It reeked of death in the dark and gloomy hall of Cleopatra's tomb, yet you voyaged on. Years of research and perseverance all built up to this very moment. You were close to obtaining Cleopatra's jewelry box, the "gold of the Nile" was what the archeology community nicknamed it. It was discovered recently that Cleopatra held a secret tomb to keep her valuable secrets away from prying eyes.
You were the first to accidentally stumble upon the ancient map that would reveal the ruins of her tomb. You were more than excited to be the first to discover the very artifact others would kill to discover. But you knew others were bound to follow you into the deep dark and winding path to the tomb. As a matter of fact, you had been followed for a good hour while driving up to the entrance of the ruins.
You only had a measly pocket knife to defend yourself if anything got messy. The thought of using it scared you, as you were far from a violent person.
The walls were damp, and the smell of something rotten pinched your nose, as you held up your only source of light, a tiny lighter, up to the walls, scanning for any hieroglyphics. The walls were a lifeless brown, as you ran a hand against its cold surface, trekking even deeper into the ruins. You feel yourself suddenly step on a pressure plate, the floor around you dissipating. You scream and jump and desperately grab at the bumpy wall, hoping to dear god you could get a grip. With luck on your side, you dangled from the wall, just barely teetering over the edge and into the blackness down bellow. You huff out a sigh of relief and shimmy across the wall until you reach the other side. You weren't ready to give up just yet.
At the end of a hall was a door with an ancient lock. The sight of it didn't even make you flinch. You studied the map and read the legends. You were ready for the moment. You stare down to see three cylinders.
"Ah yes, I just have to rotate these in the right order, and the door will open!" he exclaim excitedly. Not a moment passes before you crack the puzzle, the doors swinging open in a slow and regal kind of way. The room was dark and dust danced around the flame of your lighter. You stare in awe as you enter the room. This was it, the moment you had dreamed of for years....
The pedestal was empty. The pedestal that sat in the middle of the room...was...empty. You feel yourself shake as you drop the lighter, the room going black as the flame is blown out. You want to collapse to your feet and scream out in anger, but you knew that would do no good. How? How could the pedestal be gone? From what you could tell, you were the only person to ever enter the ruins! How could it be gone?!
"Yoohoo!" you hear a voice call through the darkness. Suddenly, a light flickered from out of the darkness behind you. You spin around, slipping out the pocket knife from your belt, gasping out in fear.
"Woah there, calm down" the voice urged. The light was then lifted up to reveal a face. It was a man, with short and slicked back brown hair that danced against the flame's light, and sideburns that made him look like he belonged in the 80's. You could make out his red jacket in the light, and something perched in his monkey-like hands. It wasn't just something...it was The Gold of The Nile. It was a glittery golden box, with a slender sphinx sitting atop the lid proudly. You couldn't have never imagined it to be this beautiful...
"H-how?" you stuttered, stepping back. "The tomb..the tomb it..."
"The tomb was sealed, yes I'm aware" he began, using the flame from his lighter to light a cigarette that was now in his mouth. "It was rather simple. I just followed you, and snuck right past you when you a had little run in with that pressure plate! Then it was easy from there. The puzzle was rather simple to crack".
You take a step forward, pointing a finger at him. "But no one but me knows the correct way to open the door!". The man took a drag of his cigarette and took a step closer, as you stumbled back. "Listen here," he begins. "That stuff is amateur shit. I'm much above any of that"
As he stepped closer, you could see his face in more detail. It all clicked, and you dropped your pocket knife. Those burning passionate eyes, those sideburns, those large ears. You had seen that face once or twice on the news. You knew who this man was.
"Yo-you're that thief...Lupin The Third..." you stuttered.
Lupin smiled widely. "Oh I see, you do know who I am then. No introduction needed!". He puffs out some smoke from his nostrils as he looks down at the jewelry box in his hands. "So, who are you then, and why do you want this, huh?" he mocked.
You clench your jaw and felt for your pocket knife on the ground. "I'm /yn/! And that box was supposed to be my best archeological discovery!" you spat. Lupin raises and eyebrow, his smile growing even bigger. "Oh, I see! You're an archeologist! And this was supposed to be your ticket to the big leagues, huh?"
He waggles the precious artifact in front of you, but draws back before you could snatch it from him. "Ahahah!" he teased. "I got here first, fair and square!"
"That belongs in a museum where people can observe and learn about its origins!" you cried out, running forward and trying to snatch the jewelry box from him. He was much taller than you, so he waggled it over your head as you jumped up and down, desperately grabbing for it.
"And this is for my dear Fujicakes," he retorts. "She's been wanting this for ages!"
The name sounded familiar. You believed she was his love interest. No...from what you remember she was rather manipulative and would always seduce Lupin out of a good steal. "You know it's not gonna win over her heart, she'll take her winnings and leave your sorry ass!" you angrily scoffed, the pocket knife touching your foot as you back away slowly.
His features played into a curious glance, as he makes a confused grunt. "What do you know about my Fujiko, huh? She and I are in love, so she wouldn't do that to me!". You can tell you hit a nerve, and you can't help but smirk, wanting revenge on this monkey-faed bafoon. "She's only in it for the jewels" you laugh. "She doesn't really love you, how stupid are you?"
Lupin glared at you, taking his cigarette from his mouth and angrily stamps it out. "I'm not listening" he says blankly. His smile eventually returns. "Toodles!" he calls out to you, turning and making a run for it. You gawk at him, but bring yourself back to reality. "He-hey! Get back here!" you yelled, tearing down the hall after him. You see the faint glow of his lighter as he jumps the hole in the floor, clearing the other side almost too easily. You stop at the hole, almost teetering down bellow. You catch your breath and angrily cry out as Lupin's faint glow became farther and farther away. You couldn't let him get away, not when you were this close!!
