Not Just For Entertainment

A/N
For this chapter I decided to make a little story that explains how music is not just for fun and entertainment.

-

Amaryllis and Jenivine have been best friends ever since elementary school. They both have always been interested in the arts, but Amaryllis was more interested in music while Jenvine loved painting and drawing. The two friends are now both in their Junior year of high school, and Amaryllis has noticed some changes in Jenivine during the past few weeks.

It has almost been a month, and Jenivine has been giving into depression. At first, Amaryllis thought that her best friend just needed some alone time, and she didn't want to be too nosy with her persona life. Amaryllis was always considerate of other people's feelings and personal space, so she paid close attention to Jenivine's actions and took note of it, making sure nothing got too serious. Whenever she asked, "Are you okay?" Jenivine would always reply with something like, "Yeah, I'm fine. You don't need to worry." or "Today's just not my day.". Jenivine is the type of person who doesn't like to make people worries and get anyone involved with her own problems, because she knows that's everyone has their own problems they have to deal with. In their classes she would catch a glance at Jenivine and see her struggling with the assignments they were given. Amaryllis also noticed that Jenivine has been painting less, and when she did, her art somehow seemed sad and gloomy. Not only was she in a in emotionally, but physically as well with some cuts and bruises on her arms and legs.

One day, Amaryllis finally went up to Jenivine and took her to a private park that only a few people knew, bringing her acoustic guitar.

"Amaryllis, why did you bring me here? You know I need to focus on school..." Jenivine said to her friend, with a slight frown on her face and looked at the ground.

Amaryllis just gently smiled and sat down on a bench, motioning Jenivine to sit next to her.

"Just listen to this song." she said as she got her guitar ready and began playing, singing the lyrics of the song called "Hysteria":

All of these cuts and bruises that will fade away
I act as if they've made me that much wiser
Another night I sink into my lonely bed
To shut out every sound as I scream inside my head
And like a turning wheel, the time keeps moving on
The pain from yesterday is now just so long gone
And as I fall into another aching sleep
The crying voice I keep on hearing echoes deep

It's every shameful fall, every mistake that I've made
These are the scars that have brought me where I am today
Another false conception that I fed myself to escape reality
The only lie I see is now inside of my head
The only truth slips through my fingertips in the end
Let me keep on dreaming as I watch the days just pass me on by

I turn another page of my biography
And all the mysteries begin to fall in place
I wonder why I wasted so much precious time
I'd never find my life inside this cluttered room

I'm letting go today
They try to measure the depths of all the scars that we have
And try to prove to us that life could be so much more
But if you'd only stop and take a look around, you'd know that we're all the same
And as I keep repeating all the days in my head
It's like an endless movie that has no happy end
But the scene goes on without an answer and I will cry

It's every shameful fall, every mistake that I've made
These are the scars that have brought me where I am today
Another false conception that I fed myself to escape reality
The only lie I see is now inside of my head
The only truth slips through my fingertips in the end
Let me keep on dreaming as I watch the days just pass me on by

When she finished the song, Amaryllis carefully set her guitar down and looked at Jenivine.

"I know that you've been very stressed out about school, and I don't exactly know what problems you have to deal with at home, but I am tired of seeing you look so depressed everyday. I, too, used to feel like how you're feeling right now, but I felt all better in the end, thanks to music. Problems can't be solved in an instant, but listening to music can help reduce stress. I want you to listen to music everyday, especially classical music, because I did some research and found that listening to music can improve your mood and relieve symptoms of depression. It can even help you become more motivated. Music healed me, and I know that it can heal you too."

-two months later-

Jenivine did what Amaryllis told her and listened to music everyday, which was something she didn't do in the past. As the days went by, a smile gradually returned to Jenivine's face and she had less headaches. Her performance in school began to improve again and all of her wounds were healing.

Although music isn't a medicine you can take like a pill, it can heal you gradually just by listening to it.
