Chapter 8- The Assembly
Oliver's POV~
It was the middle of the school day and Jake, Michael, and I were working on a science project about certain species of animals. We decided to work on bats because I find them cute. Especially the baby ones that are fed through bottles. It's so adorable!
Halfway through the drawing of a bat I was doing, there was an assembly meeting called. All students were told to head down to gym. I ran into Ray and Richard on the way with Michael and Jake close behind. I got curious so I asked them if they knew what was happening.
"According to rumor, it's an assembly about those with powers." Richard says while we scurry to the gym. Ray then continues on and explains what he knows. "Apparently it's something very important that the students with powers should know."
Jake and Michael heard and questioned them as we continued to the gym. Michael was the first to speak. "So Mr. Winter here and I should pay attention then?" I nod at the two of them. "It'd be a good idea." The two of them nod and we all sit next to each other.
We look down to see the principal with a microphone in his hand. There was a projector on the floor that'd be used for a presentation. The principal tested the microphone and talked in a serious tone. "This assembly is for those who have powers in our school. If you wish to go back to your class, you may. Those who are friends with someone with powers may stay."
A lot of students got up and went back to their class. We decided to stay since we feel the need to know what's going to happen.
The principal turns on the projector which lights up the entire wall. He gets the screen ready and starts the assembly. "As most of you know, there may be something that a power-induced person can have. Obviously, they'd have a power, but some people may have more than just that. Some users may have a weapon, some may have a power move. But today, scientists discovered a new phenomenon in the world. This phenomenon allows those with powers to take on a new form and greatly increases their power. There's only small changes to these forms, usually more limbs or new ones. We have called this increase in power and strength a "Limitation Edge."
All of us were intrigued. A great increase in strength and the addition of limbs. This seemed very interesting to me. Even if I'm powerless, I wonder what it'd be like if Michael and Jake had it. As I thought about this, the principal continued.
"We have discovered that this power can only be used in dire situations, like a strong threat to someone or themselves. We also have discovered that even if those who have Limitation Edge aren't in their power, they can control when the form is used. So if someone had an extra set of arms, they can use them whenever, but being in that form doesn't mean anything. Limitation Edge itself is caused by survival instincts. The use of the extra limbs or whatever is more of a cosmetic thing than a power thing. We don't have tests that can prove whether someone has it or not. And Limitation Edge can't be forced out of people. It's only when people are for sure in danger. So don't try and kill yourselves over finding out if you have it or not. As of now, there's only 12% of the world population that has this ability, but since it's just discovered, there could be more. But we know for sure that not everyone has it. The chances of having it are slim as far as we know."
Soon after, the assembly was done and we continued on until lunch. Due to the assembly, our science project was pushed a few days later so we'd have more time to do it. At lunch, I asked Richard how he thought about my drawing. He smiled at it and patted my head. "It looks good, bud. Just a bit of advice, try to go between the lines you mess up on. And don't try to just straight up draw a line. Lightly sketch before you darken your lines." I nod and put side notes on what to do.
Michael and Jake soon sat next to me and you could tell they were thinking. I lightly touched their shoulders to get their attention. They both looked down at me and smiled. I sighed and asked them if they were thinking about the assembly. They both nodded. Jake was the first to speak.
"It's just the thought, I guess. I mean, having extra limbs? Having an increase in power? It sounds amazing, but it makes me fear for the worse in the future." I tilted my head slightly. "Why? They say Limitation Edge can only be achieved in dire situations." Michael explained his mind, which Jake agreed to. "The thing is, what if someone found the power to unlock it without situational consent? Like, they can control when they use it? People may end up with a god complex or some may just seek destruction altogether."
I nodded. They have a very valid point. And the Guardians of the City wouldn't come all the way out here to save us. I mean, I don't want to say they wouldn't, but they'd have a heck of a time trying to get here on time. I looked at them and smiled. "That means you two will have to look out for everyone here."
Their eyes widened along with Richard and Ray. I then explained my thoughts. "Well, think about it. The only people here who have powers, that I know of, is these two. I'm sure there's a few more in this school, so they'd help out too." They both nodded slowly. I could see the nervousness in their eyes. I gave the two of them a reassuring head pat. These two big guys are really just big softies.
Lunch was soon over and we headed to the next class.
???'s POV~
I saw Oliver and the other two go their separate ways. Good. They're secluded. I walked over to the two models and they looked down at me.
"Hello?" "Yes?"
I frowned and gave a serious look. "I think you two should know the truth. That boy you two talk to is dangerous." They both look over at the white dog who was walking away with the other two dogs. Jake talked first. "Oliver? You're kidding, right? He wouldn't hurt a fly." Michael nodded in agreement.
I continued on. "You think you know him so well when you really don't know anything about him. His dad is an assassin. His mom used to gang leader. That kid is trouble. He's only using you for his own amusement. He wants nothing to do with you." This pissed the two of them off. Jake froze my hand to the wall and glared at me as electricity visibly sparked around Michael as he glared as well. "You keep your mouth shut. Oliver isn't like that. He is the nicest person in the world, and you can't convince us otherwise. So leave us and him alone." Jake unfroze my hand and Michael and him walked off to the next class.
I rubbed my numb wrist and scowled. Those fools. If they won't heed my warning, then I'll let everyone else know. Surely then, that damn dog will be killed and those two will leave and go somewhere else. The way it should be. I then continued to my next class. And people will heed my warning. Even if it's a lie.
