The Master and Apprentice

The videos that the students took of Izuku using airbending went viral overnight, much like Katsuki had predicted Izuku's status as the avatar would make him more famous than All Might himself. Across every news station the world is reading headlines along the same title of "The Avatar revealed. The Avatar of Fire, Izuku Midoriya." Izuku himself didn't know how to feel about the publicity he was receiving. He hadn't been one to crave the limelight like Katsuki or Kaminari for that matter, though it didn't stop his own account on The Crucible (the Firenation's version of Instagram) from blowing up to tens of thousands of followers once they discovered he was the real deal. Even on his way to school with his friends people were hounding him for autographs, or just to talk with him. Despite the fact that he had only known he was the avatar for less than a day at this point. He'd definitely need to get used to this.

After getting out of their math class, Izuku slumps on the table with an exasperated sigh. The entire morning dozens of the students were hounding him with questions: "What is it like being the avatar?" "Is Avatar Korra hot?" "Have you talked with any of your past lives?" "What's it like bending water or earth?" He was exhausted from all the questions, what makes matters worse, or better in Kaminari's opinion, is that he had been hit on by at least a dozen girls after they learned that he is the avatar. He even had a marriage proposal from one of the third year girls, the leader of the Kuai Ball team (Kuai Ball being similar to Volleyball.) a beautiful and filled out black haired and ember eyed woman by the name of Kayako Hyodou. The entire time she spoke to him, Momo was exuding all the murderous intent of Azula and then some as the fire sconces that dot the walls turned blue as Momo grumbled about the 18 year old hitting on Izuku. Seeing the murderous intent from the firenation princess, the Kuai Ball captain left before Izuku could answer her love confession, despite the fact that he literally had never seen her until the exact second she approached him.

"I'm exhausted." Izuku complains as he rests his forehead on the table just beside his bowl of fried rice and roast duck. "I couldn't even get time to go to the restroom without someone trying to talk to me. Every class someone passes me a note with a question or just a girl saying that she's in love with me for being the avatar."

"There is a way to alleviate one of those problems." Kaminari responds, immediately Setsuna and Momo roll their eyes knowing exactly where the class pervert is going with this.

"I'm all ears so go ahead and give me any suggestions." Izuku says before sitting up so he can start picking at his food.

"Just get a girlfriend." Izuku stares at with a blank, unamused expression on his face. "What?"

"You're an idiot. Everyone who confessed 'feelings' to me today knows that I'm the avatar. They don't like who I am, they like what I am." Izuku responds, haphazardly picking up a piece of duck before sticking it in his mouth.

"Most of those extras probably know how powerful the bloodlines from avatars have been. They probably think that if they get into your pants any brats you have will probably be stronger firebenders than the entire royal family." Katsuki gestures with his fork slightly, sending some rice flying about as he does so.

"You're getting food everywhere Bakugou." Momo says as she brushes some of the flung bits of rice off of herself and off the table. "Kaminari may be right in the suggestion that if you were to have a relationship with someone you don't have to worry about too many of our classmates confessing to you."

"Figures you'd be one to suggest this Yaomomo, the princess and the avatar has a nice ring to it doesn't it?" Setsuna teases, Momo's face turns red at this statement.

"Why wouldn't I suggest it, it is the most practical solution to our friend's problem and it will keep most of the girls out of his hair and allow him to better focus on his training to learn Airbending." Momo says, trying to save face by hiding her slight blush behind her cup of tea.

"Everyone who said they had feelings for me today all did it because I'm the avatar. At first I was excited about being the avatar but I can't even turn on my phone without it crashing from all the private messages from the people that swarmed my Crucible account." He laments, "Besides, who would I even ask that isn't just wanting to date me because I'm the avatar."

"Deku?" Katsuki says, nudging Izuku's shoulder as the new found avatar slumps his head onto the table with a thud. "For as smart as you are, you're also an idiot." Izuku lifts his head up to just give Katsuki the stink eye. "How are you so fucking oblivious?" Katsuki asks, this causes Izuku to puff fire through his mouth, setting the blonde's chopsticks aflame. "Dude what the fuck I'm trying to help you." Katsuki says before extinguishing his flaming chopsticks. He grabs Deku by the head and forces him to look at Momo seated across from them.

"I still don't get it." Izuku says, shaking himself free of Katsuki's grip.

"He's saying you should ask Momo, jeez you haven't even started learning the elements and you're already as dense as lead." Shouto finally explains what Izuku has been oblivious to.

"D-date the p-princess?" Izuku stammers before looking over to Momo who smiles slightly when he says this. "D-don't I need permission from t-the royal family first?" He asks.

