Chapter 2
I made my way home after stopping by the client and dropping off the diamond and getting my reward. "Coco!" I called. A jingling bell drew my attention to the kitchen where my large fluffy brown cat came running in. "There's my girl." I cooed. She purred and rubbed against my face as I carried her to my room. "Your getting fat cat." I mocked at her. She huffed, like she was tired of hearing the same joke. She was a Maine coon so she was supposed to be a huge cat.
I laid her on my bed before changing into a large night shirt and some shorts. I plopped down on the bed, causing Coco to jump up. She chattered at me before curling up next to me. I put an arm over her and quickly fell asleep.
I hadn't been asleep for long when I was woken up by a distressed Coco. "Coco Wha-" I choked and coughed, smoke filling the room. I jumped to my feet and grabbed Coco, running for the door. I grabbed the handle and hissed, pulling it back. 'The fires downstairs. Crap!' The floor was getting hot and my feet felt like they were on fire. I coughed hard and hurried to the window. I threw it open and I could already see a crowd forming below, people screaming and shouting.
The flames were licking out of the windows of the bookstore below and I had to back away from the heat. "Sky!" I heard dual voices shout. I looked out and saw my brothers pushing past the people. "Sky you gotta jump!" Pheo shouted. "I swear to god Pheo if you drop me!" I shouted. "Wouldn't dream of it!" he grinned. I grabbed a blanket and wrapped Coco up in it to keep her safe. I held her close and lept from the window. He stumbled back as he caught me and set me down while I coughed.
I looked up at my brothers and that's when I saw him. In the crowd of faces, I saw the silver eyes and green hair from earlier. He still wore his stealth suit and kept his face hidden. I glared at him and Slate turned to see him. "Go get him!" I said as the green haired man turned and bolted. Slate followed him as fire engines drove up. I held a trembling Coco as they fought the fire. I could finally breath easy and there were more people gathering.
"Skylark!" I looked up to see my mom and dad. "Hey mom, dad. Im fine honest." I said as my mother knelt in front of me and checked me over. My dad ruffled my hair and grunted, I knew that was his way of showing he cared though.
Slate came back and I stood. "Where did he go?" He sighed. "He got on a motorcycle and took of." I groaned. "First the museum and now this!" My mom frowned at me and I could already see her gears turning. "What do you mean first the museum?" I explained what happened at the museum. She put a hand to her chin and thought. "We will take care of it in the morning Levy. Let's just take her home so she can sleep." My dad said. I knew he was worried because he rarely called mom by her name. He always called her a cute nickname, shrimp.
She nodded and put an arm around me. The five of us headed for our parents house. Pheo and Slate had there own house in town, but I guess they wanted to make sure I was safe. I went up to my old room and flopped on my old bed. Coco was still unhappy but she curled up beside me.
When I woke up it was still early. I got up and sighed, no clothes. I walked down stairs to find my dad reading the paper. "Morning daddy." I yawned. He glanced up," How are you feeling?" "Pissed." He chuckled and shook his head. "Your mom laid some clothes out on our bed for you." I nodded and headed upstairs, luckily mom and I were the same size. I came down in her jeans and green tank top and went back to the kitchen.
"I'm heading out, maybe I can find out what happened." He frowned but nodded. "Just... Be careful ok?" He grumbled. I smiled softly and went to him, hugging him. He grumbled but wrapped an arm around me. "I will daddy. Promise." He nodded before shooing me out the door. The manor was my first stop.
"Mira!" I called as I headed for the bar. "Hey Skylark. How are you? I heard what happened." I huffed. "I'm pissed. Hey that diamond job, do you know if it was sent anywhere else?" She frowned as she thought. "No no it wasnt. Why?" "I'm trying to figure something out." I said as i headed back out the door.
My next stop was my ruined home. I stopped outside of the bookstore, meeting the owner outside. "Skylark! Please tell me you weren't inside when this happened." I smiled sweetly at the old man. "I was but my brothers got me out. Pleas let me know if you need any help alright?" He smiled. "Your such a sweet girl."
I smiled and headed for the door and carefully up the ruined stairs. The roof was caved in with water and the floor sagged. I carefully picked through the debris, trying to find anything salvageable or any hint as to what started the fire. I knew it was someone after me, who would attack a bookstore? I froze as I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
"Hello Shadow Girl."
