The Sky Splits Open

Selene and Elio hurried out of the arena and to the nurse waiting in the foyer of the Battle Dome.

Selene made sure Elio was situated before going to her PC and getting back Nebby. She would reorganize the rest of her Pokémon once Elio was back home.

Selene made her way back over to her friend who was having his hand bandaged up by the nurse. "So Elio, what's the situation?"

Her friend looked back at her and smiled sheepishly. "I'll be alright, just have to be careful. The nurse's Comfey blasted me with a Heal Pulse so I'm not in extreme pain anymore."

Crabrawler looked at its trainer guiltily and then away. "Hey, Crabrawler," Elio said. "It's alright, buddy! You were just excited and my hand'll be as good as new in no time." His Pokémon perked back up and Elio returned the crab Pokémon to its Poké Ball.

The nurse finished wrapping his hand so the two of them walked out of the Battle Dome. People poured out of the arena and the two were able to avoid reporters by blending in with the crowd.

Royal Avenue was currently packed with people so the two trainers slipped off to the fountain and sat down at a bench.

"I'm still not over how stupid you using Crabrawler was." Selene scolded.

The entire match had been a stressful game of defense on Selene's end while Incineroar battled two Pokémon practically on its own.

"Keep in mind, Selene. They had a plan for Incineroar but they didn't know what to do about Crabrawler." Elio reminded her.

Selene wasn't won over. "Sure, but you should've told me." She pointed at herself as she said this. "You can't just go around making major plan changes in a Double Battle Tournament without telling your partner."

Elio sighed. "Yeah, I guess you're right. But we won either way. Hey, wanna get Malasadas?" He asked her.

Selene shrugged. "If you want to, that's fine by me. I figured you had to get back though."

"Nah," Elio assured her. "I took the whole day off. You never know how long these tournaments will last after all."

The duo stood up and started walking to the Malasada Shop. Selene was briefly reminded of the time the two of them had gone to the Royal Avenue while running from Team Skull in Elio's world.

Selene felt something in her bag move and she looked in front of her to see her Rotom Poké Dex was now floating in the air inches from her face.

"Selene! Elio! That match was righteous! Zzzt-Zzzt!" Rotom told them.

Elio chuckled. "Thanks, Rotom. I was wondering when you'd start talking." Rotom floated ahead of the trainers as they strolled down the road and then back to Selene.

"Oh, Selene! You got a message from Drake! I didn't read it but I bet it's pretty wicked!" Rotom Dex informed her.

Selene grabbed him out of the air and went to check the message while Elio raised an eyebrow. "Drake? I haven't heard of this guy before."

Selene felt her face flush red. "While I was at that international tournament a few weeks back I met him and we hit it off. Apparently, he's The Champion of Kalos."

Elio started smirking. "Is he the one who beat you?"

Selene cursed herself. I should've just lied and said I won! "Yes. Anyway, he gave me his number and we've been talking since then."

Elio leaned in. "Oooh, do you like him?" He teased.

Selene rolled her eyes. "Maybe I do. What's it to you?" She responded.

"I'm just curious. We're supposed to be best friends after all." Elio said, backing off slightly. "You're turning fifteen next month so forgive me for being curious."

Selene sighed. "That's rich coming from you. The only girl you've ever liked is Lana and how long did that last?"

Elio looked away. "She really liked fishing and I didn't, we just weren't meant to be. And it's not like I meet many kids my age as a Kahuna."

The friends arrived at the entrance to the restaurant and wrote about to open the door when they heard a low rumbling sound.

Selene wheeled around and looked up at the sky where an all too familiar Ultra Wormhole had appeared. The blue sky was punched open by the white vortex and a large figure was emerging from it.

The creature was almost entirely devoid of color and had two massive arms on either side of its body. It seemed to be made up of some sort of stone that didn't reflect any light.

"What is that thing?" Elio wondered.

Selene narrowed her eyes. "I don't know. But it's an Ultra Beast which means it's no joke." She grabbed Nebby's Poké Ball and stared up at the potential foe.

Rotom shot up and scanned the Pokémon. He gasped as its image appeared on his screen. "T-that's Necrozma! It's an incredibly gnarly Pokémon said to have taken all of Alola's light at one point! Zzzt-Zzzt! This is way mental!"

A ball of light appeared between Necrozma's two hands and it began to fire beams down onto the island from above. Selene felt anger build up in her as her home was attacked.

