Chapter 1
Song is Clay by Grace VanderWaal. The beginning of this chapter is kind of sad, but it's not supposed to be too sad. Remember that.
No one knows my name. They do know my sister's name. Kiara Regina Barnes. Famous model and actress, giver to the poor, model citizen of Northern Illea. No one pays attention to me, though. The twin of this hero; Amber Barnes.
My pen stops and I think for a bit, my thoughts going too fast for me to form coherent thoughts.
"Ams? You in there?" Kiara softly calls from outside our door.
"I'm in here, Kia," I whisper.
She opens the door, her blonde curls gracefully framing her face. Everyone envies her hair, even I do sometimes, and I have that hair. Her's just always seems to bounce and shine. Mine are just a burden meant to kill my hands every day I comb through them. If I were to ever actually meet more people, they would tell me I have beautiful hair like my sister. But I don't meet people, because I know that most people will mistake me for my sister.
"Hey. Kylie called. She wants to meet up with you," Kiara says, now next to me.
I nod, standing up and stretching. Kylie's been my best friend since we were little. Her, Kiara, and I are practically inseparable. She's my only true friend. She and Kiara are all I need in my life. No more people. I'm content with just staying in my sister's shadow.
"Okay. Let's go then!" I say, brightening up.
If I were to ever let more people into my life, they would find I'm very interesting. Quirky, I guess.
Kiara smiles, before grabbing my hand and pulling me to the front door, where Kylie stood, a grin on her face.
"Hey, girlies! I need to talk to you two! It's an emergency!" Kylie squeals, pulling us both out the door and to the park across the street.
The park is used by the wealthy, which is what we are thanks to Kiara.
"What is is, Ky?" Kiara asks our hyper-active friend.
"Shawn asked me out, but I don't know if I should say yes!"
I huff. This is what she dragged us out for? Boy problems?
"Say yes!" Kiara suddenly screeches, jumping up and down now.
Both of them have been waiting for the moment Shawn asked Kylie out. I did too, but I wasn't as enthusiastic about it as they were. Now they're jumping around like giggly school girls. I'm surprised no one pays attention to how crazy my sister acts when she's around us. I guess they just like to keep their image of her intact.
"I will!" Kylie says, before she pulls us to a bench.
"So, how's that new movie, Kia?" Kylie asks my sister.
"Okay, I guess. It's fun."
"Cool. How about you, Ams? Baked anything new?" Kylie asks me now.
I shrug. They both know my dream is to open up a quaint little bakery, and bake myself a small name. I enjoy my sister's shadow, but sometimes, I wish I had my own name. Not 'Kiara's twin'.
"I made this new cookie recipe. It's pretty good, right Kia?"
Kiara nods enthusiastically, a grin stretching across her face. She really is gorgeous. We both got our good looks from both our parents. Of course, everyone knows her beauty more than my own, but I'm okay with that. I don't want too much attention. It scares me. Besides, I'm happy with the peaceful and wonderful life I have now.
"Ooh, you have to let me have a batch! You know how much my family loves your cooking!"
I nod, smiling as well. This is my perfect life. Why have fame as my sister's twin? I have my sister already, Kylie, my parents; who else do I need? one day, I'll marry someone who knows me as Amber, not 'Kiara's twin', and we'll live comfortably off my own income from my bakery. A simple and peaceful life. No cameras, no paparazzi, no interviews, no fame, no gossip about me, no unwanted attention.
"Come on! It's almost time for The Report!" Kiara suddenly exclaims, pulling us both up.
We all head to Kiara's and my house, since Kylie always comes over to watch with us. Our parents are already seated when we enter the living room.
"Oh, Kiara! We were wondering when you would come back! Hello, Kylie," our mother exclaims, smiling.
My parents beckon them over, before they turn their attention to me.
"Oh! Amber, I didn't know you left your room," my mother says, frowning slightly.
"I went out with Kia and Ky," I tell her.
She nods, before I go to sit down next to Kylie.
Ever since Kiara became famous, my parents have both kind of ignored me. It hurts a bit, but I know they still love me. They just have a slight favoring of Kiara over me, that's all.
The screen suddenly flashes with the North Illean crest.
"It's starting!" Kylie giggles, leaning forward.
I giggle too, leaning forward. I've always loved The Report. Especially seeing the royal family. They're so poised and elegant. Well, except for Prince Tyler King. He's a player. I'm surprised his image is still so good. It's not right. His twin, Mason, is the crown prince. Now Mason, he's the perfect prince: kind, gentle, sweet, and very smart. I do sympathize with Tyler, though. No matter what he does, he will always be stuck in his older twin's shadow, just like me. Except he doesn't want that. You can tell my how much he tries to get attention. It works enough, but still, Mason will always be the 'better prince'.
"Good evening, North Illea! Welcome to The Report! I'm your host, Julian Gamye!" The announcer's voice comes through the speakers.
My attention is directed at the screen now.
"Today, we have a very special announcement at the end of the episode! Now, for the national reports for finances and political news, told by our very own, King Harris," the announcer announces, before the king steps up to a podium and begins rattling off reports.
"Sadly, more deaths were counted along the border farmlands. Twenty were injured, while three were killed. We mourn the loss of these three people deeply. The Southern Republic continues to move, but we have a counter attack at the ready. I thank you for all the support we've gotten from you, the people. We hope to beat the South, and finally unite our warring sides once again," the king says, finishing his report and stepping off the podium.
My breath is stuck in my throat. More attacks? The Southern Republic of Illea is getting stronger. A few generations ago, after the reign of Queen Eadlyn Schreave and her husband, the kingdom of Illea began to crumble. Then, the South side of Illea finally split away, claiming that castes should come back. They now have a caste system, as well as a monarch. The kingdom itself is not bad at all, but actually quite a magnificent sight. The only problem is the fact that they keep on trying to destroy our kingdom so they can come in and re-instate the caste system. It wouldn't hurt my family, but so many others would be affected. Which is why we're still warring with them. It's definitely died down since when it first started, but it still goes on with attacks along the southern border.
"Now, for the special announcement. Prince Mason, Prince Tyler? The stage is yours," the announcer says, before stepping away to reveal the two princes.
Mason smiles politely at the camera, while Tyler gives out a wink. I almost roll my eyes. Player.
"Good evening, Illea. We have a very special announcement," Mason begins.
"In light of our upcoming nineteenth birthday, we've decided we'll be holding..." Tyler continues, before he pauses.
"A selection," they both end at the same time, followed by Kiara and Kylie shrieking, and me staring blankly at the screen.
A selection.
So, this is going to be my second fan fiction for the Selection series! I'm excited. I did one this past summer, but it was horrible, plus it was my second book I ever wrote before. So, I think with my little more experience, this will be better.
