Cassie is a girl who doesn't talk. It's not she can't, she just doesn't want to. She meet Carl and the group in the beginning of the hell hole, and only talks to her brother Ky. Ky his her older brother who would keep her safe no matter what. She doesn't talk to Carl a lot, because he's a boy. After awhile, she sees him more than something else.
