One by one, I called the champions onto the stage.
"Octavia Kom Skaikru. Step forward." She walks toward me, clam but fierce
"Accept the sigil of your clan and fight with honor as their champion" I say, placing it around her neck. She steps back into line, taking her place next to roan, Azgedas chosen.
"Ilian kom Trishanakru. Step forward.... Accept the sigil of your clan and fight with honor as their champion" I continue, keeping my glare in check as I hand him the sigil.
"A final conclave. A battle to the death within the walls of polis. These warriors will fight until only one remains. When that warrior collects all of the sigils from the fallen and delivers them to me, they will be declared the victor. This final champion alone will tell us which clans are meant to survive in the crypt of Becca pramheda.
And which clans are meant to perish in Priamfaya. We honor those who fall by the sword, but we follow the one who wields it best." I announce
"That would be me" a voice calls from the crowd. Luna steps forward.
"I'm Luna kom flokru. And I'm the last of my clan." She says
"We know who you are- the natblida who ran from her conclave." Gaia notes
"I'm not running from this one." Luna replies. I hand her the sigil.
"Accept this sigil Luna kom Flokru, but with your clan gone who will you fight for?" I ask
"I fight for no one. I fight for death. When I win, no one will be saved." She declares, eyes hard.
I stand in my place, high above the battlefield.
"May the conclave begin" I say, nodding to a scout, who blows the horn.
Less than ten minutes later, a scout whispers who has fallen.
"The first two champions have fallen." I announce. Eyes snapped to me.
A scout extinguished two candles as I spoke.
"Gael kom Ingranronakru. Your fight is over. Fio kom Trikru. Your fight is over" I say
I watch as people's head hung low, Gaia embracing Indra.
One by one, the fallen are reported. From my balcony, I see another champion fall to an arrow- and even from the distance, I recognize it as Azgeda. Roan had chosen other weapons. My gaze sweeps the throne room. Echo isn't here.
"Gaia, take over until I return. I need air" I tell her. She nods as I slip outside.
Night falls. I move silently across the battlefield toward where I saw echo fire the arrow. A spy or not, I am Heda. Hidden, I overhear:
"I should've known you two couldn't stay away. I heard you all the way down the street. You're lucky I wasn't a scout." Roan says, sword at Bellamys throat.
"I came to stop her." Bellamy says
"Explain yourself" roan demands
"I was only trying to help save our people." Echo says
"I am not my mother. I'm not willing to cast aside honor for power." Roan says
"No one has to know." Echo pleads
"You misunderstand. I will not allow your dishonor to give Luna an advantage, and you will not shame our clan ever again. You are Azgeda no more." Roan declares
"Sire wait-" echo begins
"You're banished echo. And when I win this conclave, make no mistake, there will be no place for you inside that bunker. Now get out of my sight, and off this battlefield without being seen. And know that you are the cause of the death of our people." Roan says, and echo hesitates before slipping away.
"If you're going to kill me, get it over with." Bellamy says
"I take it by your presence here, that your sisters still alive." Roan replies
"That's right." He nods
"If I call for a scout, she'll be executed right now. But what fun would that be? You really think she can win, don't you?" Roan asked
"I wouldn't count her out if I were you. She's survived harder things than this." Bellamy answered
"Before she dies, I'll tell her she's lucky to have you as a brother." Roan says
"I got a better idea. After she guts you and before you die, you tell her I was the lucky one." Bellamy shot back, then leaves.
I return to the throne room. Gaia fills me in.
"Only four warriors remain. Roan, Luna, Guara, and Octavia." She says, and I nod.
Rain begins, black and thick. I wonder if Luna with falter from the radiation in her veins. A scout reports:
"Roan kom Azgeda. Your fight is over" I announce
The doors swung open. Octavia enters, soaked in blood, and tosses me the collected sigils. I glance over them, hiding a smirk.
"Octavia kom Skaikru is victorious." I declare, pride threading my voice.
"The crypt of the first commander belongs to her and her people." Gaia adds
"No." Octavia interrupts, and murmurs ripples through the crowd. She meets my gaze and I nod for her to continue.
"I wasn't fighting for Skaikru today. I thought I was fighting for myself, but I now know that's not true either. I was fighting for all of us. Skaikru will not take the bunker alone. We will share it equally because we are equal. We are one clan, and we will survive Praimfaya together. Together" she proclaims
"Let it be declared: 100 from each clan, as the champions decreed. We are now Wonkru. Together!" I say
"Together!" The crowd chants
Octavia smiles at me. I step toward her as her body begins to give out. I catch her before she falls.
"You are a true warrior, Octavia. Lincoln would be proud of you. I know i am" I say, and she hugs me.
Marcus approaches.
"There won't be enough room for all our people." He says
"It's unity day, Kane" she replies, tears streaking her face. Then she looks around the room.
"Where's my brother?" She asks. My heart sinks- he isn't here either.
