October Country Part One

The next day, As Selina woke up next to Wednesday, she smiled before she go to the calendar and cross out the day noticed it was Tuesday, October 28th. Her and her sister's dark baptism was coming soon.

Selina went to take a shower, grabbing her robe and going into the bathroom. She get dressed, deciding to wear a beautiful dark black dress with some black ankle boots.

As she was going to make her way down the stairs, she bumped into Sabrina.

Sabrina complimented "Whoa, you look good this morning."

Selina smirked "I always look good. You look good, too."

Selina noticed the box in Sabrina's hand and asked "What's that?"

"A bat came though my room last night."Sabrina said smiling.

Selina tilted her head, her interest piqued. Her voice carried a playful curiosity "Ooh! Do you want me me to bring back to life?"

It was a tempting offer _ more playful than serious _ but it wasn't an idle one. Selina was born with a rare power: resurgence. Unlike the Cain Pit in the yard, which brought things back with a price, her gift left no cost behind. No corruption, no consequence. And only her family knew she possessed it.

Sabrina replied stubbornly "No! I'm going to ask to bury it."

"Ugh. Fine."Selina said as the two walked downstairs and saw Hilda cooking, Ambrose sitting at the table with Zelda and Wednesday.

"Good morning, Aunties, Ambrose, Wednesday."They both said at the same time.

Hilda asked with her warm smile "Morning, darlings. How did you two sleep?"

Zelda replied dryly, lowering her newspaper "Terribly, by the sounds of it. That * was you we heard creeping around at the hour of the wolf?"

Sabrina said, her voice tinged with something subtle _ anticipation, maybe "Now that you mention it, Aunt Zee, I did wake up once or twice."

Selina added with a grin "It's an exciting time... in more ways than one."

Zelda said as she lit a cigarette, the faint curl of smoke winding around her fingers "Hmm, I remember the week before my dark baptism. It felt as if my real life were finally beginning. I barely slept."

Hilda offered kindly, stepping around the table "Rabbit's feet under both of your pillows tonight, you'll sleep like the dead."

"Thank you, Aunt Hilda."Selina told Hilda.

"Your welcome, darling."Hilda said and shook Selina's shoulders and went back to the stove.

Sabrina said bringing the box and tapping it "Speaking of the dead...a bat flew into my room last night. Smashed through one of my windows."

Ambrose said excitedly putting his book down "I'll fix it. The window, not the bat. Oh! Unless you want me to bring it back?"

Zelda told him as he looked disappointed and started reading again "No, Ambrose, we'll have none of your necromancy, thank you very much. Sometimes, dead is better."

Hilda asked "The poor thing. Was it badly hurt?"

Sabrina said "Its wings were broken. I had to... I'm going to bury it in the garden, if that's okay?"

Hilda replied "Certainly. In the pet cemetery by the sundial. There's room there."

"It's an ill omen -- isn't it,  Aunties? A dead bat?"Sabrina asked.

Selina muttered "Definitely for the bat... "

"Did you say the words we taught you?"Hilda asked Sabrina.

Sabrina nodded and said "Absit omen."

"May the bad thing not happen."Sabrina, Selina, Ambrose, Hilda and Zelda all said together.

"You're alright, then."Hilda told her.

Sabrina gently tiptoes into the following conversation as she shared her worries "Of course, between the dead bat this morning, the curdled milk yesterday morning, and the two-headed frog in my  shoe the day before yesterday...and  with my dark baptism only three days  away...I can't help but wonder if the  universe isn't trying to tell me something."

Selina corrected "Our dark baptism. And don't start getting paranoid."

Hilda then bring two cups of green stuff in both Sabrina and Selina's faces.

Selina asked a little grossed out but also excited "What's this?"

Zelda explained with ceremonial clarity "Before the baptism, the temple of your * body needs to be purified. Cleansed of its toxins."

Selina asked curiously "Oh. Right. What's in it again?"

"This is actually milk and eggs and and rosemary and agrimony, a cupful of vanilla and a pinch of John the Conqueror root and... tannis. Uh, and other herbs from my garden."Hilda listed before she smiled quickly and added before walking away "Drink up, darlings."

Ambrose coughed "Don't do it, cousins."

"Ambrose."Zelda scolded him.

Hilda, Zelda, and Ambrose look expectantly at Sabrina and Selina, who have no choice but to gulp-gulp-gulp-gulp...

Zelda said flipping through the book pages "Before you rush off, you need to pick a familiar -- and no, you can't put it off any longer. The Council sent the Registry. I've indicated a few suitable options. There's a handsome hedgehog, a noble-looking owl..."

Selina interrupted as she gestured toward Luna who was drinking her milk "I already have mine."

Sabrina started "About that, Aunt Zelda, and in the interest of civil rights for all, I've been wondering -- instead of picking a familiar out of a book, which is so, I don't know, dehumanizing..."

"Familiars are goblins that have assumed the shape of animals in order to serve their witch-masters. There's nothing human about them."Zelda stated.

"I was wondering: Rather than me picking one, it might be nice if we sort of...both picked each other. "Sabrina said.

"What a charming idea."Hilda smiled.

Zelda said shaking her head "What in Lilith's name are you blathering on about?"

Selina groaned "For fuck's sake, isn't the important thing that Sabrina identifies a familiar, not how she does it? I did it that way and Luna is very loyal."

Zelda nodded and then asked "What about your baptismal name? Have you settled on one yet?"

Selina smiled looking at everyone "I have, as a matter of fact. Hazel Edwarda. The Ha is part is for Auntie Hilda and the Zel is for you, Auntie Zee. And Edwarda is the female version of the name of dad I came up with. I want to honour our father and while mom would always be my mom, the mom love I always had... was you, Auntie Zee and Auntie Hilda."

