Fandoms: the good, the bad, and the worst
Well... me being a MHA fan, you could say this was coming...
I know what some might be expecting, but there are actually plenty of cool people inside fandoms.
Not looking further, here in Wattpad I have come to learn than those who are introvert in real life are often those who have more to offer. Those are the ones who write fanfics that provide me and many others with hours of fun; some of them have even worked as a source of inspiration to start my own writing. Not to mention I am very grateful to those authors and readers who have made me feel like I can express myself in English almost as well as in my own language.
Like I was saying, there are indeed people here I would easily want to be friends with in real life (no names, or else we wouldn't finish soon). Variety here is awesome: different countries, ages, religions, ideologies, hobbies... yeah, it is true that at the end of the day this is another social net, and as such, anything you know about an user is what that user wants you to know, but that doesn't make people less interesting.
All right, we better skip to the part everyone know it's coming...
Creativity and liberty of expression is always something to be protected and celebrated, we can all agree on that. Now, I don't want to put the B word after this last affirmation, because it is too important to make it look pointless, BUT it would be pointless indeed to deny there is a great deal of toxicity in anime fandoms. Anyone can have fun with crazy theories, over the top pictures, or alternative storylines in the form of fanfics, and that's great, BUT there must be a limit on what can a fan take seriously.
One of the things about anime that has always shocked me is the amount of hatred some characters can get. Right, there are those who are hated for the correct reasons, this is, those villains whose character is built up with that purpose. Many might be immediately be thinking of Frieza, but I personally love the example of Griffith, from Berserk: the guy is the leader of a band of mercenaries, a cunning warrior, a visionary, and all in all, a self made man who will stop at nothing to fulfill his dream of turning from commoner to king. He brings protagonist Guts and the other fan favorites together and he shares his dream with them and leads them to countless victories along the Golden Age Arc, and as a reader myself I was fascinated by this smart and charismatic prick who, despite that aura, I knew he was a manipulator and someone who was pathing his way to his dream by piling up the corpses of enemies and allies alike (in fact, there is a vision where this is literally depicted in both the manga and anime adaptations). But as a character you also know he's exceptional and brilliantly developed, so you come to accept him... and then the Eclipse happened. I will make no spoilers in case someone hasn't read or seen this masterpiece that only God knows if its author will finish someday, but... have you heard the quote/meme "Griffith did nothing wrong"? Well, my ass he didn't. As I was saying, this character deserves the hate he receives and I honestly can't wait to see him dead.
Then they are the divisive ones, which are actually rather common in Shonens. Enter Sakura, a female ninja who has more than earned her spot as one of the most popular and important characters in a long running series like Naruto; that been said, we can all agree she faces no small amount of critics, even today. Sure, at the beginning of the series she tended to be annoying and some may even call her selfish in her infatuation with Sasuke, and bland in comparison to him and Naruto (no offense to those who shipped him with Sakura, but even when Naruto protected her she used to hit him hard, so I am more than glad he ended with Hinata), but one must understand that character development must start somewhere, and anyone in adolescence can show his worst more easily than his best. That's how it works: you can totally like someone as a child and totally despise him as an adult, and viceversa. In my opinion, Sakura is by no means a character that must be hated, specially now she's a mother. I won't deny though her relationship with Sasuke sometimes escapes my comprehension.
Speaking about divisive characters, and being a My Hero Academia fan myself, you know I can't miss this opportunity to give my personal view on a certain character...
First of all, I would never try to justify the deplorable habits of Minoru Mineta, which include spying the girls' changing room, getting sticked to Yaoyorozu's back and telling a six year old girl he can't wait to see how she would look like in ten years. After that last one, I just said: "if they hate you it won't be because you didn't earn it". In fact, now the subject are toxic fandoms, sometimes we could consider Mineta as the personification of some of the worst of MHA fandom. I'll explain: yes, Mineta is a pervert and even if he is comedic relief for the 80% of the time, he has crossed the line in more than a few occasions; now we all agree on that, please think of THAT KIND of fan art a considerable part of the fandom is infamous for, or those dirty jokes one could easily find on a comment section, and tell me there is not some hypocrisy behind the hatred Mineta receives. That part of the fandom may be like "ew, Mineta treats women like objects; he's a piece of trash and deserves to die! Oh, look, there's the MHA hentai I was looking for!" . No judgements, in privacy people have the right to entertain themselves the way they prefer, as long as they hurt nobody. I'm just saying it is kind of funny that some MHA fans (probably adults) charge against a sixteen year old fictional characters with hormones instead of brain when they may be consuming Rule 34 like Skittles.
