Growing up in a Nation of Fire

"I'm sorry Mrs. Midoriya but I'm afraid that your son is quirkless." These words spoken by the gentle voice of Doctor Isane Kotetsu caused the room to go deathly quiet. The young boy seated across from the silver haired doctor sat in stunned silence of the news. He could barely process the news, the moment those words had loosed from the doctor's lips his blood ran cold. "His X-ray shows that his feet have both joints in the pinky toe," She pauses to turn on the light behind the mount for the x-rays behind her. "These same joints are not present in quirk users. However, little Izuku." Doctor Kotetsu continues before crouching down to the little boy's height on the chair. "This doesn't mean you're not a bender."

The boy's demeanor changed, sure he wanted to have a quirk but being a bender would be just as amazing. He lives in the Firenation after all and if you weren't a quirk user, you were most likely a firebender. "Mrs. Midoriya, may I ask if there are any benders in your family? Perhaps his father or even you?" Doctor Kotetsu questions prompting Inko to swap her attention from her son to the doctor before her. "My husband is a firebender, as well as his father and grandfather. My side mostly consists of quirk users but my great grandmother was a waterbender."

"Well little Izuku, looks like you're going to be a firebender then." She says with the utmost confidence causing the young green haired boy to bound up and down in his chair excitedly. "Now, when he manifests his bending ability, I recommend you fireproof the house and get a few extra fire extinguishers just in case." With the kind recommendation, Doctor Kotetsu ends the appointment allowing Izuku and his mother to exit and continue with their day.

Inko straps her young son into his All Might themed car seat before closing the door and walking to the driver's seat. In the back, Izuku looks out the window as Inko pulls out of the multistory car park just outside of the Mustafu general hospital. As the pair drive down the road Izuku takes in the sights of the world around him. In the distance, flying bison and their riders float about the heavens with all the freedom of the very air. Dragons slither and snake about the sky in between buildings and gliding airbenders on their way to do whatever it is airbenders do. It is the time of Quirks and Benders, the four nations live in peace with a society of heroes, benders and quirk users alike, to protect them. Wars were a thing of the ancient past, before the era of Avatar Genji, the most recent avatar and longest living. Before his passing some four years ago, Avatar Genji lived for nearly 300 years. Past the ages of both Avatar Korra and Avatar Aang. The world is a much different place now. The advancements made by humanity put a man on the moon in Avatar Genji's early childhood and now there are interplanetary colonies on the moon, Mars and Ceres.

Genji was the longest living avatar in recorded history, though some records show that most if not all Earth Bender avatars live for centuries. His deeds in unifying the world ushered in an era of peace that has lasted over 250 years. In that time in the eastern earth kingdom, (Modern day USA) a baby girl was born to two nonbender parents. This child's skin glowed like a lamp, putting off bioluminescent light for all to see. The first quirk user. In the generations since then, more and more quirk users have been born into the non bending populous, to the point now that the population who originally didn't have a bending ability has a quirk. Roughly 69% of the earth's population consists of quirk users, the smaller 30% being benders and the remaining less than one percent being the true quirkless. That population is so small that barely 10,000 individuals are completely powerless.

The prospect of him being a firebender excited the young boy greatly, he could grow up to be like some of the best firebenders ever. Avatar Roku, Firelord Zuko, General Iroh and now Endeavor and his own father, The number 2 hero Bahamut; The Dragon of the East. Hisashi Midoriya. (Hisashi, gained the title after fighting and taming a female dragon that was attacking a warehouse in Kansai Prefecture. The dragon in particular had attacked the warehouse due to several smugglers and poachers having stolen its clutch of eggs.) Izuku's childish wonder for the future was interrupted by his mother announcing that they're about to get to his school. Not only was today his birthday but it was also a field trip to the Mustafu Museum of Bending and Avatar History, which he was very excited to go on.

