II. GUTS Review
( here's a little moodboard i made for GUTS )
Hey guys!! Guts is officially out and I've been listening to it all day! I'm not going to rank it just yet since it just came out but what I will do is give my top 5 as of right now and go track by track and give my thoughts on each song!
1. all american bitch
rating: 10 / 10
PERFECT SONG IDC
I love this song sm and the contrast between the verses being light and the chorus being so hard-hitting, I LOVE IT.
This whole song gives me "golden girl" vibes who is crumbling under the pressure of the ideals that society has for her.
Which makes sense since the song is about the contradicting ideals that women have in american society.
"i've got sun in my motherfucking pocket, best believe" is my favorite lyric.
I feel like this song will go hard when she performs it for tour, like the screaming part is going to be fun to do live!
2. bad idea right?
rating: 7 / 10
This one i also really like, if i were to rank GUTS now, this would be towards the bottom of my ranking. but it's still such a good song.
The buildup is amazing and the production goes hard.
I love that when she says "fuck it, it's fine" the music goes away because she's not listening to the voices telling her that going to her ex's house is a bad idea.
it's such a fun and playful song that's so good for rom-coms.
3. vampire
rating: 8 / 10
The concept of this song is so smart. Like you think you know what the song will be about based on the title, but then, Olivia goes in a completely different direction.
The lyricism is top-notch and her vocals popped off. This song is hard to sing along 😭
I instantly loved it when she released it and the buildup in this one is also really good.
Oh, and the bridge slaps. And I've been eating up the TVD edits since the song came out.
4. lacy
rating: 13 / 10
LACY OH LACY
THIS IS THE BEST SONG ON GUTS DON'T FIGHT ME
It's just so soft and pretty and ahhh, I can't even describe why I love it so much.
This song gives me Amelie by Gracie Abrahams, Dorothea and Ivy by Taylor Swift, all songs I really love so it makes sense this song would be my favorite.
5. ballad of a homeschooled girl
rating: 8 / 10
With all american bitch, this song is the second most retable song and I've never been homeschooled.
The lyrics are just so me. I over-sharer when I don't want to and I feel awkward an everything, idk, all of Olivia's songs feel like they could be in a coming of age movie but this song especially does.
The "ahhh ahhh ahhhhhh" is so addicting.
6. making the bed
rating: 9 / 10
Idk, I gravitated towards a lot of the slower songs so yeah.
I imagine this song to play in a movie where the big fight happens and the main character is all by themselves, feeling sad. it fits that emotion so well.
It's so emotional and makes me want to cry, but we love songs like that.
"got the things i wanted but not the way i imagined" is so freaking true and relatable.
I'm happy that there's a track where Olivia talks about how fame has made her life different and just the consequence of fame in general.
Very Castles Crumbling - coded.
7. logical
rating: 8 / 10
THE CHORUS
THE CHORUS
The song perfectly executes the message it wants to. Her voice sounds so pretty on this song and the theme of the song is very sad.
I love the echoey "logical, love is never logical"
I like the melody as well.
8. get him back!
rating: 7 / 10
Everybody's been loving this song and I like it too, but I think it's going to have to grow on me a little more.
Every-time I listen to the song, it does. So, I'm sure it'll probably make its way into my top 5.
I love the pettiness and sassiness of this song as well.
The bridge is my favorite part of the entire song, to be honest.
"I wanna meet his mom just to tell her her son sucks" is so unserious, Olivia is hilarious.
The ending is giving very much "You what they say in Chicago, he had it coming" that Sabrina Carpenter did at the end of emails i can't send ( the song ).
9. love is embarrassing
rating: 7 / 10
Right now, this song isn't a favorite of mine but I like it. I like the beat and the "I give up, I give up everything" is satisfying.
This song is another grower for me. But there's nothing with it.
10. the grudge
rating: 9 / 10
THE LYRICISM IN THIS SONG
I love the vibes of this song and like every lyric hurts
The lyric that made me drop my jaw, though, was:
"And we both drew blood, but man those cuts were never equal"
LIKE WHO WRITES THAT???
The song gives me vampire vibes, like maybe a sister song to vampire.
I LOVE THIS SONG
11. pretty isn't pretty
rating: 10 / 10
The "jealously, jealously" of GUTS
Y'know that TikTok where it's like "Every lyric, every word I feel" this is me with pretty isn't pretty.
I could tell what this song would be about based on the title but it still hurt... like this song is perfect for the girlies with self-esteem issues and that's me.
Really, it's relatable to every girl. And is it just me but this song give Barbie vibes to anyone?
I haven't seen the Barbie movie yet but it just gives me those vibes.
I love the chill beat and I can imagine driving and blasting this song.
12. teenage dream
rating: 10 / 10
You know how I said the grudge was the sister song to vampire?
teenage dream is the sister song to brutal.
In brutal she literally says "where's my fucking teenage dream?"
And this whole song, in my head, is kind of like a response to that line.
It just so perfectly describes how it feels growing up. but also it describes Olivia feeling the anxiety of following the success of GUTS.
And her vocals are so beautiful, which I can say for every song, but I really love how she sounds on this track.
It's heartfelt and gut-wrenching, and i love it so much.
The repetition of "They all say that it gets better the more you grow. Yeah, they all say that it gets better.
It gets better, but what if it's don't?" at the end is *chef's kiss*.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
rating: 9/ 10
All in all, this album is truly incredible. Olivia is truly the singer of our generation, the way she's able to so perfectly write what so many of us feel, whether you're a female or male, is just so crazy and truly amazing.
This album is definitely apart of the "best sophomores albums" along with Fearless by Taylor Swift.
You can tell the growth from Sour and GUTS. And GUTS really is the older, more mature sister to Sour, I love it.
The lyricism, production, Olivia's vocals, everything was just so perfect for this album.
I can't wait for whatever else Olivia has in store and I can't wait for the tour to be announced as well 👀
MY TOP FIVE:
( it was so hard choosing a top five but these are the songs that have stuck out to me. )
5. making the bed
4. pretty isn't pretty
3. the grudge / teenage dream
( i couldn't decide so they're sharing a spot )
2. all-american bitch
1. lacy
