~12~
We start to walk down, seeing Indra and a few others waiting at the bottom.
"All my enemies in one place." Roan mutters
"Who are they?" Clarke asks
"The war chiefs of the Trikru alliance" I tell her
"She was supposed to be alone" Clarke murmurs
"Didn't expect her to be." I reply, and we keep moving.
"You murdered our people. You burned our villages. Yet you have the nerve to come here in the name of peace" Indra snaps at roan
"Not peace. Survival. You try to take this bunker for yourself, yet here I am, willing to talk." Roan responds
"The Tirkru alliance holds the temple. Of course you're willing to talk." Indra counters
"And the Azgeda alliance surrounds it. None of your people will get inside unless we come to terms" roan says
"This war is inevitable." Indra says, her voice hard.
"The only thing that's inevitable is Praimfaya. In six days, anyone who is not in this bunker will be dead." I tell them
"Then we should get to it." A Trikru war chief mutters
"Roan" Clarke says
"We talked. Now we fight" roan replies
"No. There is room with 1,200 people in here. We could share it equally. All of the clans can survive. That's what Lexa would've wanted" Clarke pleads
"You're right. She would have. But she isn't here. So war it is" Indra snaps
I knew what I had to do.
"I call for a summit in the throne room." I say, my voice cutting through the tension. Everyone turns to me.
"Heda what-" a Trikru war chief begins
"Quiet! I've heard enough. Everyone in the throne room, or you all die" I command, then turn and walk out.
Once all clan leaders are assembled, I rise from my throne.
"I didn't want it to come to this. But you all thrust for blood that has already been paid. You want war when we are so close to peace and survival! You've dishonored the legacy of Heda. You've dishonored me. Fighting a war is not the way to decide who enters the bunker. But if it's blood you want......I call for a conclave." I spoke, my voice carrying.
Whispers ripple through the room.
"One final conclave. One champion per clan. One death instead of thousands. Whoever wins decides who survives in the bunker- or if only their clan will. The choice is theirs" I declare, stepping into the center, hand extended.
"To the victor goes the spoils" Indra says, placing her hand on mine
"Trikru is in." She nods
"Azgeda is in" roan says, joining us. One by one each clam pledges their champion.
I turn to Clarke, who hesitates.
"Will you fight, or will you burn?" I ask. She swallows hard, then nods.
I walk up to Clarke and Bellamy, who are speaking quietly.
"There no way we can win" Bellamy mutters, looking down from the edge.
"Hey, we fight or we die" Clarke replies firmly. They turn to see me.
"I'm sorry it had to be this way. They wanted blood. They wanted a war. This was the one way to save thousands." I tell them
They nod, understanding.
"Only...we know we won't win. Without guns, no one is trained in single combat- except-" Bellamy starts
"Octavia? I know." I nod outside
At the moment, Octavia rode in on her horse, eyes fierce.
"Everyone deserves a chance to survive" I tell them, walking closer.
I look down at Octavia.
"I'm here for the war" she announces
Bellamy and Clarke move to speak with her. I stay back, staring out at the city already turning into a battlefield. I let out a sigh, hands on my head.
"They listen to you." Someone says. I turn to see Bellamy.
"What do you mean?" I ask
"You said you couldn't lead, that they don't respect you. But they are. They could've started the war anyway- but they didn't, because you ordered them not to. You finally see yourself as Heda... and now they do to" he explains, walking over.
"Guess you were right, huh?" I laugh
"Guess I was" he smirks
"Octavia will win. She's fighting for something bigger than herself, even if she doesn't realize it yet" I tell him
"I hope you're right" he nods
Time froze. Then he spoke.
"Diana... that day in Arkadia-" he starts but stops
"What, Bellamy?" I ask
"I just...it was real to me. I've thought about it every day. And I know the timing is bad-" he starts
"Bellamy...." I stop him, my heart skipping a beat.
"It was real to me too. Once we're safe in that bunker, we'll talk. I promise" I say. He smiles.
"That's a big promise" he teases
"It's one I'll keep" I reply, squeezing his hand as we look out over the city.
Every part of me wants to stop this. I want Skaikru safe. I want Bellamy, Octavia, Clarke- everyone I call family- to survive. But as Heda, I must do whats right for all the clans.
The voices of the past commanders echo in my mind, telling me love is weakness.
All except one.
And now, I truly believed her.