Izuku ran excitedly through the halls of his school after his mother signed him in and finally let him have the McDonald's they had picked up along the way. He quickly ran to his kindergarten classroom, opening the door slowly so as to not interrupt his teacher. Luckily for him the rest of his classmates and friends are having morning free time either playing with toys or drawing in coloring books. Seeing his green haired lackey get to the class, a young, blonde haired, red eyed boy named Katsuki walks up to Izuku and greets him. "So Izuku, you get any news from the doctor? You a quirk user or a bender?" He questions as Izuku sets his book bag on the ground and starts eating the chicken nuggets that came with his Happy Meal. The young blonde awaits his answer somewhat impatiently. He shifts his hand through his hair to move it out of his face, exposing a peculiar tattoo of an eye on his forehead.

"I'm a bender. The doctor says I'm gonna be a Firebender. Like my dad." Izuku responds before being given an action figure of his own dad by Katsuki.

"I was hoping you'd be a Firebender, your dad is the Dragon Of The East. What would be weird is if you were a waterbender. Now that would be silly." Katsuki responds before the two boys start their pretend game making the figures of All Might, Bahamut and Endeavor fight little Lego men they're imagining as bad guys.

As the time passes, the class is soon rounded up and prepared to head out to the bus. There Katsuki, Izuku and their two friends Garaki, a young chubby boy with red bat wings and Tsubasa, a lanky kid with a finger extension quirk, are seated together. There they talk about what they wanted to do when they grew up. As the bus arrives at the museum the kids are greeted with the emblems of the four nations in a golden crest. This crest held in the hand of the statue of Avatar Genji standing before the main entrance. The chaperones usher the kids from the bus and to a tour guide waiting at the entrance of the museum.

"Our tour will consist of the events of the most recent avatar cycle starting from Avatar Roku." The tour guide begins as she walks the class to the first exhibit. Here a statue of Avatar Roku is depicted in his elder years in front of a wall of golden flames with a sun stone above his head. "Known as Roku the Forgiving, Avatar Roku saw the inklings of the fire nation's hundred year war when the scornful firelord Sozin the Terrible conquered Yu Dao 37 years before the genocide of the air nomads, a crime orchestrated by Sozin himself. Roku confronted Sozin after learning of the colonies in the firenation causing the colonies to be retracted for some time until after Roku's death on Crescent Island some 25 years later." As the class continues to walk through the glass display cases showing Roku's old clothing, hair piece and other items from his time.

"The next after Avatar Roku was the Last Airbender, Avatar Aang. Born the moment that Roku perished on Crescent Island, Aang was born in the western air temple and grew quickly into an airbending prodigy and gained his master's tattoos at the age of 12 years old. However due to the looming war, the Air nomad gurus and elders opted to inform him of his Avatar status 4 years too early, normally an avatar is informed on their 16th birthday. The thought and fear of this new status lead him to panic and disappear one night, before the arrival of the Sozin's comet that same year. After freezing himself in ice due to falling into the water during the storm, a full century would pass for the outside world. Upon being released by his later wife Katara and her brother, the soon to be Southern Watertribe chief Sokka, Aang set out to master the elements and defeat firelord Ozai ending the 100 years war."

"After Aang's death at the age of 166, Avatar Korra was born in the southern water tribe. Her skills in bending manifested near her infancy with her displaying these techniques to the members of the White Lotus at the mere age of four years old." Izuku and Katsuki gaze at all the old pieces of technology, ancient radios, telephones and rudimentary cars on display. "During her span as Avatar, massive revolts between non benders and benders occurred due to the oppression the Nonbenders faced due to their lack of power. A terrorist organization arose in Republic city known as the Equalists who assaulted benders and took away their bending thanks to a specialized masquerading blood bender known as Tarlok, or you may know as Amon. After ousting him as a fraud to his regime Korra would later go on to battle the Red Lotus, a splinter anarchist organization of benders that arose after the Harmonic Convergence event. However, contrary to popular belief, the events with the "Dark Avatar" never occurred as Korra had falsified these memories when she was poisoned by mercury by the red lotus."