Aunt Zelda smiled with the satisfaction of Selina's  choice before she stood up and embracing her niece.

Wednesday took notes in a notebook about dark baptism, for his future dark baptism in a month. He wanted to be prepared for his own dark baptism.

Sabrina added "Edwina Diana. Edwina, which is almost Edward, to honor my father, and Diana, to honor my mother. And not just to honor them... to be closer to them. To have them with me and Selina as we walk the Path of Night."

Hilda begins to cry "I wasn't gonna cry. And... I just wish your mom and dad were here to see this, to see you."

"Me too, Auntie."Sabrina murmured.

Hilda said, her voice trembling with love and longing "They would be so proud of you two. They would be so proud of the young women you two are becoming!"

Zelda corrected "Correction, Hilda, they'd be so proud of young witches they are becoming."

The SKY is filled with billowing, grey CLOUDS. Behind the Spellman home, a beautiful old VICTORIAN. Multiple levels, with SEVEN GABLES and a classic wrap-around PORCH.

Sabrina's kneeling on the ground. She's just finished burying the shoe box. It's a tiny FRESH GRAVE surrounded by older ones, near a stone SUNDIAL. Ambrose stands next to Sabrina, in a robe, smoking a joint, nursing a cup of coffee. Selina and Wednesday are also there.

Ambrose asked with a worried expression "Hold a tick, you two are not having doubts, are you, about your dark baptism? Back inside with Madams Jekyll and Hyde, you seemed excited."

Selina scoffed "Don't be ridiculous. I've been so excited for this."

Wednesday agreed "She has been excited for days."

Selina said hesitantly "And I am. But I'm also a little..."

Ambrose tried to reassure her "It's all right to... to be a little nervous. Going into the woods, signing your name in the Dark Lord's book. Even I had butterflies."

Selina questioned her sister "What have you told your normie friends? That you're being transferred to some posh boarding school in Connecticut?"

When Sabrina did not answer, Wednesday then said "You have told them something, I hope. Because it will never be the right time. That's why you must rip this particular Band-Aid off."

Sabrina said, looking at Ambrose "You wouldn't understand, Ambrose, you were born a full witch. You didn't have to say goodbye to half your life, your friends, your boyfriend..."

Ambrose interrupted "The animals are my friends."

Sabrina stated "All I'm saying, Ambrose, is that  it's easier for someone who's been  a full-witch from birth."

Ambrose told her "True, but afterwards, when you're a full-witch... You'll stay younger longer. You'll get to cultivate your gifts at the Academy, not helter-skelter lessons from Baby Jane and Auntie Mame in there. You'll amass wealth, and power, and influence. You'll belong, Cousin, in every sense of the word. Hell, you'll be a member of the Church-of-the-mother-fucking-Night, the oldest, most bad-ass coven in the country. One day, you might even be High Priestess -- the way your father was High Priest -- wouldn't that be a turn of the screw?"

Sabrina asked him, her eyes narrowing at him "Ambrose, are Hilda and Zelda paying you to woo me to the darkside?"

Ambrose said shaking his head "Me? No, they pay me to embalm bodies. And to rob the occasional grave.  But to woo you? Nope. They just know what it's like. Last-minute cold feet? It's to be expected."

Sabrina admitted "All those things you said, Ambrose... I want them, I do, I just... It's dumb. You're only supposed to start missing things after you say goodbye to them, right?"

Ambrose scolded Sabrina before walking away in disappointment "I've been under house arrest with our aunties for the last 75 years, Sabrina. Forbidden from leaving these grounds. I am continuously missing everything."

Wednesday and Selina went after Ambrose.

Wednesday asked Ambrose "Why have you been under house arrest for the last 75 years?"

"I almost blow up the Vatican."Ambrose answered.

"You have to tell me about it! It's a story I want to hear."Wednesday said, eager to learn about it.

Ambrose smirked and decided to tell Wednesday about it.

Selina smiled, she was glad that Wednesday was getting alone with her cousin. While she decided to let the two talk, Selina went to talk with her aunties about something important. Nevermore.

"Aunties, I have something to ask."Selina said.

"You don't have doubts on your dark baptism, do you?"Zelda asked worriedly.

"Of course not. I wanted to request after my dark baptism and signing my name in the Book of the Beast, I wonder if it was possible for me to attend both the Academy of Unseen Arts and Nevermore? I mean Nevermore is also a school for Outcasts and none of the students are normies."Selina wondered.

"We will try to find a solution. You almost gave me a heart attack for a moment."Zelda stated.

"We could send a letter to the Church of Night and wait for their answer."Hilda suggested.

"To who, Hilda?"Zelda asked.

"The High Priest of the Church and he might take our request in consideration."Hilda responded.

"That is actual a great idea."Zelda said nodding.

"Thank you, aunties."Selina smiled gratefully.

Zelda told her "We know that Nevermore means a lot to you."

Hilda added "So we will try to make sure you can attend both schools."

Zelda said "Making you attend to Nevermore was the best thing we've ever made for you. You become such a strong woman who is more connected to the witch and Outcast world because of it."

Selina smiled "I guess I am. I mean I was never really connected to the mortal world the way Sabrina was. I mean all my friends are Outcasts."

Zelda nodded and added "And I like your new boyfriend. He's better than the last one. Intelligent, sharp and someone from our kind. Your last boyfriend was a fool and what kind of name Kent is?"

"You are right. But I am happy with Wednesday. More happier than I could ever been when I was with Kent. Kent was never was there for me the way Wednesday is and being with Wednesday, I am glad. I mean with him, it's a new adventure every day. I love him so much."Selina admitted.

"I am glad. It's all I want for you. To be happy and powerful and strong."Zelda smiled.

While they hugged, they did not know Wednesday had heard it all and he was smiling.
