s e v e n | answers and betrayal

"What do you want me to do here?" A hushed voice reached Chipmunk's ears as the city lights blinded his eyes.
Turning his back at her, he took a deep breath as he glanced at the grey, white and black giants that stood in front of him. The big figures were staring at him as high pitched laughers echoed in his ears. Countless colorful stars spread among the wave of buildings as they winked cheerfully at him with a hint of laughter.
He was alone in the dark. No one wanted him. The world was too big for him to understand.
The sound of the crowd seemed to be far away. He was separated from the rest of the world. He would never be a part of it. The sound has already abandoned him and joined with the lights, leaving him behind. A nest of little birds was resting on the tall oak tree nearby, cuddling next to one another. How he wished there would be someone for him to lean on, yet he had none.
He heard pawsteps of the cat he wanted to meet the most. The cream Siamese with black paws who was always by his side. He would always miss the tiny shadow that fell on the concrete ground next to his. Since when did things get to keep the same? The flame of hope that held him strong was pulled out. He just wanted answers.
"What do you want?" Her voice echoed silently in the dark. The brown tabby shivered, not because of the cold of the calming breeze, because of the emptiness in her voice.
Trying to keep his voice steady, he answered, "Answers."
"Of what?" He could see the city light reflected from the rainbow jewellery that embedded on her black collar, all the memories that spun in his head made him dizzy.
Which was real? Which was not?
"Your betrayal." Chipmunk faced his back at her as he took a deep breath. His chest ached as his eyes stared at the swallow cutting through the air, flitting and skimming without stress. He wanted to fly, fly like a bird with a pair of wings. He could blend into the darkness or be a part of it. He could leave all the stress behind. But his heart was locked. He could not breathe. Reality weighted like a rock.
His ears twitched at the slightest sound as the she-cat mewed with a shaky voice, "That was not betrayal."
Rage quickened his blood as he trembled with rage. His voice broke through the silent night as he shouted, "What is it then? A joke?"
One of the little birds on the nest nearby jumped at the sound as it awoke from its sweet dream, tweeting helplessly. The she-cat shivered with fear as the brown tabby tom turned and faced her. His yellow eyes were filled with tiredness as they cut through the tension that filled the atmosphere. May's mouth moved quickly as she tried to explain, "T-that is PeakClan's warriors code-"
Chipmunk's pelt shone under the pale city lights as anger overpowered him. He has never felt this before as if he was burning alive. The tongues of the fire licked him as he growled. He swallowed down his anger as sadness coated his throat. He choked, "W-what about me?"
May's voice was covered by the sound of the cheer from the crowd below. Standing on the balcony of an old building, Chipmunk tried to block the disturbing voices. Two-legs were laughing with bottles that could often be seen in their hands. As if they enjoyed watching this heat argument, laughing at his foolishness as his hope shattering into pieces. They were leaving him behind with a mess.
All of a sudden, he remembered.
"Come on, just let me go. I will play with you later, Chipmunkkit. I promise I will." She gently licked his head as his eyes fixed on his mother.
"You will come back, right?" He mumbled as he bit his mother's tail, not wanting her to do.
"Of course I will! I won't leave you and your sister here, will I?" She gave him one last pat before shaking him off her tail.
"I will be waiting for you with my mossball! I will surely win this time, just wait and see!" Chipmunkkit peeked out of the nursery and called after his mother.
This would be the first and last promise that she broke.
It was too late.
Suddenly, he was afraid to know the answer. He always knew that he was useless, he was weak. But it would hurt even more to hear that coming out one of his best friends' mouth. The pain was unbearable, as if a knife has cut through his throat. His heart was aching, he was sinking. The ocean of fear has swallowed him alive and he was struggling to breathe.
As the sound of the crowd died, he could hear a mumble, "C-Chipmunk, I am sorry, but I do not have another choice..."
Chipmunk's head turned and his eyes were glued on the pair of green eyes. Her eyes swam with tears as his brows snapped tightly together. He raised his eyebrow, studying her closely with his bright yellow eyes.
The world seemed to pause as their eyes met. Chipmunk could not stop the anger boiling inside him. The pair of eyes that showed when he was betrayed. He shot her a glance of anger as his voice broke through the now silent night, "You are lying!"
He turned his back at her as tears blinded his eyes. The lights were now mixed into a huge pot of white. His throat was burning. He could hear sniffles coming from his back. He wanted to go and offer a shoulder to lie on. He wanted to apologize. But he could not.
His fury sprang into life and it gripped him, trying to pull him apart. He has lost everything that he once had. All the happy memories could only be replayed. Warmness has slipped through his paws as it was trying to seek for another thing that was worth staying.
He was broken. Every cat has been treating him like a toy for entertainment. He has had enough. All it left in his body was emptiness.
Who was he?
The small shadow shivered. Her green eyes shone with fear as a whisper slipped out of her mouth, "There is something that you do not understand."
"Finally, I understand you are trying to betray me and leave me to rot, aren't you?" The low dangerous hiss was enough for May to hear. She stared at her paws nervously and responded, "Apart from that..."
"Yes, I know. Surf and Rise are going to leave me alone too, aren't they?" Rage churned inside him, knocking the wind out of him. The monsters inside him was roaring, fighting to break out of the cage in his heart.
He was foolish. He should have known that he was a toy. Everything was just a dream.
"No-"
Yes, he murmured to himself, another big news which turns out to be nothing at all. The cage was shaking and the monsters were free. His anger coiled in his stomach and hardened in his heart. They were struggling to break free as they took away his breath, roaring hungrily in the darkness.
He took a deep breath and his anger exploded, "Leave!"
The small figure flinched. She opened her mouth and tried to explain, "I-"
"Leave! And never appear in front of my eyes ever again!" He ordered. Gritting his teeth, he turned with misty eyes. He plastered a smile on his face as he threw her a dirty look.
The colour drained out of May's face as she disappeared into the darkness.
The monsters calmed and he struggled to breathe. Facing the world without hope, he admired the small lamp that stood lonely on the street, trying to share warmth with a cat like him. Moths danced under the lamp and the familiar smell of the garbage truck filled his nose. The smell that he always recognised and the way that he found home. Here was his home...?
Twitching his ears nervously, he could sense that something was wrong. The fur on his pelt stood up like needles. Panic flared in his eyes. Eyes widened, he studied the surroundings with fear.
The nest of little birds flying in their dreams, an empty balcony and the city lights that lit the sky in front of him. Nothing was wrong.
Nothing could be wrong.
He ordered himself to relax and enjoy the gift of peace. As the breeze touched his face, his throat tightened as terror sealed his throat. His tail twitched cautiously. Sounds.
Fresh terror reared up within him and he stopped his urge to run. His body went cold with dread. He suppressed a shiver when blood rang in his ears. Footsteps.
He picked up a similar scent and alarms immediately rang in his head unstoppably. Dread twisted in his stomach as his belly cramped. He felt like he might throw up, but it clearly was not the time for him to do so.
Run, he told himself, run!
With a loud sound that deafened Chipmunk's ears, the world spun into the endless darkness...
