Postscript
Welcome back to Generations. This is Fox, writing an inexplicable postscript in the middle of the night. Are you doing well? I hope so. I also hope that you enjoyed volume 1.5, even though it seems so sudden. In a way, that's because it is.
Originally, I never planned to have a volume 1.5, or any .5 volumes in this story. However, due to final exams coming up, I had to do major revision in order to boost my grades. Since I lose focus easily, I wanted to revise in a way that would both teach me the material and keep my attention.
I decided that a creative outlet to do my revision would be best, since watching videos, reading textbooks, or creating flash cards were boring and tedious to me. As such, I created a collection of stories that took place in GEN Academy that would teach or revise the syllabus, and published them as rough drafts in order to expand the world of Generations for an audience that cared.
In this case, the story revolved around science, since I wasn't doing as well in that subject. I needed to bring in a character that could teach and a character that could learn, while still linking it back to the main story. I didn't choose Takanori, the protagonist, as he didn't fulfil either role due to his average nature. So, I chose the characters Yukimura and Nora to take the spotlight, since one was good at academics, and the other was bad at academics, which is why they are prominent characters in this story.
What I didn't expect was for these rough drafts to do so well. Many people enjoyed it, and tuned in regularly as I posted them, learning alongside me and seeing these characters slowly grow and develop. One fan even dubbed the series "Dr Yukimura", in homage to the science-centric manga Dr Stone. I liked the name so much, it became it's official title, and the title of this volume.
Besides the educational aspect (which is all true! All of the information displayed in this volume is straight out of my revision guides, just restructured so I could remember it!) the stories allowed me to expand the world of GEN Academy and introduce students I've yet to use. Moving away from Takanori's perspective removed the restrictions of his character and gave me more freedom to explore different characters I normally wouldn't in the main storyline. It was refreshing to go wild without any hesitation.
However, disaster struck. Even though I had been preparing for months, due to various circumstances, the exams were cancelled and I was now going to get my grades based on the work I did at school. I wonder, could I submit these drafts to try and increase my science grade...?
All the hard work and effort I put into those drafts had gone to waste. All that time trying to revise science, gone. I tried to express this frustration through Yukimura, who failed to hit the mark when it came to his midterms, because in my own science mock exams, when I got my results, they weren't as good as I thought they'd be, despite my constant studying.
Now I had no idea what to do with these stories. I was using them for the sole purpose of revision, but now that it didn't matter, I was stuck. Should I just let them... sit there? Forget that they ever existed? Say it's non-canon? It felt like a waste if I did that though. There were many great ideas and introductions to important characters.
Then, it hit me.
I had created enough content to turn it into a volume, so I could compile all these chapters, polish them up, and recycle it into an impromptu volume 1.5! The very first .5 volume of Generations! That's right, this volume takes place between volume 1 and 2 (with the exception of chapter 9) and shows the missing battle of the students going into their first midterms!
Since I got this idea during April, and May was just around the corner, I decided to release this volume on the 1/5/20 (May 1st) to pay homage to it's volume number (1.5). I'm a genius, aren't I?
You fool! You idiot! You're not a genius! You put yourself through hell for this?! Why am I even working with you?!
—probably my editor somewhere as I send him the final drafts for publishing.
I had roughly two weeks to bring this all together, and it wasn't easy finishing writing and editing this volume within that limited timeframe. Being a mismanaged and lazy author, I barely managed to scrape together the final product just before the deadline. (I shouldn't have been so occupied by Vanguard ZERO teehee ☆) Editor-sama, please forgive me.
To make up for my lazy and reckless behaviour, I spent many long nights staying up until 4am to do extra editing during the final stretch. Sitting at my desk for such long periods of time has really hurt my lower back. It worries me what my health will be like in the future.
Since I never planned this, there was no announcement of it in volume 1, so if you did find and read this, I truly do thank you for reading. However, on a brighter note, I did like the way this volume turned out, so perhaps there's a chance for another .5 volume in the near future. I enjoyed writing these drafts, as it gave me plenty of ideas for characters and created a lot of fan favourites in the process. (My unscientific opinion.)
Of course, if I just repackaged all the original drafts without any new content, there'd be no reason to read this volume if you already read those. That's why I introduced new content (such as chapter 1, half of chapter 2, and chapter 9 in particular) so those readers could also enjoy new and exciting stories in this volume too.
As such, please note that chapter 9 is the only outlier in this volume timeline wise. Chapter 1 to 8 happen before volume 2, but chapter 9 happens after volume 2. It might even be closer to the start of volume 3... wait, wait, I shouldn't be getting ahead of myself. Who knows when volume 3 will come out?!
Now, that's enough backstory. I think volume 1.5 really does a good job at focusing on the characters illustrated on the frontispiece. (Once again, I thank my illustrator who works extremely hard to make these beautiful artworks— wait, the illustrator is me. You did a bad job on the art! Stop using so many references!)
Even though Yukimura is shown to be an angry bully in volume 1, volume 1.5 shows a more caring and willing side of him, especially when he interacts with his effeminate classmate, Nora. I think that potential for Yukimura to change surmises the spirit of E Class, as these failures must learn to grow up so they can climb the ranks, and persevere even if it feels like the whole world is against them.
