Chapter 1: Shadow Pack

They call me a lone wolf. Maybe I am or maybe I'm not, but I have no pack and I don't have a family. I don't even have a name anymore. I love to run through the forest while I think, which is what I'm doing right now. I love the wind blowing through my silky smooth fur. Hearing nature all around me. Feeling the soft grass under my paws. Seeing animals and their families in their homes. Hearing the growling of other wolves nearby.... Wait! Other wolves!? I stop dead in my tracks as my ears twitch. I can hear them getting closer. I have the ability to turn into a shadow, so as I turn into one and appear on a tree branch, they come into view. I could tell by how big and muscular one was that he is an alpha. The alpha is pure jet black with silky smooth fur. The smaller wolf next to him is a mix between jet black and the color I am right now, which is midnight blue. He looked familiar, but I wasn't sure. All I know is that, midnight blue is a really rare color for a wolf, and only a select few have it.

"How could he have just vanished so quickly?" asked the smaller wolf.

"I don't know, maybe he is of our pack. Shadow Pack could use stealthier wolves," the alpha wolf spoke up this time.

        "Well, so much for that...."

"Yes, I agree. We better get back to the pack." Before they turned around to leave, I jumped down from the tree branch to right in front of them. As I did so, they both stepped back a bit.

"Woah, he....is actually a she?" The smaller wolf asks the alpha.

        "I suppose so...."

"Why were you looking for me?" I asked while growling at them.  They glance at each other then back at me. The smaller wolf swallows the lump in his throat and speaks up.

"First of all, you're in Shadow Pack Territ'ry." He says in a southern accent I didn't notice before.

"And? Is that a crime for a.... southern lone wolf?" I hesitated.

"Lone wolf? There aren't many more lone wolves. Let alone ones from the South," he sneers.

At him saying that, me and the smaller wolf started to growl and snap at each other. And that's when the alpha stepped in between us as he turned to me.

"I'm very sorry for my apprentice here. He's still in training." The alpha said, turning his head back to his apprentice, glaring at him, then back to me with a gentle smile.

"It's fine." As I turn around, I say this looking over my shoulder,"But next time he gets out of line with me, I'll kill him myself before Venom Pack can get their fangs in him first."

That's when I heard a twig snap. Our ears perk up. I sniff the air to smell who or what it was.

"Shadow Pack," I whisper softly, my eyes turn jet black, standing for fear. My eye color changes with my mood. My fur also changes color to what pack I'm in at that time. For example, if I was in Shadow Pack, it would turn black. Fire Pack, it would turn orange-red. Wind Pack, it would turn dark green, etc. etc.

"How does she know it's Shadow Pack?" the apprentice wolf asked, somewhat surprised.

"I don't know. Maybe we'll find out if we---" Before the alpha wolf could finish his sentence, I turn into a shadow and disappear. I appear on a tree branch right above the two wolves I just met. I can't control where I appear once I disappear because I don't have an alpha or mentor to train me to control it, yet.

"---ask her," the alpha finishes his sentence slowly, seeing that I had disappeared. After a bit, the other Shadow Pack wolves that were hunting, descended from behind the trees and bushes. There were about four to eight wolves that descended.

"Hello Whenua. Shadow," a beautiful wolf with darkish-light purple fur and black tribal tattoos all along her left side (including the left side of her face), spoke in a somewhat whimsical voice to whom I'm guessing are Whenua, the Alpha and Shadow, the apprentice.

"Hello Umah. I see you and the other Dark Hunters have not caught any food for the pack yet," Whenua glared at Umah,"Do I need to tell Bralor to derank you, yet again?"

"I'm very sorry Whenua, but you and I both know that food is starting to get scarce now. Especially with Fire Pack hunting so close to our territory."

"That's no excuse. Keep hunting, and don't come back to camp until each one of you finds at least one prey of food. The pack is starving. And we especially need food for the pups if they are to survive and become strong. Remember, pack is strength---"

Damn, that Whenua guy is ruthless. I wouldn't wanna get on his bad side. I bet something really bad would happen....

"---pack is life. I know, I know. See you back at camp."

And with that, Umah and the Dark Hunters left to find food for their pack, and Whenua and Shadow went back to their camp. As I jump down from the tree and start walking to my den, the fur on the back of neck starts to stand on end. I sniff the air to smell if it's another wolf pack. There's a possibility that it could be another rogue or lone wolf. I don't recognize the scent, so I keep walking. This time with caution. I have a bad feeling about this, I thought, glancing around as I walk a little faster.

I was almost to my den when he appeared out of nowhere and attacked me. I got back to my feet to growl at the stranger. We growled and circled each other.

"Who are you and why did you attack me?" My eyes turned red with anger.

He stopped growling with a smirk and said,"Now, is that any way to treat an old friend?" He asks in a low voice.

"You are no friend of mine. I'm a lone wolf that has no friends, family, or pack. Let alone a mate...."

"What happened to you being the pride and joy of the Outcast Pack?" The Outcast Pack was a pack filled with wolves of all kinds of packs that have been exiled. For example there was, Fire Pack, Water Pack, Shadow Pack, Blood Pack, Venom Pack, Wind Pack, Lightning Pack, Thunder Pack, etc. etc.

"The Outcast Pack? How do you know of my old pack?"

        "I was your mate."
