Chapter 7: Deerling
"Alright Minccino, let's get to training!" Hilda chirped, her Pokémon climbing up onto her shoulder.
"Cinno!" Minccino cried, pumping one of her tiny fists into the air.
As Hilda and Minccino wandered through Route 8 looking for trainers to battle, Hilda began to hear a voice. Curiously, she walked in the direction of the voice, who was seemingly talking to themselves, since she couldn't pick up another voice. Finally, she found the owner of the voice, and she was not happy about it.
It was N, but he wasn't alone as Hilda had thought. There was a Deerling stuck in a trap normally used to capture Pokémon like Beartic. The trap's jaws were clamped down on the Pokémon's back leg, and N was trying to pry it open.
"That's not gonna work." Hilda said, sneaking up behind N.
The Deerling curled itself into a ball to make it look smaller. N turned at the sound of Hilda's voice and raised an eyebrow.
"Well what would you suggest?" N asked, still trying to pull open the trap.
"Scoot over." Hilda commanded, taking a seat on the ground next to N.
Deerling scooted away from Hilda, keeping its leg far from her.
"I'm not gonna hurt you," Hilda said softly, "Promise. I just want to help."
Minccino nodded her head and smiled at the small grass type. Deerling hesitantly moved its trapped leg towards Hilda, wincing from the pain.
Hilda carefully examined the trap, finding a keyhole. An idea coming to mind, Hilda rummaged through her bag until she found a bobby pin. Hilda put the bobby pin into the keyhole, moving it around until the jaws finally released from the Deerling's leg.
The Deerling smiled and tried to get up. When it tried to stand up, it nearly fell, causing Hilda and N to ready their hands to catch it.
"Woah there, kiddo," Hilda said nervously, "You're not going anywhere just yet."
Deerling stood on only three of its legs and looked at Hilda curiously. Hilda felt N's eyes on her as she dug through her bag for a potion.
"This may sting a little, but you'll need to stay still." Hilda told the deer Pokémon. Hilda gently took the Pokémon's injured leg and sprayed the wound with the potion. Deerling winced with pain, but didn't move as Hilda had instructed.
The wound healed slightly, but it was still deep enough to need further attention.
"We should probably take it to a Pokémon Center." Hilda said.
"How come?" N asked, "Can we not help it now?"
Hilda picked up the Deerling and held it in her arms, "Sure, but Nurse Joy could probably do a better job in half the time."
Hilda stood up, her Minccino jumping from her shoulder to her hat. N stood up with her.
"So you are going to bring it into the city?" N asked, "Is it going to be safe there?"
Hilda nodded as she began walking the path back to Driftveil City, "Well it will be now that Clay drove out Team Plasma..." She said, raising an eyebrow at the green haired boy.
N visibly flinched, "Do you know who he 'drove out'?" He asked with air quotes.
Hilda shrugged, "I don't remember. Zin something or other."
Minccino said something to N. N nodded and reached to pet Minccino, "Ah him. He can be a bit brash at times. He's also horrible at hide n' seek." he chuckled.
Minccino purred at N's touch, even jumping into his arms.
"Traitor..." Hilda said teasingly. Minccino stuck her tongue out at her trainer.
"So...What do you need with Seven complete idiots anyway?"
A smile rugged at N's lips, "The sages?"
"Yeah!" Hilda confirmed.
"You think they are idiots?"
"Well they seem to think that hiding in a cold storage with no jackets is a good idea...And they're always talking about you!"
"Oh?"
"It's 'our king' this and 'our king that,'" Hilda complained as the two trainers entered Driftveil City, "They practically worship the ground you walk on."
N chuckled, "Well I am their king."
Hilda scoffed, "I guess that makes sense."
The doors of the Pokémon Center slid open as the two trainers entered. Hilda ran to the counter and told Nurse Joy the story of Deerling.
"I'll do everything I can!" Nurse Joy promised, taking Deerling away to the back.
"Where did she take it?" N asked, Minccino still nestled in his embrace.
"Into the back. It's where she does all that healing stuff," Hilda said, "I swear she's got some magic powers or something."
"Oh."
Hilda looked down at Minccino, "C'mon Miss Missy," she said, "We gotta get back to training."
Minccino made a sour face and snuggled into N's arms. N chuckled.
"What?" Hilda asked.
"'We've been training all day'," N translated, "'Can't we stop for a bit? Plus, this guy is really warm'."
Hilda crossed her arms.
"Oh come on, Hilda." N pushed, "It's lunchtime."
"Are you suggesting that you and I get lunch?" Hilda asked, raising an eyebrow, "Together?"
"With Minccino." N added.
Minccino made Lillipup eyes at Hilda.
Hilda's resolve crumbled, "Okay...but we stay here and eat. I don't wanna leave Deerling all alone."
N smiled, "You have yourself a deal."
