waiting for Rosa. They normally walked home together, so she found it odd how quickly he left.
"I'm fine." Hugh said.
"Can I come in?"
"I don't care"
With the 'ok' from Hugh, Rosa opened his door and walked inside his room. She found him laying face down on his bed, face in his pillow.
Rosa layed down on her stomach next to him, "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Fine." his muffled voice replied.
"Were those fifth graders picking on you again?" She asked.
Hugh grew deathly silent, answering Rosa's question without even having to speak.
"What have they been picking on you for anyways? What do I have to beat them up for?"
Hugh picked up his head and smiled faintly, "You're the smallest girl in the third grade! You'd get destroyed."
"Who cares? Nobody picks on my best friend and lives say they did it!"
Hugh laughed and Rosa knew that now she'd be able to get Hugh to tell her what she needed to know.
"So what's the matter, Hughy?" She asked.
Hugh shrugged, "They just keep picking on me because I..." he trailed off.
"Because?"
Hugh was silent.
"Hughy..."
"They make fun of me cause I've never kissed a girl..." he mumbled.
"What?!" Rosa shrieked, "That's stupid! I bet they haven't even kissed any girls, either!"
Hugh shrugged.
Rosa's eyebrows scrunched together, as she was deep in thought. As an idea came to her, her face lit up. She sat up and commanded Hugh to do so as well.
"Hughy, I've got a plan!" The child exclaimed.
Hugh frowned, "Nothing good ever happens when you say that..."
Rosa blushed, "Shut up! You're a liar!"
Hugh rolled his eyes, "What's your plan, Rosa?"
"You can kiss me!"
Hugh blushed, "What?! No way, that's gross!"
Rosa frowned, "Hey!"
"You're my best friend, Rosa!"
"That's why I'm going to do you this favor!" Rosa explained, clearly proud of the plan she had conjured up.
Hugh looked down, "What if they don't believe me when I tell them we..." he cringed, "Kissed?"
"I'll back you up, Hugh! It's what best friends are for!"
Hugh sighed, "Fine."
Hugh shifted his weight awkwardly, "So...What now?"
"You um...kiss me." Rosa said, finally feeling the awkwardness of the situation. She closed her eyes as Hugh leaned in.
"Why are your eyes closed?" Hugh asked. Rosa could feel his breath.
"That's what you're supposed to do!"
"Why?"
"I-I don't know! That's what they do in the movies!"
Then, Rosa felt Hugh's lips touch hers. He quickly pulled away and they opened their eyes.
"That was weird...What's the big deal?" Rosa wondered.
Hugh shrugged, "I-I don't know..."
Rosa's face lit up, "Well now that that's done with, I've got a new plan! Going through your snack cabinet!" She exclaimed, scrambling down from Hugh's bed and out the door.
"Weird..." Hugh muttered, ignoring the new unsettling feeling in his stomach and chasing after his friend.
~~~
Rosa laid on her bed and stared at her ceiling.
Do I like Hugh? She wondered, going over the past few months.
~
"Hugh!" Rosa cried, tackling her best friend in a hug, "Are you okay?"
Hugh wrapped his arms around his friend, "Yeah I'm fine...are you alright? Did those Plasma freaks hurt you?"
Rosa shook her head in Hugh's chest, "No...Hughy I was worried about you! The ice blast didn't get you, did it?"
Hugh chuckled, "No, Rosa. I'm fine."
"Are you sure?" Rosa asked, looking up into Hugh's eyes.
Hugh smiled lightly, "Yeah," he assured, stroking his friend's hair, "I'm really okay, Rosa."
Rosa sniffled, "Really?"
"Yes."
~
Rosa scoffed. That didn't mean anything! She was just worried about her friend! Team Plasma's ice blast covered all of Opelucid City! What if he had gotten hurt?
"Ptf...That doesn't mean I like him!" Rosa said to herself, crossing her arms, "Why does everyone think I like him, anyway?"
~
Rosa walked into a coffee shop with Hilda at her heels.
"Hey," Hilda said, tapping Rosa for her attention. She pointed to a table near the window, "Isn't that Hugh?"
Rosa followed Hilda's gaze and found Hugh sitting at a table with a girl she had never seen before. She saw Hugh's lips move and the girl across from him giggled.
Rosa glared at the stranger, "Who is she?" She hissed.
Hilda smirked, "Jealous?"
"No!" Rosa denied, "It's just...Who the hell is that bitch?"
Hilda rolled her eyes, "Why don't you ask him?"
Rosa thought it over, "Hmm...I think I'll do one better."
Rosa strolled over to Hugh and the strange girl, leaving Hilda behind to watch with amusement.
"Hughy!" Rosa chirped, using the sweetest voice she could muster.
Hugh looked up, "Rosa?"
Rosa grinned, "Hi Hughy!"
The mysterious girl looked between Hugh and Rosa, "Hugh? You know her?" She asked.
Hugh nodded, "This is my friend Rosa. Rosa this is-"
"-Hughy? You're cheating on me?" Rosa gasped dramatically.
The girl sitting with Hugh stood up, "Um...Well I'll see you later Hugh." She swiftly exited the coffee shop, not bothering to look back.
"You're welcome!" Rosa chirped, patting her friend's head.
"That was for my benefit?" Hugh asked.
"Yeah? I saved you! She looked like a hoe."
"Jealous..." Hilda coughed, appearing next to Rosa. Rosa elbowed Hilda in the gut.
~
Okay, so what if she was a bit jealous? That doesn't mean that she liked him! She could see why others would think so, but Rosa was just looking out for her best friend.
Though, she had to admit- when Hugh had called her his "friend", her heart fell into her stomach.
~
"Rosa I'm cold!" Hugh complained from the bed next to Rosa's.
They were staying in a Pokémon Center, sharing a room.
