Chapter 3

Picture above is of Amber's dress ^ Song is Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots (my babies |-/)

"Kia, this dress is nice and all, but do I have to wear it?" I ask Kiara, as she fluffs my curls out a bit, placing a violet in my hair afterward.

"Yes! You need to look just as beautiful as a model," Kiara exclaims, starting to open up a bottle of eye liner.

"No. I am not wearing eye liner."

She pouts, but I keep my resolve.

"Kia, I want to blend in; not draw attention to myself. Besides, you need to be the star of the show. I'm just your shadow, okay?"

She frowns, shaking her and putting the makeup away.

"Fine, but you will still stand out."

She gives me some lip balm to apply, and I do use that, but only because my lips are chapped.

"Done! Let's go!" She giggles, skipping out the door.

Her light blue dress bounces with her, the glittery bodice sparkling from the light seeping through the windows.

I trudge after her, regretting every step I take, closer and closer to my doom via attention.

When we walk outside, I watch as groups of girls dressed up nicely walking to the office of services. Kiara and I follow them, me hiding slightly behind my sister. My hand finds hers, and she squeezes mine, comforting me.

The walk isn't short, which is bad. It's bad, because the office is a ten minute walk. It only took us three minutes before we saw the never-ending line of girls in an array of colorful dresses and skirts. Oh goodness.

Time skip to two hours later because who wants to read about a boring two hours of waiting? :P

My feet ache, and my eyes strain to stay open.

"Next!" A camera man calls out.

Kiara's hand is suddenly absent from mine, as she steps up and places her form next to the camera man.

He gasps, like everyone else has. He takes pictures of her, in awe of her. I sigh, hoping nothing close to what is happening will happen with me. Maybe he'll think I'm some random -

"Next!"

Oh no.

I slowly walk up to the camera man, shyly placing my form on top of Kiara's. When he looks up at me, he gasps, narrowing his eyes.

"Miss Barnes, didn't I already take your picture?" He asks.

Kiara clears her throat from behind him, making him turn around.

"Sorry, I'm right here. This is my twin, Amber," Kiara explains.

The camera man nods, before facing me again.

"Okay, smile Miss!"

I give a shy - but still pretty - smile, hoping that's enough.

"Thank you!" He tells me.

I sigh, walking quickly back to Kiara.

She giggles, taking my hand again and dragging me back home. Now we just wait for two weeks before the results air on The Report.

TIME SKIP TWO WEEKS LATER...

"Amber, honey! The Report is coming on soon!" My mother calls.

I sigh, hopping off my bed and walking downstairs to the living room. Today's Friday. About two weeks ago, Kiara and I took our pictures and turned in our forms. Now, today the selected girls will be announced and chosen on live television.

"I'm here!" I call, sitting down next to my twin and Kylie on the couch.

"Are you excited?! One of you might go to the palace and meet the princes!" Kylie squeals, hopping up and down on the seat.

"I'm super excited! Ams? Are you excited?" Kiara giggles.

I shrug.

"I guess I'm excited. I do want to meet the princes, but I just don't want the attention."

They both nod, understanding my opinion. They both understand my want to stay in the shadows of my sister's fame. Kiara actually helps me whenever we go out. She knows I hate attention as her twin - or attention period - so she always holds me behind her. It's funny, because I'm the older twin by three minutes, yet she takes care of me like she's the oldest.

"It's starting!" Kylie suddenly shrieks, latching on my shoulders from my left and shaking me violently.

"Good evening, North Illea! Welcome to The Report! I'm your host, Julian Gamye!" The announcer's voice calls from the television.

I turn my attention to the screen, spacing out a bit during the usual announcements. Luckily, no attacks have occurred recently.

"And now, the moment we've all been waiting for! Please welcome our princes!" The announcer exclaims, gaining my undivided attention.

The two princes walk up to center stage, where the set is. The set itself is more of a talk show set, rather than a news set. Prince Tyler sits down on a couch, followed by Prince Mason. They both have small smiles on their faces.

"So, today's the day you both get to see the thirty-two girls who will compete for your hearts. How do you feel?" The announcer asks the two princes on the couch.

"I'm excited to see them," Mason replies.

"As am I, though I think I mean it a lot more than my brother," Tyler says, winking at him.

Mason's smile widens just a tad, but he keeps his calm demeanor. They've obviously discussed this before hand.

"Great! And now; the lucky thirty-two selected!" The announcer exclaims, before the screen shifts.

Mason's and Tyler's faces appear in boxes in the corners of the screen, and the rest of the screen is filled with the royal crest for now. This is to show their reactions to the girls.

My heart starts to beat faster, but I try to ignore it. Why am I so nervous, anyway? It's not like I'll be chosen. If anything, my twin will. She's famous, kind, drop-dead gorgeous, and very poised in public. How could they not choose her?

"Evangeline Wilson of Hudson!"

A girl with pixie-cut white hair and beautiful purple eyes pops up where the crest used to be. She's beautiful, and looks strong and independent. I already want to root for her if my sister doesn't get in.

"Angelica Patterson of Hudson!"

Another girls pops up, but I instantly know who she is. Kiara sometimes hangs with her whenever they do modelling shoots together. She's a bit - female dog, that's for sure.

In her picture, her brown eyes are hooded and heavily lined with eye liner. Her plump lips are dyed a dark crimson shade, and it's kind of scary.

The announcer rattles of multiple other names - twenty, to be exact - before he arrives at our province.

"Kiara Barnes of Hansport!" I hear, before ear-splitting shrieks come from my mother, my twin, and my best friend.

"I'm in the Selection!" Kiara screams, jumping up and down.

"I knew you would get i-" I start but instantly freeze when I hear a name I never thought I'd hear.

"What's this? It looks like we have a pair of twins in this Selection! Amber Barnes of Hansport!" The announcer calls.

My whips to the screen, only to stare at my face. I look so innocent and pure: like nothing could ever taint me. Kiara was right, I looked beautiful in that dress. A few gasps can be heard from the set, and even my own gasp fills our house's now dead silence. It wraps me up in it's arms, suffocating me.

Then the screeching starts up again.

"WE'RE BOTH IN THE SELECTION!" Kiara screeches, hugging me tightly.

The announcer continues rattling off the last ten names, before he turns to the princes.

"My, my; that was an interesting pick. What did you think of everyone? Especially Kiara Barnes and her apparent twin?" The announcer inquires of the princes.

"They were all very beautiful. I'm quite surprised that a lady as famous as Kiara had a twin not many knew of," Mason replies expertly.

"Yes, they were," Tyler agrees.

The announcer nods, smiling, before he signs off.

As soon as he does, the screen goes black, and all the phones in the house suddenly explode with their urgent rings. The Selection has begun, and I'm dreading every second of it.

Ah, finally! The semi-boring part is more or less over! It's time to start getting the ladies to the palace! Whelp, that was interesting, right?