"Tragically, Avatar Korra was assassinated by a cult-like sect of Equalists at the age of 33 leading to the birth of Avatar Genji in the Shi Wong Desert as a sand bender. The earth kingdom mystics have had trouble in the past locating different avatars of their kingdom and much like Avatar Kyoshi, Avatar Genji would not be discover what he was until he was nearly 20 years old, when he was attacked by vulture wasps out in the desert and activated the avatar state for the first time. The bulk of Genji's early years as the Avatar was dedicated to trying to discover who assassinated his predecessor. After arresting the individuals responsible, Genji went on to become the first president of the now United Earth Kingdom States. In his term, he ushered in a new age of global cooperation and peace, however it wasn't without it's challenges. Near his 50th birthday the first quirk user was born. The century following the wars and conflicts between benders died off and were replaced with syndicates of quirk users and benders, though at the time quirks were referred to as Meta powers. Genji would go on to found the World Heroes Association in the twilight of his life before his death only four years ago. This means, that the current avatar is your age, and could even be in this very room." These words spoken by the tour guide cause some of the bending students in the class to audibly gasp at the notion before looking around at each other.

"You believe that, Izuku? One of these other extras could be the avatar. Heh it's probably you or me though." Katsuki questions as they're led to the main dining area for lunch. "I think it could be pretty cool, but I don't think you or any of the other kids in our class are the avatar." Katsuki surmises as he digs through his book bag for his bento box. "You wanna come over to my place today? My dad paid for the pro bending world series finale tonight. I figured I'd ask since it's your birthday and all."

"That sounds like a lot of fun! Oh! Maybe I can learn some stuff by watching the firebenders on TV." Izuku says excitedly before emulating some punches in the air. "Who do you think is gonna win tonight? I hope it's the Dragonriders!"

"They've won most of the ones this year but they're against the Skybison Brawlers who they lost to already." Katsuki recalls. "I don't care who wins, just as long as we get to see some firebending!" With lunch wrapping up, the kids are brought through the other exhibits detailing the events of the day of black sun and the return of the comet.

"Lastly, today we have actual footage of the great comet when it was caught inside Jupiter's orbit and ripped apart. The pieces were pulled into the gas giant leaving visible scars along the surface for several years." The tour guide then presses a button on the display behind her showing the class a video that a satellite took. The comet passes by Io before fracturing and getting pulled into the large planet. Several bright flashes along Jupiter's southern hemisphere occur when the pieces make impact. "The comet was on its most recent approach about 20 years ago when it broke apart in Jupiter's orbit.

Katsuki's House that evening.

"And that's a ring out! The Dragonriders are the champions!" With a roar of the live audience the four members of the pro bending team celebrate their victory. Holding up a massive trophy with the image of the previous Avatar Genji taking part in the games.

"That lasted longer than I thought it would." Katsuki's father says before standing and stretching from his spot. "You two wanna see if there's anything else on? They're just gonna do the awards speeches and then throw their coach into the water."

"Can you rewind it a little bit? Izuku's doctor said he's gonna be a firebender so I thought it'd be a good idea for him to watch some of their moves." Katsuki asks, prompting his dad to rewind it back to the beginning of the match.

"While watching and having a visual reference is good and all, I think he should try to see if he could bend it the way I learned. Here I'll be right back." Marasu excuses himself, leaving the two to continue watching the bout. "I didn't know your dad was a firebender." Izuku says, turning his attention away from the tv to talk to his friend.

"He is but he doesn't use it very much. The most I've ever seen him do is use it to torch the weeds that grow in the garden, burn those really big wasp nests, and light the grill." Katsuki responds with a shrug before his father walks back into the room holding a candle. With a snap of his fingers he creates a small flame above his thumb and index before lighting the wick. He then places the candle in the fireplace before motioning for Izuku to stand up. "My dad showed me how to do this when I was your age, stand in front of the candle, take a solid stance and throw a punch."