"The moment they learn that you're the avatar, my cousin Firelord Kenshi will arrange for us to be married." Izuku blushes harder when she says this, while he has a massive crush on her, the nonchalant manner she speaks in regarding marriage does catch him a bit off guard. "I will only ask this once, I understand if you think I'm only saying this because of the news you're the avatar but that isn't the case. I'm not shallow like the floozies that attend this school."

"Heyyy." Setsuna protests, realizing that Momo included her in that statement.

"Not you Tsuna, You and Kamato are my friends and I do not count you in that statement." Momo clarifies. "Izuku, would you like to go on a date with me this weekend? If this Saturday doesn't work then we can set up a time that wi-"

"Yes." Izuku interrupts her, Momo stops mid sentence and blinks twice not expecting the fast response from the new avatar.

"O-oh, I didn't think you'd say yes so quickly." She responds. "How does Saturday at 7pm sound? We'll get dinner and go to a movie."

"W-works for m-me." he stammers, Momo giggles to herself hearing the timid response.

"Wonderful, I'll have my driver come pick you up." She says, clasping her hands together and giving Izuku a closed eyed smile.

"Once again, real smooth Deku." Shouto says, offering Izuku his fist for a fist bump. However before Izuku can reciprocate this, their lunch is interrupted by Master Gedun.

"Ah, there you are, Young Avatar." The older man greets, causing all six students to immediately stand from their chairs and bow to the airbending master. "There's no need for that young ones, I merely wished to see how you're acclimating to the new title as the avatar and to introduce my apprentice." Gedun says as he motions to his side.

Walking up to the grand master is a teenage boy around the same age as Deku and his friends. He wore the same orange and yellow colors of an air nomad however his clothes were different from the traditional robes that Gedun wears. A blue arrow over the shaved head of the taller man is a clear indication that he too is an airbending master, his clothes are modern compared to his master. Despite the heat of the firenation, the airbending apprentice is wearing an orange sweater over a yellow collared shirt, the collar of which pokes out the top of the sweater neck. His pants are simple burlap colored khakis, while his eyes look serious. The wide grin on the young airbenders face gives off the friendly carefree attitude that their culture is known for.

"So, you're the new avatar right?" The teen begins as he invites himself to sit at the head of the table of firebenders. "I'm Inasa Yaorashi, it's a pleasure to meet you, Avatar Izuku." Inasa introduces himself, extending a hand to shake to which Izuku reciprocates the gesture.

"Inasa is my apprentice and due to his prodigal level skills will be assisting in your training with airbending. Now that introductions are out of the way, how are you acclimating to your new title?" Gedun asks, the airbending grandmaster resting his posture on the wooden cane he carries.

"It's been hectic to be perfectly honest." Izuku responds with a brief sigh, "I can't even get ten seconds by myself without someone hounding me with questions. It's given me a bit of a headache."

"I'm sure you'll get used to it, all the publicity from the new status as the avatar is going to die down in the next few weeks so it shouldn't be a problem for too long." Inasa says, attempting to reassure Izuku. "We can go train to take your mind off of it, that's the whole reason my master and I are here."

"I can finish my lunch first right?" Izuku asks, still showing the barely touched bowl of duck and rice.

"Of course, I'm going to go see if the restaurant has any custard tart desserts. I've been meaning to indulge my sweet tooth for a while. We're going to be exercising soon so it's the perfect opportunity to do so." Inasa exclaims before getting up and wandering off towards the cafeteria restaurant.

"So, what are the two of you gonna teach Deku today?" Bakugou asks, getting the airbending master's attention. "You meditated yesterday and found out he's the avatar so what's the first thing on the whole training regiment you have."

"Today we're just going to get the air to move." Master Gedun begins. " Airbending is as much a martial art as Firebending is, however the movements, while similar in some ways, are vastly different in many others. He needs to get used to allowing the air to move on its own rather than trying to control and contain it. With fire, you can choose to let it grow, feeding it energy and directing its path, even choking it out by taking away its fuel source. With air, the air has to come back to the space where you moved the air from, it can't be controlled as harshly as fire is needed to be but rather guided along where you wish it to go. It embodies freedom and if you stifle that freedom then it will not respond to you." Izuku, predictably, has taken out one of his many notebooks from over the years to begin jotting down what Gedun is saying. This book is different from the ones he wrote on heroes and other benders, it is one he picked up the previous night meant only for notes regarding airbending.

"If I was the avatar, I'd use this knowledge to just blow smoke up your ass when you screw up Bakugou." Todoroki says with a smirk earning a death glare from the blonde combustion bender.

"Go fuck yourself, I'm perfect damnit." Gedun laughs hearing the response from Katsuki before nodding to Izuku and walking away to go find his apprentice.