"I'm not giving you my blanket, Hugh." Rosa snapped.
"Please?" Hugh begged.
"No!"
Hugh pouted. Rosa heard his covers shift and suddenly his voice was right next to her, "Scoot." He commanded.
"I'm sorry?" Rosa asked, opening her eyes to see Hugh towering over her.
"Scoot over!" He hissed.
"Why?"
"I'm cold!"
Rosa sighed and scooted over. Hugh climbed into bed next to her. Now he had double the blankets and the added body heat of another person.
"C'mere," Hugh said, "You're warm."
Rolling her eyes, Rosa moved into Hugh's embrace, wrapping her arms around him. She flinched slightly at the cold temperature of his hands.
Hugh nestled his face into Rosa's hair, and pulled her closer, trying to soak up all of her warmth.
Soon enough, Rosa found herself listening to the beating of his heart. She found having his arms around her made her feel safe.
She liked that feeling.
~
Rosa blushed and hid her face in her pillow. She screamed into it.
How did this happen? How did he sneak up behind her and get her to feel this way?
When did it begin?
~
"C'mon Rosa!" An old classmate groaned, pinning Rosa against a wall.
"You gave your weirdo friend one. Why not me?"
"H-How do you even remember that?" Rosa cried, "And Hugh is not weird!"
The old classmate rolled his eyes, "Why are you friends with that loser anyways? You're too pretty to associate with someone like him."
"That's not true!"
A figure appeared behind Rosa's old classmate. They tapped his shoulder. He turned and was pulled off of Rosa, receiving a swift punch in the gut.
"Hughy!" Rosa shrieked.
Hugh glared at their old classmate, who was on the ground, clutching his stomach.
"Freak." Hugh spat, "Lay another hand on Rosa and you're dead."
Hugh took Rosa's hand, "Come on. Let's go."
Rosa blushed at the contact. For being so angry, Hugh was surprisingly gentle with her.
~
Rosa screamed into her pillow once more. Hugh would be back from vacation tomorrow. She didn't even really know how she felt.
But she'd stay up all night thinking about it.
~~~
"Rosa I'm baaaaack!" Hugh yelled upon entering his best friend's home. Rosa's mother appeared from the living room.
"Hello Hugh!" She chirped.
"Oh uh hey Ms. Black..." Hugh chuckled, blushing. He hadn't expected her to be home, "Sorry for yelling."
Rosa's mother rolled her eyes, "As if I'm not used to you entering my house yelling things already. You tend to do it a lot."
"Oh...sorry."
"Please dear it's alright! That's just you. Rosa is upstairs."
"Thanks." He chuckled, bounding up the stairs to his friends room.
He was about to open the door, but remembered the last time he opened her door without knocking. That was an interesting day. Blushing profusely at the memory, he knocked on the door.
"Come in!" Rosa's voice said.
"Rosa! I'm back!" Hugh chirped, opening the door.
Rosa was sitting on the edge of her bed, "I heard you the first time." She giggled.
Hugh blushed, "Oh..."
"You got so tan!" Rosa gasped scanning the boy up and down.
Hugh glanced down at his arms, "Ya think?"
"Yeah. You look nice." She flirted.
Hugh didn't notice, "Thanks."
Hugh flopped down face first on the bed, next to Rosa, "I'm so tired..." his muffled voice complained. His legs dangled off the edge of the bed, since he laid horizontally across the vertical bed.
Hugh felt Rosa get up from the bed and heard the door close.
"Oh yeah?" She asked.
Hugh lifted his head up and eyed his friend suspiciously, "Your mom says to keep the door open when I'm over."
Rosa blushed, "I-I wanted to talk to you."
Hugh groaned, "Can I take a nap first?"
"No!"
"Fine. What's up?" Hugh asked, directing his attention to his Xtransceiver. He felt Rosa lay down next to him. Her legs hung off the bed.
"Remember when we were kids and those fifth graders would pick on you?"
Hugh smiled mischievously, "Yeah...remember when we hit high school and I punched each of them in their faces?"
Rosa frowned, "Remember when you got suspended on the second day of school?"
Hugh chuckled, "Yeah...good times."
"Hughy?"
"Yeah?"
"Remember why they picked on you?" Rosa asked.
Hugh's face turned as red as his eyes, "No." He lied.
"Yes you do," Rosa giggled, "Your face betrays you."
Hugh turned to Rosa and blew a puff of air in her face, "You betray me."
Rosa blushed.
Hugh raised an eyebrow, Why is she blushing? he wondered.
Rosa took Hugh's right hand with her left, intertwining their fingers. She laid her right hand on top of their entwined hands.
"Remember how we got them to stop picking on you?" She asked, trying to catch Hugh's gaze.
Hugh's eyes were fixated on their hands. His whole face felt warm. He nodded, his mouth feeling too dry to talk.
After a long moment of silence, Rosa giggled nervously, "Do you really not get it, or am I going to have to spell it out for you?"
Hugh finally spoke and met Rosa's eyes, "Where is this coming from? When I left I was just your stupid friend."
"I've never thought that you were stupid."
"Rosa..."
"The guys told me you liked me..." Rosa explained, "Is it not true?" Disappointment seeping into her voice.
"N-No! I mean...they're not technically wrong. I do like you, Rosa."
"In what way?"
"That depends."
"On?"
"How you feel about me."
Rosa smiled, "Isn't it obvious?"
"No, I wouldn't say so."
Rosa leaned in and pressed her lips against Hugh's. Hugh smiled into the kiss. They broke apart when Rosa started grinning.
Hugh searched her face, "What?" He asked, a smile still prominent on his face.
Rosa shrugged, "I just can't believe it's always been you."
Hugh leaned in again, "I've always known." He said, before closing the distance once again.
