The Summer Of '94
A warm summer breeze rustled through Riley's hair, the young teenager perched high in the leafy embrace of a towering oak tree. With nimble limbs and a spirit of adventure, she had scaled the branches, seeking solitary and a vantage point to observe the world below.
From her elevated perch, she surveyed the landscape of Ottery St Catchpole, the area she had been born and grown up, with awe and wonder. A symphony of colours and life unfolding before her own eyes.
Riley was the picture-perfect definition of a free spirit. When she started walking her parents, Amos and Florence, knew there would be no stopping their daughter. And they were beyond correct.
Her eyes wandered to nature's canvas spread beneath her. A patchwork of green stretched as far as her vision could reach, with meadows, forests and distant hills merging seamlessly. The sun cast its warm glow upon the land, accentuating the vivid hues of flowers and leaves.
Riley marvelled at the intricate beauty of the natural world, finding serenity within the branches of her leafy sanctuary.
As much as she would've liked to spend her entire day up in the oak tree, her brother's voice called out to her from below.
"Rye, get down from there and come eat" Cedric hollered up to his baby sister.
Peeking down, she saw that her brother stood at the base of the tree. Clearly having no intent on leaving until she came down.
Groaning, Riley began her descent down the oak's branches. As she climbed down, she could hear the faint melodies of birds chirping, their sweet songs carried on the breeze. It was as if nature itself was serenading her and she headed back down.
Cedric chuckled when she finally touched down on the ground. "Finally, for someone who's as good at climbing trees as you, you sure do take a long time" He jested.
"You're a pain in my ass sometimes, you know Ced?" Riley inquired, jabbing her brother in the arm with her elbow.
Cedric was a few years older than Riley. He was the model child for the Diggorys. Getting good grades at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, being a seeker on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team and being popular beyond belief at school.
Even during her three years at Hogwarts, Riley had heard just about every girl rave about her brother and how good-looking he was. Naturally, being his little sister, she found their claims ridiculous and often wondered if they had their heads screwed on right.
He was the golden child, while she was the rowdy wild child.
Truthfully, Riley had never seen anything wrong with that. After all, they were two different people, she didn't think it was fair for everyone to compare them. But unfortunately, no one else seemed to get that.
The two siblings stomped up the front steps and entered their humble abode. The inside of their home was cosy. Warm hues of beige, brown and other neutral colours accented nearly every detail. Giving the interior a homey and welcoming vibe.
Oak wood flooring greeted them as soon as they walked into the living room. The walls were plastered with a soft brown vintage floral wallpaper and photographs of the Diggory family were also hung on the walls of the two-story home.
When Riley and Cedric stepped into the kitchen, their mom stood over the stove taking out the Shepherd's Pie she had made for the Diggory's lunch. Their dad sat at the dining table, reading the latest edition of The Daily Prophet.
Their parents, Amos and Florence, greeted their children with smiles upon seeing them walk into the kitchen. "Just in time, you two" Florence stated.
Once they sat down at the table, Florence began to dish out everyone's lunch. The mouth-watering scent of lamb mince, vegetables and mashed potatoes wafted throughout the kitchen.
The family of four then dug into their lunch, savouring the delicious aroma of freshly prepared Shepherd's Pie as they enjoyed a warm lunch together on a picturesque summer day in England.
Shovelling the steaming mince into her mouth, Riley hummed at the taste. She'd always adored her mom's cooking, there were few things that could beat the dishes that Florence created.
"Riley," Amos suddenly spoke, turning the young girl's attention to her father. He was a fairly tall man, with a ruddy face and a bedraggled brown bread. Amos worked for the Ministry of Magic, in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. "Look at the state of your clothes"
She looked down at her clothes. A colourful striped t-shirt and simple blue jeans were paired with grass-stained white sneakers. And true to her father's word, there were tiny rips and grass stains within the fabric pieces. Not that Riley really cared.
Frowning, her brows furrowed slightly. "What's wrong with them?" She chuckled.
Florence shook her head slightly at her daughter. "Riley, darling, just please be cautious of your clothes when your climbing trees" She advised.
Riley let out a soft sigh. "Okay, mom" She consented, before continuing to dine on her share of the Shepherd's Pie.