You take a deep breath and step back, getting a running start. As your feet leave the ground, you leap over the hole in a clumsy state and tumble onto the other side. You scrap your knee while hastily getting to your feet, but you have no time for such small inconveniences. It was now pitch black. He was gone. You blindly feel the walls as you jog through twists and turns. Eventually, you can see the faint light of day in the distance. And out on the dunes of the dessert, you can see Lupin running toward a parked yellow fiat, yelling at the driver excitedly.
"No!" you bellow, running out of the entrance to the tomb and toward the fiat. It was too late. The fiat swerved around and drives off into the distance, as you keep chasing it angrily. You fall to your knees in exhaustion, shaking all over.
The very thing you had longed for for years...was now gone forever.

Fumbling with the keys to your apartment, you stick the key into the lock, and open the door, stepping into your room a sweaty and miserable mess. The plane ride home was dismal, as you had bragged to your friends and family about what would soon become your greatest archeological discovery beforehand.
But you lay a mess in your plane seat, trying not to cry as the passenger next to you was confused at why you looked so scuffed up. But you were finally home, and you could cry yourself to sleep without any judging stares. You trudge into your living room, and flop onto the couch face first, letting out a soft little sob. It all could have yours; fame, recognition, praise. But you came back as empty-handed the day you went looking for the jewelry box.
Your cheeks were wet with tears, and your nose was stuffy and red from the many cries and sniffles you released. Burying your face into the couch cushions, you felt exhausted and worthless. You eventually drag yourself into the kitchen and make a bland cup of tea and return to the living room. More than ever, you wanted to play out that dumb scenario where you'd eat a tub of ice cream while huddled up in a soft blanket, drowning out your sorrows with each spoonful you ate. But a cup of tea would do. It was grey outside, just like your emotions. Cuddling up in a soft blue blanket, you mope for a while and gather the strength to turn on the new. The TV was hardly interesting, as the news blabbered on and on about stocks or some kind of implication like that. You sat there for hell who knows how long until suddenly, the TV colorful picture went out, and you were consumed in the gray and musty darkness of your living room, as it started to drizzle outside. You sit confused, searching for your remote to see if you somehow sat on it and turned off the TV.
"Man, you are really taking this whole loss pretty seriously!"
That voice was all too familiar as you turned around, and were met with those same passionate eyes from before. "How did you get in?!" you gasped. Lupin crossed his arms and giggled. "There's such things as window locks, why don't you use yours?". He points to the window across the room, wide open, the curtains blow in the soft wind.
You gawk at him, as he waggles your TV remote in his hands almost teasingly. "How did you?-".
That question felt dumb, knowing he was a master thief. He could see you make that mental note, as he crossed the room, tossing the remote onto the coffee table and flopping down on the couch.
"What do you want?!" you snapped, sitting down beside him. "You already took all my hopes and dreams? What's next, huh?"
Before you can blabber on, Lupin scotches close to you, and slips something from underneath his coat. You gasp and hold the very thing you thought you'd never see again. Cleopatra's jewelry box was in your hands, for the first time. You shake, nearly dropping it as you hug it to your chest. "The Gold of The Nile!" you exclaim, feeling tears prick at your eyes. You wanted to dance about and cheer, but something felt off. You ceased your excitement and glared at Lupin.
"Why are you giving this to me?"
Lupin's goofy expression suddenly turned serious, as his cheeks turned a gentle red. "I thought about the way you looked when I stole it..." he began. "You had this look in your eyes of complete heartbreak. A-and I just couldn't stop thinking about it..."
You suddenly feel your heart beat faster as the blushing thief grabs one of your hands.
"I-I'm sorry /yn/, it seems you need it more than me...". His smile awoke something inside you and sat back, your face red. His glittering eyes met yours and he smiled. "For once, I think Fujiko can wait on me for another extravagant jewel of some sorts."
You can't help but smile as you stare down at the box. "This is it," you whispered excitedly. "I'm gonna finally become a real archeologist."
You stare up at Lupin, your heart suddenly in your mouth. "What can I ever do to repay you, Mr.Lupin?". The thief gave you his famous ravishing smile as he spread out on your couch. "You could give me a kiss."
Your emotions come out in a tidlewave as you pull Lupin forward by his tie and smash your lips atop of his his. He grunts in surprise, but melts into the kiss, grabbing your shoulders gently. You slowly separate your lips from him, and turn red. "I-I'm sorry..were you serious?" you asked embarrassed. "No, but I liked it," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "What can I say /yn/, you're really something"
"You barely know me," you mocked, as he pulled you in slowly for another kiss. His monkeyish hands caress your cheeks as your lips quietly smack together. Lupin The Third, the infamous gentleman, may have just stole your heart. Just moments ago you wanted nothing but revenge on him, yet here you were, the box in hand, and this crook at your side, passionately kissing you.
"For once I think I've found someone more good looking then Fujicakes," he says before going back in to kiss your cheek. You flush red and simper under his kiss. He smelt of cigarettes and red wine. He was warm as you suddenly rest your head in the crook of his neck.
"Why do I feel this way? I barely know you," you sighed, as he gently massaged your shoulders. "Love works in strange ways" he cooed. You stare up into his eyes and shake your hand. "I-I'm not in love with you!" you protest, pushing him away.
"One day, you will" Lupin teased, taking your hand into his and kissing it lightly. He gets up and heads to the open and throws it open. "I'll see you again, /yn/"
He was gone like a flash as the curtain blew over him. You could feel your breath quicken. You go to the window and gently close it, collapsing to the floor, the box still in hand.
He may have returned the box, but along the way, he stole you and your feelings away. Perhaps one day, you would fall for Lupin The Third.
