Rest
Kosu's team pushed onward through the dense, foreboding forest, but their path was repeatedly blocked by wave after wave of goblin ambushes.
"They're relentless!" Kara, the team's mage, panted, her robes singed from a close call with a goblin's crude blade. "We can't keep this up much longer."
Kosu gritted his teeth, his sword arm weary from endless clashes with the swarming goblins. "I know. We need to find a defensible position to regroup and catch our breath."
As if on cue, the telltale screeches of goblins echoed through the trees, signaling another impending attack. Kosu quickly scanned their surroundings, searching for a suitable location to make a stand.
"There!" he shouted, pointing to a small clearing ahead. "That looks like it could work. Everybody, move out!"
The team hustled to the clearing, taking up defensive positions as the goblins burst forth from the underbrush. Kosu and the fighters formed a wall of steel, while Elara and Kara unleashed a barrage of arrows and magic.
Though they fought with discipline and skill, Kosu could see the exhaustion weighing on his comrades. Their movements were growing sluggish, and their attacks lacked the ferocity of their earlier clashes.
Finally, the last of the goblins fell, and Kosu raised a hand to halt any further pursuit.
"Take five, everyone," he said, his voice rough. "We need to regroup and figure out our next move."
As the team collapsed to the ground, Kosu activated his communicator, patching through to their headquarters, his fingers moving with practiced urgency.
"This is Kosu," he said, his tone grave.
After a brief crackle of static, a familiar voice responded. "Kosu, this is Sakura. I'm receiving your transmission. What's your status?"
Kosu's brow furrowed with concern. "Sakura, we've encountered heavy resistance from the goblins, far more than our intel suggested. They seem to be using some kind of coordinated ambush tactics to wear us down."
He paused, looking around at his weary team. "Our resources are depleted, and we need further guidance. Please advise."
Sakura's voice grew tense. "Kosu, the situation has become more dire than we anticipated. I will report it right away to the Guild Master. I understand the urgency, but you and your team need to be extremely cautious."
Kosu listened intently, his grip tightening on the communicator.
"The good news is that we've managed to send you a supply of healing potions and a set of protective scrolls," Sakura continued. "The scrolls can create a barrier that will help restore your team's mana and stamina. Find a defensible position, activate the scrolls, and take the time to recover before pushing forward."
Kosu felt a wave of relief wash over him. "Understood, Sakura. That's exactly what we need right now. Can you provide any other intel on Thorn's team?"
Sakura's reply was laced with worry. "I'm afraid we've lost contact with them. Thorn's team has not reported in, and we're unable to establish communication with them. We suspect they may have been cut off or..." She paused, the unspoken implication hanging heavy in the air.
Kosu steeled his resolve, his eyes hardening with determination. "Acknowledged, Sakura. We'll use the potions and scrolls, find a safe place to rest, and then push forward to locate Thorn's team. Kosu out."
He turned to his battered but steadfast companions, holding up the small pouch of healing potions and the scrolls Sakura had mentioned.
"All right, team, listen up. Sakura has provided us with some much-needed supplies to help us recharge. We're going to find a defensible position, activate the protective scrolls, and take the time to rest and recover our strength. Once we're ready, we'll push forward to locate Thorn's team and get them out of here. Understood?"
The team members exchanged determined glances, and Kosu could see the renewed fire in their eyes. They quickly scanned the surrounding area, searching for a suitable spot to make their stand.
"There," Elara said, pointing to a small, elevated clearing ahead. "That looks like it could work. It's defensible, and we should be able to see any approaching threats."
Kosu nodded. "Excellent. Everyone, let's move out. Stay alert and keep your weapons ready. We can't afford any more surprises."
The team carefully move to the safe place Elara pointed.
Kosu carefully examined the protective scrolls provided by Sakura, his brow furrowed in concentration. He held up one of the scrolls, its parchment glowing with arcane symbols.
When he's about to tear the scroll to active the magic inside it, he was stopped by Kara, a magic expert of the team. "Wait, leader! Let's me take a look at it first!"
Kosu turned to Kara, "Kara, what do you want to do? From what Sakura told me, we need to activate the scrolls to set up the protective barrier. This should give us a safe haven to recover our strength before we push forward."
Kara brimming with excitement when looking at the magic artifact "If I could take a look at these scrolls, I will make sure we're using them to their full potential! We need to make the most of this respite."
Kosu suprised with the idea, after a moment of thinking, he hand over the scroll to Kara, "Can you do it?"
Kara nodded, her eyes scanning the intricate designs on the scroll. "Hmm, yes, I can see the complexity of these enchantments. Let me study them for a moment."
She sat cross-legged, tracing the symbols with her fingers as she muttered ancient incantations under her breath. The rest of the team watched in silent anticipation, their weapons still at the ready.
After several minutes, Kara looked up, her expression thoughtful. "I believe I understand how these scrolls work now. The barrier they create isn't just a physical shield – it also focuses the ambient mana in the area, channeling it to restore our magical reserves and physical stamina."
She gestured to the perimeter of the clearing. "If we position the scrolls at the four cardinal points, it will maximize the area of effect and ensure the most efficient recovery. We'll be able to rest and regain our strength much more quickly this way."
Kosu nodded, impressed by Kara's insights. "Excellent. Let's set it up immediately. The sooner we're ready, the sooner we can resume our search for Thorn's team."
The team quickly moved to the four corners of the clearing, each member carefully unrolling and activating a scroll. As the shimmering barrier sprang to life, encompassing the entire area, the team members could feel the restorative power coursing through them, easing their aches and replenishing their energy.
Kosu let out a long, relieved breath, his grip on his sword finally relaxing. "Well done, everyone. Now let's take this time to rest and recover. We're going to need every ounce of strength for what lies ahead."
As the team settled down, surrounded by the protective barrier, Kosu couldn't help but feel a twinge of hope. With the scrolls' aid, they might just have a chance of finding and rescuing Thorn's team before it was too late.
As the team hastened to the clearing, Kosu activated the protective scrolls, a shimmering barrier springing up around them. The team members immediately felt the restorative effects, their weariness slowly ebbing away as their mana and stamina replenished.
With a grateful sigh, Kosu sat down, his comrades joining him. "Rest up, everyone. We've got a long way to go, and Thorn's team needs us. But for now, let's take this time to recover our strength. We'll need it for what lies ahead."
As the team members tended to their wounds and sipped the healing potions, Kosu gazed out into the ominous forest, his resolve hardening. They would find Thorn's team, no matter what stood in their way.
