Looking at "Friend, please" by Twenty One Pilots

I feel for you, but when did you believe you were alone?

You say that spiders crawled inside and made themselves a home

Where light once was

Petrified of who you are and who you have become

You will hide from everyone, denying you need someone

To exterminate your bones

Friend, please remove your hands from

Over your eyes for me

I know you want to leave but

Friend, please don't take your life away from me

Living like a ghost you walk by everyone you know

You say that you're fine but you have lost your sway and glow

So I stopped by to let you know

Friend, please remove your hands from

Over your eyes for me

I know you want to leave but

Friend, please don't take your life away from me

Would you let me know your plans tonight?

'Cause I just won't let go 'til we both see the light

And I have nothing else left to say

But I will listen to you all day, yes I will

Friend, please remove your hands from

Over your eyes for me

I know you want to leave but

Friend, please don't take your life away from me

Analysis of Friend, please

In the first stanza of the song, Tyler uses ceusura to show a pause in his speech in the phrase 'friend, please', this could suggest the fact that he is trying to put emphasis on the 'friend' he is trying to look after. The repetition of 'friend please' throughout the song suggests that he is begging the friends that he is looking after and talking to not take their life. Later in the first verse. The idea of sucide is amplified by the 'spiders' because they are dark creatures, often associated with the darkness. In addition, when he writes ' crawled inside' it implies the act that Tyler can see the fact that the friend didn't invite them in. the word 'crawled' could suggest the fact the friend didn't want the spiders - or manifestations of darkness within their mind. Tyler also utilizes light imagery to portray that the friend has lost the 'light' they once had and because the spiders crawled into the friend's head. The adverb 'once' suggests that the light they had before the 'spiders' have invaded their head, has been replaced with dark thoughts and there is no light there anymore.

The use of direct address, supported by the use of 'you' in the song covers a close connection and makes the reader and audience as a whole more invested in the poem, than if Tyler had not used 'you' this is effective because the fact that it makes the audience feel ore connected to Tyler. In addition, the use of the word 'don't' could illustrate to the reader that he doesn't want to lose the friend. In addition to this fact, the word 'don't' is repeated several times, to portray the desperation that he can't lose his friend.

Tyler uses the verb, 'exsterminating' which could suggest the fact that he knows his friend wants to die and wants their bones to be'exterminated', which could imply how as a suicidal person, you don't want to be alive and therefore want to be 'exsterminated' because of you not being able to 'see the light'. He then repeats 'friend please' as another plead to the friend to not take their life away from him. The fact he uses 'friend' to the audience is powerful because of the fact that he sees everyone as one of his friends and wants to save as many as he can.

'Like a ghost' could imply to the reader that Tyler knows that his friend feels like a ghost because they feel. The adjective 'ghost' could describe the fact that the friend feels as though they are unseen as uncared for. In addition, it could suggest that the person feels as though they don't exist and therefore feel like its better for them to be dead. He then writes 'lost your sway and glow' the word 'sway' coupled with the direct address of 'your' creates the effect of the life that they once had growing dim and dark, now that they are depressed. The word 'light' could suggest the fact that the friend - ever since being depressed has lost their light and Tyler wants to help them see it and find a reason to be alive.

The last stanza starts with 'won't you tell me your plans tonight' which could illustrate the fact that he is concerned with the event of his friend possibly committing suicide. The use of the time adjective 'night' suggests tiredness as well as darkness - suggesting that Tyler is more determined to help them because it is night and he knows how bad night can be.

The last line of the poem is critical, because it repeats the idea from the start with the line 'hands over your eyes' the use of 'yours' could suggest the fact that he doesn't want to lose them and he can see their 'hands' are blinding them from seeing the light and finding a reason to live. The song is powerful overall because of the use of direct address and the critical condition it represents the friend in. This is a song that, because of the images presented, it's a great song and will probably save a thousand more likes than it already has.

Well done, Tyler and thank you. From all of us