And now we reach the category of characters that are hated for seemingly no reason. Unfortunately, I find it too hard to have an opinion here. Someone please tell me: how can any living person hate Hinata Hyuga, for example? She was the shy and bullied character that many of us might have been at some point in life, and from there she grew up to become a great ninja, and an even greater woman, wife (like Naruto predicted) and mother. And don't give me that most of the time she was just the girl in love with the main character, because for most of her life she kept fighting and caring for her friends and relatives assuming Naruto was likely never going to love her back and she was fine with it, because she truly loved him. She totally deserved the happily ever after she got, and even if Naruhina relationship could have been handled better, it is what even for real life standards would be called a healthy one. If anything, I would hate that now she's a force to be reckon with, both as ninja, wife and mother (ask Boruto) she's been relegated to housewife, but this is something that could bring to another writing. And back to MHA, why there are fans that hate Uraraka or call her a bad character? Some criticize that she wants to become a hero for the money, and others claim that her development revolves around Deku's and that the reason she remains so popular is (again) because she has a crush on him. Well, I have a very clear opinion on Uraraka and why she's my favorite in the series. First, she wants to be a hero to earn money so she and her family can have a better economic situation and her parents don't have to work so hard, which makes her realistic and caring for her parents (I don't know about you, but as much as I expect to like my job, my main purpose will be sustainability in the future too). Second, and this is shown in the manga, the other reason is because she loves the people's happy faces after they see a hero do his job, and that makes her heroic. Third, she keeps working hard and supporting her friends as much as she can, which makes her a fighter and a good friend. And finally, the fact that she chooses to hide her feelings for Deku so none of them get distracted from their goals, as much as we don't like it, makes her selfless, committed and mature for someone of her age. There is a thought that making good female characters fall in love ruins them, but I don't share it, at least not in these cases, since it gives them a huge plus to be considered best girls. So, please, quit the hatred towards this kind of characters: you wish you had them in real life.
I want to conclude giving a brief look at the ships. I already mentioned Sasuke and Sakura don't make exactly a solid couple, but there are actually reasons to keep shipping them and I hope they can spend more time together solving their issues in the future (seriously, a manga, anime series, movies, spin offs, and not even a kiss on the cheek; it remains a mystery to me how the hell Sarada was even born). The MHA ships on the other hand... well, what can I say you guys already don't: there are the adorable and already being canonically developped, like Izuocha and Kamijirou; the toxic ones, like Kacchako or Izutoga; the ones that make more for laughs like Kiribaku; the ones that on paper might look plausible but on practice they have little base, like Deku x Melissa (yes, I mean it; they are both born Quirkless and admire All Might, so what? It shares the same logic that like saying that two people would make a good couple because they are both otakus and have the same favorite anime); the ones we ship simply because they are cute, like Kota x Eri; and then there are the creepy ones I won't even bother to mention. What sometimes freaks me out is how far are people willing to go to defend those which make no sense at all.
And Fujoshi ladies, please, it's alright if you love gay couples, but there are already good LGTBI anime couples, and ships like Tododeku or Bakudeku (we all liked A Silent Voice, but these two have nothing to do with that) are simply out of place no matter how you try to put it. Fan arts and fanfics is one thing; spreading hatred is another. I hate many ships, but I don't get into other person's work's comment section just to say "No, Ship A is trash, I prefer Ship B".
Again, it may be all a matter of taste, but only as we remain respectful.
This was short, but my opinion doesn't get much longer, and there are many other topics I would like to write about these days, so welcome back to the Pub!
If you disagree on any opinion I shared we shall have a friendly debate, I promise. Read the letter: NO HATRED ALLOWED
I'm sure you might have some opinions to share here, since after all it was one of you who suggested this one. It is your turn, Watties! Oh, and remember I keep accepting suggestions from my clients, both for the Pub and the Art Book. Speaking of which, if you like the drawings you find there, don't forget to vote and comment anything you feel like. Also, feel free to order anything you see in the form of emojis, please!!😊😊😊
