Liza's POV
April 11, 2017
"I'm gonna go get a soda!" I yell to David over the music blasting on the speakers. He nods and I walk through the crowd of sweaty, drunk, dancing people to the Heath's kitchen. I duck under the sign that says 'Happy Birthday Toddy!' and reach the assortment of drinks on the counter. I pick up a can of Coca-Cola and turn around to see Toddy in my way.
"Oh, hey Toddy! Happy birthday!" He leans in closer and I step back into the counter, smelling the alcohol in his breathe.
"Hi baby, you wanna dance?" he slurs, stepping closer.
"Uhm, I've got to get back to David..." My heartbeat quickens, not because I'm flattered (or interested, for that matter) but because of nerves.
"David doesnt have to know." Toddy smirks and I can tell he is clearly not himself. He leans in to kiss me and in shock, I stay there like a stone. The kiss has no feeling the way David's does, it's cold and numb. Just lips on my lips, nothing else. I stand there, wide-eyed, unsure of what to do. As he kisses me, I hear the dropping of a can. The tin clashing with the tile brings me back to my senses and I rip away to see David standing there, mouth open and a busted can of Sprite on the ground. I quickly search for something to say. Think, Liza, think!
"I-It's not what it looks like!" I spit out, as it's the first thing that comes to mind. That's the worst thing you could've said, idiot!
"Well it looks like is you're kissing another guy, and somewhere pretty public, may I add. If you wanted to cheat on me, couldn't you have found somewhere more private?" David bitterly points out.
I quickly think of how to explain the situation while Toddy annoyingly stands to the side, not paying attention at all and scrolling through his phone. "Babe, I swear! He kissed me! I didn't kiss him ba-"
"Save it Liza. Out of all the people, you actually cheated on me with one of my best friends?" he scoffs. "You know what? We're done." He turns on his heel and begins walking away, leaving me looking at his retreating figure.
"How about let's get back to where we left off?" he says grabbing my wrist and pulling me back from going after David.
"Seriously? Let go of me!" I pull my wrist out of his grasp and slap him across the face, leaving a red handprint. I go in the direction David went in and I find him in a corner...making out with a random red head. Tears sting in my eyes and I push past a sea of some other couples to be deposited to a bathroom. I shut the door and slide down the door with my back until I hit the ground. The dam holding back my tears slowly breaks and hot, wet tears begin sliding down my face.
My kiss was an accident, but he's doing it intentionally. If it was an accident why didn't you pull away? I ask myself. He had me trapped! You could've easily gotten out. Did you like it? No, of course I didnt! Did I?...NO Liza stop it! You love David! Does he love you? Yes, he does! Wasn't he just kissing a red head? I shake my head, clearing the arguing voices in my head, and wiping my tears.
I breathe in the Febreze scent of the bathroom, the breath slowly forming into a deep breath. Pulling myself off the ground, I peer into the rectangular mirror. My makeup is smudged, streaks of mascara running down my face. I can't just stay in here all night. I sigh, wishing I could do exactly that. I walk out of the bathroom not bothering to fix my makeup.
Walking down the hall that leads around the middle room filled with people and out to the backyard, I spot David. His tall figure is scrunched and sat in a lawn chair, his hat is in his lap, his hair ruffled, a tell-tale sign he has been pulling on it due to frustration, and his face in his hands. I turn my head to look over where the red head is. I see someone holding her hands and talking to her and I look at the backyard again. That wasn't David? I sprint, finally realizing the mistake I made, out to the backyard pushing and shoving people out of the way despite the yells to 'Watch it!'. David stands up before I have a chance to make it out of the swarm. Just before he steps back inside to leave through the front door, I reach him and grab his wrist.
He turns around, his eyes glazed with tears. "Liza, let m-"
I cut him off and put my hands around his neck. I pull his head down and kiss him praying he will take me back. David kisses me back. Thank god. We pull away and I smile but he doesn't smile back. David pulls me into a corner next to the T.V. away from the crowd.
"Liza, I can't do this"
"What? What are you talking about? Why not?"
"I don't feel the spark anymore, especially after what I just saw. I don't know how to explain it, but when you kissed Todd just now, I didn't get mad and I wasn't jealous."
"How long has this been going on?" This is weird...he seemed like he cared in the kitchen?
"I guess since your birthday?" he murmurs, unconsciously rubbing the back of his neck. He's lying. He only rubs his nape when he's nervous or lying.
"Then what happens now? There's no way I can make this work is there?"
"I don't know if I can be with you or take another shot at this if I just don't have feelings for you."
That's the day I lost my first love.
No One's POV
December 20, 2029
Ah, the holiday season. When little boys and girls wish to Santa for their greatest wish like a pony or a light saber. When their parents spend the most money out of the whole year. When parents spend time with their children picking out presents that they want 'Santa' to get them. Especially Faye and her single dad David Dobrik along with Caleb and his also single mom, Liza Koshy. They pull their parents around the streets in the barely chilly climate of Southern California.
"I want this one Dad!" The boisterous little girl jumps up and down, her milk chocolate pigtails jumping along with her. She points at an exclusive Barbie doll in the window of a toy store. She looks up into her father's loving, brown eyes.
"Of course, princess." He smiles his slightly crooked smile down at his little 5-year-old girl and kisses her head.
"Mama, can I have a monster truck when I'm older?" She glances at her 6-year-old and chuckles. She squats down to his level and attempts to smooth his brown curls.
"Well I dont know about a real monster truck sweetie, but we can get you a toy monster truck. How does that sound?" Liza smiles sweetly.
"Awesome!" He exclaims pumping his fists in the air.
"Let's go!" She laughs and kisses her precious little boy's forehead.
Both parents love their children very, very much.
Both parents fell in love with each other once.
Both parents fell out of love with each other.
Both parents married other people.
Both parents divorced those other people, gaining full custody.
Both parents would do anything for their children.
Both parents were at the same shopping plaza.
Liza and Caleb, hand in hand, pass by a tall man and his light brown pigtailed girl, who's currently getting a piggyback ride. Liza notices the familiar man and turns back taking another look.
"David?" She calls out, hopeful. The man turns around and they meet eyes.
"Liza?" He questions, not believing the sight before him. They slowly walk up to each other to meet in the middle. David lets Faye down and Caleb lets go of his mother's hand. The children switch adults to greet the stranger.
"Hi! I'm Caleb!" He says looking up at David and holding his hand out for him to shake it. David squats down and shakes his hand.
"I'm Faye!" She runs to give the stranger a hug like any other 5-year-old. David gets up and looks at Liza while Liza gets up and looks back at him.
"How old is he?" David asks, ruffling Caleb's curls.
"Six. Yours?"
"Five. How have you been?"
"Good, I guess."
"Are you done making googly eyes at her Dad? I wanna go to the American Girl Doll store!" Liza and David both flush red. Well, David does, Liza turns to a mere pinky mauve. Caleb tugs on his mother's trenchcoat.
"Yeah Mama, there's a store with a bunch of monster trucks over there!"
"Guess you'd better be going?" David lightly chuckles.
"Yeah, um it's been nice catch-"
"Maaaaamaaaaa!"
"Okay, okay," she says to Caleb. "See you?" she asks David.
"Maybe."
With that they let their children lead them away to opposite sides of the plaza but not without David and Liza glancing back at each other to meet the eyes they fell in love with all those years ago.
