Chapter 4
Song is Truce by Twenty One Pilots.
It's been a week since my twin and I have been selected, and it's been one of the craziest weeks of my life.
After the phones started ringing like crazy, we got visitor after visitor from the palace, asking for things from measurements to our health records. We gave everything, even going over rules for our time at the palace.
My anxiety to go only increased when I saw how many rules and regulations there were. I can't even leave my room at night without permission!
Tomorrow, my sister and I will be heading off to the palace, and I could not be more anxious.
For one thing, I'll be leaving my only home I've ever known. Although my parents don't really pay as much attention to me with Kiara around, I know they still love me and I love them too. Plus, I will miss Kylie; she's like my other twin. Kiara, Kylie, and I are like triplets, really.
Speaking of Kylie...
"Amber! Come on! Stop spacing out, and tell me if you think this dress is cute!" Kylie whines at me, holding up a pretty silver dress.
"It's beautiful, Ky."
She smiles, holding it to her body as she twirls around. Kiara giggles from her bed, kicking her feet up like a school girl.
"I can't believe Shawn asked me out! I can't wait!" Kylie giggles for literally the tenth time since she told us earlier.
I sigh, rolling my eyes playfully.
"Come on, Ky. He asked you out what, two weeks ago? This is your third date, too," I point out to her.
She frowns a bit.
"I know, but every time he does ask me out, it feels like the first time," she sighs, falling backwards onto space in between Kiara and I on the bed.
Kiara giggles again, flipping the page in her book. Kylie gets up from off the bed, skipping to the bathroom to change.
Kiara flips over to look at me, a grin stretched across her face.
"So, are you excited for tomorrow?" She asks me, giggling slightly at the end.
"No. I don't want to go. The moment we step out of this door, we not only become celebrities, but the property of the Illean Court!" I exclaim, my heart beginning to beat faster.
"Ams, it's not that ba-"
"Yes, it is! My life from now one will no longer be private and beautiful! My every move will be judged! My every word picked apart! I don't want to become like you! I just want a normal and quiet life!" I shout, my frustration rising.
"Ams."
Kiara suddenly hugs me, crushing me in her comforting embrace. I feel a few tears leak down my face, but I don't wipe them away.
"Kia, I don't want to go. I don't want to leave Mom and Dad, or Ky, or our house, or even this province. I just want a normal life. No attention. Why can't I have that?"
"Shh, shh; it's okay, Ams." She pulls away to look at me. "Look, you're a beautiful girl who's a talented chef and has an amazing personality. I understand you don't want to be in the spotlight, but now that you will be, own it. Be that special girl I know you are. Make the most of your unwanted fame, because it won't go away."
I sniffle, nodding.
"Come on, let's make dinner. Mom and Dad are out for dinner, so let's make something else. Does homemade pizza sound good?"
I nod.
She grins, before pulling me up.
"Why don't you make some goodbye cupcakes and cookies, call Ky over, and we all have a girl's night?"
I nod again, smiling now.
"Let's go then!" She giggles, pulling me along.
"I'm going to miss you guys," Kylie mumbles on my lap.
"I'll miss you too, Ky," I whisper back.
Kiara is fast asleep on my shoulder, her soft snoring making me giggle. Kylie is already falling asleep, but I'm wide awake. In a few hours, Kylie and I have to take a flight to Whites, which is across North Illea. It's going to be an extremely long flight.
"Ky, make sure you watch our parents; make sure they're okay," I whisper to Kylie.
She mumbles a response that I take as a yes.
"And, have fun with Shawn."
Another mumble.
"Oh, and root for Kiara, please; she deserves it," I whisper last, as my eyelids start to droop.
I don't get a response, instead getting a soft snore from her.
I laugh softly, before succumbing to sleep myself.
"Amber?! Where are my books?!" Kiara screams, running into my room.
"Uh, right here," I mumble, packing my own books into a small satchel.
Today's the day. They day my life changes forever. Kiara has been running around non-stop, packing books and special mementos and little things for our stay
I only pack a few books, a few pictures and nice letters from my family and Kylie, and a special locket Kylie got Kiara and I. It's a set of three silver chains with heart lockets on them, each one with our name engraved on it, and a picture of all of us together.
I open this locket that's now around my neck, sighing as I look at our smiling faces. We look so happy.
"Amber, trust me; this will be an amazing experience," Kiara tells me, pulling me into a hug.
"Yeah," I sigh softly, closing my eyes and hugging her back.
I can always depend on my sister; she'll always be with me through thick and thin.
"Girls! Come on!" My father calls us.
I grab my satchel, Kiara doing the same, and we both rush downstairs. We're both dressed in black pants and a white blouse, our province flower - a poppy - in our hair. Mine keeps on slipping, and it's annoying. Kiara and I both put on our necklaces as well, and that's what my empty hand wraps around, the other one holding the strap of my satchel to my side.
"We'll miss you so much, but don't think that you can come home early. We want you both to do your best, alright?" My mother says to us, hugging us both.
"Yes, Mom," Kiara sighs, rolling her eyes playfully.
Our mother beams. Our father hugs us next, followed by Kylie squeezing the life out of us.
"Good luck! Write to me, and tell me if the princes are as cute as they are on TV!"
I shake my head, agreeing nonetheless.
Kiara and I walk to the door, pausing slightly.
"Bye," Kiara says, before opening the door.
As soon as we do, screams deafen my poor ears. I squint my eyes against the light and look around. Crowds of people chant our names and hold up signs with our names, all of them excited.
"Miss Barnes and - uh - Miss Barnes, do you have anything to say to your province?" The mayor asks, suddenly right next to us.
Kiara nods, and the mayor guides us to a podium.
Kiara speaks, and I politely decline speaking; I don't need more attention drawn to myself.
After Kiara speaks, the mayor says some words, pride splashed in her voice. She's obviously confident one of us or both of us will win. I'm sorry that I will have to let her down.
We hop into a limo next, the person who often came by our house from the palace seated in the car with us.
"Good morning, girls! Are you ready for the long flight to Whites?" She asks us in her peppy voice.
"Yes!" Kiara giggles, but I shrug.
The lady - who's name is Miss Vera - smiles. The car lurches slightly, and we're off.
So, they're off now, eh? I'm excited to get them to the palace, and I almost skipped all of this, but I want to stick to the book as much as possible details-wise. I'm not going to copy the plot, of course, but certain details like what they're wearing and what happens I want to stick to.