"That's enough!" Selene shouted and she sent out her Solgaleo. The steel lion appeared in front of them and growled at the target. "Solgaleo use Sunsteel Strike!"

Solgaleo ignited and jumped into the air. It sped right into Necrozma and hit it from below. Solgaleo flew above the Necrozma and turned around. "Now use Flamethrower!"

Flames spewed from Solgaleo's mouth and into Necrozma's body. The attack seemed to do almost nothing to Necrozma, however. Necrozma lunged forward and grabbed hold of Solgaleo.

Solgaleo started writhing in the Ultra Beast's grasp. "Wild Charge!" Selene called to Nebby.

Nebby started channeling electricity through its body and Necrozma was forced to drop it. Selene's Pokémon descended with Necrozma following close behind it.

Solgaleo landed on the ground and Necrozma summoned four gems to its sides. The invading Pokémon fired the gems into Nebby's body and almost knocked it over.

Selene tensed up but Nebby was still standing and shook off the blow. "That's what I'm talking about! Use Sunsteel Strike!"

Solgaleo sped into Necrozma but this time Necrozma tried catching Selene's Pokémon. Necrozma stopped Solgaleo's advance and held it in the Ultra Beast's arms.

Nebby started thrashing about again and began glowing. "What's happening to it?" Elio wondered.

Selene didn't want to wait to find out. "Get out of its hold with Zen Headbutt!" Solgaleo threw its head into Necrozma and was once again let go.

Necrozma seemed to get angrier as it grabbed its head where it was hit. Necrozma began charging another ball and fired it. This time the light energy poured out of the sphere like a geyser and into Solgaleo.

Selene's Pokémon was knocked off of his feet and flung into the fountain which broke apart upon being slammed into. Necrozma continued its advance by firing a cylindrical beam into the wreckage.

It hits so hard! Selene wanted to run right past the Ultra Beast and over to her Pokémon. "Nebby! Nebby are you okay?" She called.

The smoke cleared and Nebby was back on its feet but clearly nearly beaten. It breathed slowly as it faced down its opponent.

Elio nudged Selene on the arm to get her attention. "Selene, that Necrozma thing is trying to do something to Nebby and I don't think you can beat it in battle. We should try leading it out of here and losing it in Ultra Space." He suggested.

Selene looked at the terrified faces of the people watching the battle unfold and nodded. "Nebby run past it and over to us! Then, open a wormhole and run!"

Nebby started running in Necrozma's direction and leaped over its head. A symbol appeared on its head and a portal opened behind Selene and Elio.

"Get ready to jump on!" Selene told her friend. Nebby landed and beelined for the trainers. Necrozma turned around and started to pursue it.

Selene and Elio leaped onto the Solgaleo's side and pulled themselves into its back while Necrozma sped towards the trio.

Nebby barely got into the portal before Necrozma could catch up with them and the Ultra Beast began to pursue them as they entered Ultra Space.

Solgaleo weaved between multiple electric particles and portals while collecting as many energy particles as it could.

Selene could tell Nebby was tired but Necrozma was crashing through the electric hazards without slowing down. "Keep going Nebby! Just a little more and we'll be home free!" Selene encouraged.

Her Pokémon started to speed up and Elio tapped her on the shoulder. "Selene, it's charging another attack!"

Selene turned her head to see Necrozma unleash another one of its light geysers. "Nebby look out behind you!" She screamed.

Solgaleo turned its body just as the attack reached it and it was struck in the side by the move.

Selene and her friend were thrown from Nebby's back while Necrozma neared it. The farther they drifted from Solgaleo, the more hopeless Selene began to feel.

The trainers had no influence over their movements in the space and couldn't stop themselves from moving away.

Necrozma floated up to Solgaleo and placed its hand on Solgaleo's head. Nebby was completely unconscious and unable to resist as it started glowing.

The glow enveloped the two Pokémon but then died down, leaving a heartbreaking sight. Nebby's body was now pulsating with light and covered in parts of Necrozma's body while Necrozma was no more.

Necrozma's arms stuck out of its back and the Ultra Beast's face covered Nebby's like a mask. "NEBBY!" Selene screamed. The Pokémon looked up at her and then summoned a portal that it leaped into.

Selene futilely reached out a hand for her Pokémon but it was no use. "Selene," Elio said. "What do we do?"

Selene looked at her friend. He was terrified but not too far from her. "I don't know." She scanned the area and saw that they were heading for a portal.

The portal's gravity started pulling them in and suddenly a bright light filled Selene's vision.