After finishing her food and washing her plate, Riley headed upstairs to her room. It was the smallest bedroom in the house, but she made it work.
This sacred space, uniquely hers, was an enchanting blend of personal style, treasured memories and the boundless potential of youth. Steeping through the doorway, Riley was immediately embraced by an atmosphere that radiated both comfort and self-expression.
The walls of her bedroom told a vibrant story. Adorned with a coat of paint in a complementary warm hue, that matched well with the floral wallpaper that covered most of the interior of the house, the room exuded a sense of serenity.
Situated in one corner of the small room was a bookshelf. Its shelves overflowing with a myriad of worlds and stories waiting to be explored by her. Interspersed among the books were trinkets, mostly from her childhood. Small figurines that represented her favourite animals and fictional characters.
However, the focal point of the room was her bed, a haven within the haven. Sitting proudly in the centre of the room, it was dressed in soft linens adorned with a checkered pattern. Pillows of various sizes, shapes and colours were carefully arranged, inviting her to dive into their comforting embrace.
Curled up in a ball near the head of her bed was her cat, Amaia. An orange and grey calico cat that she'd had since her first year at Hogwarts. She'd practically begged her parents to let her get the cat after she saw the feline in the window of Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley.
Collapsing onto her bed, Amaia lifted her head at the sudden dip in the mattress. Stretching out her long body, Amaia slunk over to her owner and rubbed the side of her face against Riley's side.
Laughing at the feline, Riley softly stroked her fur baby. Prompting the calico to pur against her warm palm.
As Riley continued petting Amaia, her eyes drifted away from her cat and to another corner of her room. Where her record player sat atop a record player stand, vinyl records tucked into their covers were slotted into the shelf just below the top flat surface where the audio sound system sat.
In the corner that her eyes had wandered over to, just above a record player were colourful posters of her favourite music artists and other memorabilia from the Wizarding World. Including a poster for the Irish National Quidditch Team, the quidditch team her whole family supported and that she, Cedric and their father were going to be watching tomorrow at the Quidditch World Cup.
Riley and Cedric had been looking forward to the event for the entire Summer. The Quidditch World Cup was set to be one of, if not the biggest event of the entire year. They were set to head out early tomorrow morning in order to catch the portkey that would take them to the campsite.
They were also set to take the portkey alongside their neighbours, the Weasleys. Having grown up in the same area, the two families knew each other well. Riley was even close friends with the youngest child and only daughter of the red-headed family, Ginny Weasley.
Despite being in two separate houses at Hogwarts, the two girls regularly hung out while at school and even sometimes during breaks.
Hopping from her bed, Riley moved over to her record player. Looking over the vinyl records that were packed on the shelf below the audio sound system, she decided to play one of her new favourite bands. Green Day.
She had discovered the American rock band during a family outing to one of the surrounding villages. When the Diggory's had popped into a cosy little shop, that appeared to sell every sort of trinket, Riley's attention had been drawn to the select amount of records that the shop had on display.
As she looked over the vinyls, one stuck out to her more than the rest. A black cover with a white hand holding a red heart-shaped grenade. The name of the band and album were written in the corner.
She wasn't sure what drew her to the vinyl, but something inside her was captivated by the simple design of the record.
Since there was a record player next to the small collection of vinyls, she decide to play the disk. Almost instantly her ears were hit with the sound of drums and guitars before the lead vocalist began singing.
The song was louder than the ones she typically listened to, but the beat of the song enticed her even more.
Safe to say, after listening to the record Riley ran to her parents and all but begged them to buy it for her. Which they of course gave into, unable to say no to their daughter when she pulled her best pleading expression.
Carefully placing the vinyl record onto the turntable, Riley gently lowered the needle onto its grooves. As the music filled the room, she leaned back onto her bed, captivated by the vibrant sound emanating from the record player.
Amaia curled up into her side, purring as the feline made herself comfortable.
For the rest of the afternoon, and into the night as well, Riley hung out in her room soaking in the peace and quiet that idled around the Diggory house. Especially since tomorrow, she would be in the boisterous environment of the Quidditch World Cup.