"Uhh... how do you punch?" The older man stared blankly at his godson before then trying to explain how to do so. "Ok, ball up your hand and make a fist. Make sure your thumb is tucked under your index and middle fingers, not inside your fist." Izuku copies Marasu, making a fist but merely staring at it waiting for him to continue. "Now throw your arm forwards like this." Marasu demonstrates, stepping to the side and throwing a solid inward punch with his right hand. Out of his knuckles a stream of fire is sent into the stone fireplace near the candle but controlled enough to not melt it. "Your turn."

"Just push my arm like that?" Izuku questions prompting Marasu to nod his head yes. "Throw the punch and if the candle sprays fire backwards or you create your own then you're a firebender." Taking a nervous breath, Izuku turns to face the small flame on the candle before copying Marasu's stance. Thrusting his small fist towards the candle he's surprised when it reacts, the candle puffs up creating a flame five times its original size before going back down to the small flame again. Wanting to replicate this, Izuku tries this with his other hand and quickly throws a punch even harder than his first one. This next punch manifests flames from his hand, a while small, a puff of bright orangish yellow fire spews from his hand and melts the candle in the fireplace.

"Woah." Katsuki says feeling the heat of the fire from Izuku's bending. "That was awesome!" he cheers, "That means you're a firebender like me! Since we're both firebenders and I have my exploding thing, we're going to be unstoppable when we become heroes!" Katsuki declares setting punching around the air creating puffs of fire, however said fire from his blasts is siphoned away by Marasu before being dissipated.

"Katsuki, what did I say about bending in the house?" Marasu questions looking sternly at his son. "Sorry dad." Katsuki replies, tuning down his excitement before his father speaks again. "Not inside the house, you'll catch the curtains or carpet on fire again. Let's take this outside before your mother gets home and freaks out that you and Izuku are firebending in the house. Agni knows she won't just have a cowpig, she'll have the whole farm if she saw that." All three of them shudder at the thought before Katsuki leads Izuku and Marasu to the backyard.

A couple hours later, Inko and Mitsuki arrive at the Bakugou household after their evening attending a PTA meeting with their sons' school. As they get to the front door, Mitsuki hears the tell-tale sign of firebending accented by flashes or orange red light. Getting inside, she sets her purse aside and the take out she and Inko had picked up on the counter before leading herself and Inko to the backdoor. What they see when they get to the glass nearly floors them, Marasu is seated on a lawn chair drinking a beer watching Katsuki and Deku run around playing some sort of game. Izuku is spraying fire out of his hands and Katsuki is firing his combustion beam at a potted plant vaporizing it. To say Inko was surprised is an understatement, she is standing behind Mitsuki wide eyed and flabbergasted.

"MARASU!!!" Mitsuki yells, getting the attention of all three of them. "WHY ARE YOU LETTING THEM SET MY YARD ON FIRE!!!" Mitsuki roars, prompting the two younger boys to stop dead in their tracks.

"The yard isn't on fire, I've been keeping Izuku's flames in check with my own bending... same can't be said for the hydrangeas though, Katsuki blew that up before I had a chance to stop him." The easygoing brown haired father responds before taking a sip of his beer. "Besides, they're kids, let them have free reign of their powers and learn how to use them. The grass and flowers will always grow back. You remember when Katsuki manifested his combustion bending? He nearly incinerated the bush over there and it looks completely fine now."

"Ugh, Katsuki, Izuku. Please stop before you set something else on fire. You two can train with your bending and quirk when we go to the training park this weekend ok?" Mitsuki asks, causing the two boys to nod in tandem with each other. "It's a good thing we bought that other fire extinguisher, you'll probably need two or three more though." Mitsuki says to Inko, prompting the green haired mother to let out a long sigh. He just had to be a firebender didn't he, he hasn't even set anything on fire by accident yet, but even now Inko knew that her son's bending abilities will end up burning her pocket book just as much as their apartment.