"Fuck me yourself coward." Shouto's immediate come back causes Setsuna to choke on her water.

"Alright, you two knock it off before you get Those shippers into this story." Momo reprimands, causing Katsuki to grunt before turning away from Todoroki.

"I just used his own card against him." Todoroki responds with a victorious smirk on his face.

After lunch, Izuku parts with his friends and heads to his new fifth period training class with Mrs Bakugou and the grandmaster. Today, thankfully for him, Madam Blast is on a patrol near Sapporo in the far north and won't be present for her classes at the academy. This means that Izuku gets to train only with the two airbenders. As he gets to the gym, for the first time today he feels excited to go to a new class. Despite the fact that his entire walk to the gym he was hounded by the students continuing the onslaught of questions that he had to suffer through this morning. Once arriving, he's greeted by Inasa again outside of the gym, who ushers away the excited firebenders allowing for the avatar and the airbender to head inside. In preparation for the training session today, Inasa had gotten changed into a more traditional set of airbending robes fitted with a red cape around his back. Izuku notes that there's ridges along the folds of his cape as well as what look like loops near where his hands are.

"Right on time, I hope that the others didn't bother you too much on the way over." Gedun says as he sits upright on a rotating sphere of air. The sphere of air is only visible due to the sand and ash that has been collected and tossed about by the rotating air currents. "Would you like to train outside or in here?"

"We'll get interrupted if we train outside," Izuku responds.

"Sounds good to me, besides we don't need people laughing when you fall today." Inasa says in a bit of a cheeky manner as the two airbenders lead Izuku into the gym proper. Getting to the training area, instead of the normal flat expanse of the gym, dozens of lifted wooden posts sit in the center of the room. Across from them are dozens of large flat gates sit at the far side of the gym, each of them emboldened with the emblem of the air nomads in the center.

"Much like Madam Blast had said yesterday, one of the fundamentals of airbending is agility to be as weightless as the wind itself. Your spirit yearns to float with the air and the spirit itself is what allows us to flow with it." Gedun explains before dropping his cane and jumping almost ten meters into the air before landing gracefully on one of the large pillars. "Today we will be doing just that, we will begin with meditation and balance. I want you to climb up here and choose a post to stand on. Then you will meditate while maintaining your balance."

"Doesn't seem that hard does it?" Inasa asks as Izuku begins climbing up the pillars, luckily for him there are hand holds for the young avatar to use as he climbs up. "The hard part is that I'll be airbending at you, calm at first but progressively harder."

"Where's the fun in telling him the surprise?" Gedun asks in a joking manner as Izuku manages to get on top of the post. "Now, copy my posture and focus on the air around you. Your breathing and focus should allow you to stay balanced as the wind flows around you. Inasa you may begin when ready."

Izuku stands with both feet planted on the small post, the post barely being big enough for him to stand on the platforms of his feet with his heels hanging off the side of it. He copies Gedun, by folding his left hand into his right before closing his eyes. With a curt nod to Gedun, Inasa flows his arms slowly around his head and then follows through the motion and gestures with an open hand towards the avatar and master. The air around them picks up as Inasa begins these movements, Izuku's muscles tense around his legs feeling the wind against him. He focuses on clearing his mind and takes longer deeper breaths trying to find the same headspace he was in yesterday. He focuses on his inner fire, keeping himself warm against the cooler air that is progressively getting faster around him. He doesn't falter however despite the increasing wind speeds courtesy of Inasa, Izuku's breathing and own control begins to move the air around him creating a small cone around his body preventing the more aggressive winds from interrupting him.

"Good, now with that mentality, begin jumping between the posts, Inasa and I will continue airbending around you." the grandmaster says before jumping off the pillar and floating down towards the ground. He takes a place opposite of his student on the other side of the field of raised posts. The airbending grandmaster begins to channel more aggressive wind currents towards Izuku. "Begin." He instructs.

With wind nearing Gail forces, Izuku opens his eyes and focuses on just getting from post to post. He takes long controlled breaths as he flexes the muscles in his legs before jumping off the post he's standing on. He manages to land on a single foot on the next post a few feet away, the air around him threatening to push him off of the post but he manages to hold firm against the air. Within seconds, he manages to get a feel for the air moving around him as he jumps to the next post and then the next. Gedun watches in slight amazement seeing just how quickly the avatar is learning and getting through this exercise. As Izuku gets to the last post on the far side from where he started, Gedun motions for Inasa to stop before walking towards the side where Izuku is.

"I've heard stories of just how quickly the avatar can grasp and learn a new element. My own ancestor Avatar Aang had learned waterbending within moments of attempting it for the first time." Gedun says, "Come down from there, we're going to begin the next lesson. The spinning gates."
