Day 1

King had never once been excited about hospitals. Mostly because they're very depressing, no matter how many cheerful nurses you run into.

He had come to apply for a internship because he planned on going into a field that helped people. Of course being a doctor was number one on his list but he could be any kind he wanted. As he walked through the hallways his happy mood slowly diminished. He had got news that his sister survived. She'd gotten into a very bad accident and had very little chance at surviving. But she pulled through!

As he was walking his head was down and he bumped into someone.

"S-sorry..."

Before he could excuse himself she was already passed him continuing down the hallway. He slightly raised his voice and excused himself so he wouldn't seem rude. He knew she heard him because she put her hand up as to say its okay.

He stared a little longer to see if he could catch what she looked like but she never turned around. From what he could see she was at most 5'8, she had black hair with blue dyed ends, and she had brownish-tanned skin.

He decided to ignore the encounter and proceed to the front desk. He talked to the nice desk lady for a couple minutes before walking off with a decent sized stack of papers to sign at home and bring them back tomorrow. She said there aren't many slots left and the ones that are, most people completely turn down the internship because of them.

As he was going down the job list he found one that the lady had mentioned only about two people actually take. He could intern and do rounds helping people with incurable illnesses.  Make their "doctor predicted" lifespans more enjoyable and try to get them better.

He always wondered what it would be like to find a cure and an incurable disease like cancer or Alzheimer's. The satisfaction you get from knowing that millions of people who were supposedly on their death bed could live full lives. He knew that this goal was not for him though. King's the type of person you run to when you want to feel happy again, but can also sympathize with you.

He went home that night and immediately started filling out his paperwork. He knew he'd get the job based on what the desk lady said, so after he was done he decided to research some diseases and illnesses he may encounter on the job.

After researching for what seemed like hours, he compiled a list of common illnesses. He did this so he could make sure he wouldn't be insensitive to anyones situation. He may hate-dislike hospitals but no one should feel bad about being stuck there, it wasn't there fault. The people who deserve to be on their death beds are perfectly healthy, while the angels of the world are suffering.

King closed his computer and attempted to go to sleep. He was a slight insomniac, sleep didn't come easily all the time but he managed.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

"Uh hello?" The desk lady finally looked up after being called four times.

"Oh hello again! Here for your first patient?" He nodded.

"Well it seems that as long as this internship last, this person will remain your patient exclusively. You'll have other assignments but if they need anything they're your first priority." He thanked the desk lady and took the paper she was holding out to him.

"Now I see why she said i'm exclusively assigned to them. They don't have very long and no one will stay. People can be rude but it's their choice." He walked to the elevator and headed up to the third floor.

Room 302

"This is the room." He knocked on the door.

"C-come in." He entered and introduced himself.

"I'm Harlequin but you can call me King. It's nice to meet you...again." The patient looked up.

"Y-you're the g-guy I bumped i-into." He nodded.

"I remembered your hair color." They looked down at their hair.

"I guess its kinda hard to miss the person with blue hair. My name's Serenity Blythe. I know that's what the paper says but I just want to be polite." He thanks her and takes a seat in the chair closest to the wall.

"Well Serenity, do you usually get visitors?" She shakes her head.

"No. My sister used to come but she had to go back to school across the country. My parents are wealthy and don't have time to deal with a sick child. They have three others who are going to last to worry about." King's face dropped.

"How awful, no parent should abandon their kid because they're sick." She laughs.

"They used to come. But when the doctors said I would not recover they stopped. I get the occasional flowers and messages but that's it. I was supposed to finish college this year." He looked down at the paper.

"I might be 21 but I finished high school early. I was pretty smart and I knew I had this disease so I wanted to do what I could before I have to leave it behind." He leaned forward.

"I'm sorry. I kinda feel bad because although I did really well in school I never really cared for the memories I made. They used to be a reminder of me being stupidly childish but now I see them differently." Serenity asked why.

"Memories last a lifetime. They may be changed but some parts stay the same. But I wanted to know why you went through so many interns if you don't mind sharing."

"I have a heart disease and insomnia. I barely sleep and my heart has basically given up on me. People stay but then they leave because of how scary it is reporting a heart failure. Yeah I may have a chance at being revived but they don't want to see a girl who used to be a fit 130lbs be reduced to 97lbs and already look like a corpse." King nodded his head and kept asking more questions.

The two talked for what seemed like hours before Serenity needed have her daily check up done. So King went to other patients, all he needed to do was pop in and discuss whatever was on the clipboard with the patient.

It was the end of King's shift and he decided to see Serenity before he left.

"Serenity as you know, the doctors told us you have at most a couple of months left."

"I know. I just want to know if i'll be able to get my diploma. Even if I can't walk across the stage or leave this hospital, I want to have at least one more accomplishment in my short life."

"Yes, next month you will be receiving your diploma. Someone will frame it and bring it to you."

" Can it be—"

"She can't make it. She will FaceTime you but the only other people who can come are your big brother, little sister and your little brother. And I don't want the youngest to see this. And you know how busy he gets."

"He's not busy because he wants to be, and just say you don't want the twins to see their dying big sister. Even though it would be better to see me now than in a coffin if even that because you may keep them out of my funeral. Good day mother, see you on the other side."

"I'll be back soon."

"You won't but okay!"

King listened to the whole conversation before knocking on the door.

"Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to see how Serenity was doing before I leave for tonight."

"No worries. Bye sweetie." He mother shuts the door behind her as she exits.

"I-if she w-wanted to see me a-again she wouldn't have s-said g-goodbye." She put her head down as her tears fell. "No one is gonna be here for me in my final moments! I'm gonna leave alone!" King slowed walked toward her and gave her a hug.

"If it helps, I take my job and people's feelings seriously. I will be here to the end even if i'm the only one. You shouldn't leave this world alone and upset." She put her head on his shoulder.

"Thank you Mr. Harlequin."