Nora's makeover was one of my favourite parts in the volume. It allowed me to give him a beautiful new design that better fit the character, according to the readers (I don't have the data to back this claim up). Now, while Mitsuba may have blown off studying, he did get his shining moment, where he requests to overturn his disqualification by using points. It must be an interesting tactic, right? Not to mention, his plan to peep on the girls would've worked if it wasn't for that damn Takanori!! How dare he ruin their youthful escapades—
I've had to edit this part out in the morning as during my drunken night rage, I said many things that were wrong and incriminating of me. Do not go peep on girls, as it's illegal and a crime. As a disclaimer, I do not support this and the contents expressed in that chapter are figments of imagination that do not relate to real life events. I was kind enough to keep one line from that rant. Please don't arrest me.
(The opinions and impressions regarding the swimming pool chapter are up to the editorial staff!)
I still agree with this, and I also agree that Mitsuba has gotten lots of development in this volume. Unlike his friends, it seems like he's getting worse. (Like me!)
Now, let's not forget the main stars of the show. You can definitely tell Yukimura is slowly maturing. Even if he's still moody or threatening, he's becoming less of a failure to some degree. Nora too has undergone a radical change, as his relationships with his classmates improve, especially with that gyaru, Fujimura. Will a romance blossom from their unexpected friendship? Who knows.
Okay, I should move on, before this postscript becomes longer than last volume's. I hoped that I could've keep this short, but alas, I failed once again, like the incompetent author I am. That's why, I'd like to give my thanks to the people who supported me through this marathon where I sprained my ankle near the end (metaphor).
Firstly, I owe a huge massive gratitude to my famous dual-wielding Assistant-kun and Editor-sama, KRX350!
I'm sorry! Please forgive me! I have sinned! I said I could do it on time, but I couldn't! I'm sorry for stressing you! I will repent and think over my reckless actions! I am in your care forever! Please punish me thoroughly so I can correct all my mistakes! Talk down to me like I'm a princess, I deserve all of it! I owe my life to you, Editor-sama!
He has saved me many times from doing something stupid, and still works with me despite my flaws, such as ignorance, and clumsiness. Without him, you wouldn't have this volume.
As usual, please continue working hard for me, even if I overwork you to the brink of death. Together, we'll get through this...
Then, there's the self-proclaimed #1 stan of Yukimura and Kouji, kaiishida. This is the beautiful man who named the volume Dr Yukimura. Such a brilliant title.
Your support through even the rough drafts of Dr Yukimura has given me reason to create this volume 1.5. Thank you for reading my stories as usual.
Let's not forget Little_Cute_Cookie, who has repeatedly helped me when it came to designing my frontispiece and cover. Your eye for graphics are superb!
My illustrator, myself, for illustrating a troublesome series where only men show up. However, I have a grudge against you for this volume. When I received the illustrations, I have very pleased with Dr Yukimura and Nora's redesign, but it shocked me knowing that you were only able to draw three new arts?!
Impossible! I'm not paying you to lie around and sit on your ass! (Still hasn't realised he's talking about himself.) You should've at least been able to draw a new illustration for Mitsuba as well, you incompetent fool! (Still hasn't realised he's talking about himself.) That's why, I hope in the future, you can put your dwindling effort into drawing more beautiful girls for the frontispiece. (Still hasn't realised he's talking about himself.)
As a request, using this grudge as leverage, from now on too, please coolly continue to draw uncouth, old man-like male characters (scummy face). I humbly request such a "Cardfight!! Vanguard: Generations full of men" along with volume 2's eventual release.
And of course, saving the best for last, I want to thank you, the reader. For once again somehow struggling your way through nine chapters (and this unbelievably chatty postscript!) of my horrible work. I hope I didn't bore you to tears, or even worse, death. (Because that's where I'm headed to after Editor-sama is done chewing me out! A scalpel of anger is pointed at me!)
This section is dedicated to the original owners of characters that debuted this volume. Thanks to you, GEN Academy is a little richer with these wonderful students.
AndytheSPECIAL1 - Kai Rikuto, Mato Takara
Little_Cute_Cookie - Sanou Nozomi
KRX350 - Shinomiya Mai
Now, please look forward to volume 2! For my bold April fools prank, I pretended to release volume 2 early, when in reality, it was nothing more than a teaser. Of course, I have the volume slated for an early 2021 release, but if I work hard enough, then maybe I can get it out by the end of 2020...
No, no! You can't make statements like that! You won't be able fulfil your promises or deadlines if you say these things!
I am a troublesome, unpredictable author. I aim to have a 3 month release schedule, I swear.
Now, volume 2 will be exploring what happened in that last week of May, as it centres around a war between E Class and D Class! Takanori will have a difficult time defeating Zyriot, the leader of D Class. Already, in this volume, you can see how indignant the D Class students are towards the E Class students, such as when Satou, Shigeru and Terasaka teamed up to verbally abuse Yukimura, Sakigamiya and Nora for visiting their class.
Against those tough enemies, will they succeed?!
You'll just have to pick up the next volume to find out. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my incompetent heart for reading. I'll continue trying to become a better person next time we meet. Maybe Editor-sama won't hate me anymore...
On a side note, it was hard to pick the SS for this volume. I hope you enjoy those additions too. One even involves the Headmaster?!
That's all, Fox out!
