Abby's voice cracks through the hall, ragged with exhaustion. She and jackson are at it again, her crying, words tumbling out sharp and desperate. I linger at the doorway long enough to hear her spiral, then turn on my heel.
"Where are you going? I thought you said Abby is the key" jade asked me
"Oh, she's the whole ball game, the Super Bowl if you will. And if we're gonna win, I need a better coach." I reply
I dont wait for reaction- I just keep walking.
The tavern smells like rotgut and bad decisions. Murphys hunched over the table, glass in hand, expression already half-way checked out. He glance at me, waves half-heartedly, and goes back to his drink.
I slide into the seat across from him.
"Penny for your thoughts?" I ask
"What's a penny?" He mutters, then downs another drink.
"Something from my time." I answer, studying him.
His eyes flicker, narrowing.
"Let me guess. Bellamy convinced you that we should leave paradise and take our chance in hell?" He asked
"Why would I leave my home? That's it, fill in the blanks, Murphy" I say smoothly
The way he freezes- just a second- tells me everything.
"That's the second time you've called me-" he trailed off
I stare past him, at my picture. He follows me gaze, then back at me.
The blood drains from his face.
"Okay, before you freak out and raise your voice, I have a question for you." I say
"You're not Diana" he whispers, voice breaking. Tears threatened but don't fall.
I almost roll my eyes. The dramatics.
"I'm gonna be honest with you. Diana's dead. My parents killed her and brought me back." I smile
He jumps up, almost looking...heartbroken? God, these people and their emotions.
"My question is...how would you like to be immortal too?" I ask sweetly
A long pause. His jaw flexed. Then:
"I'm listening" he said
Later-
"So Diana is the commander." I say, twirling a strand of hair.
"Yes. I told you. Abby made me pump ontaris heart with my bare hands so she wouldn't bleed out. Kind of gross" he said
"Kind of badass, if you ask me." I replied
"I didn't, but thank you" he mutters, pushing my hand down. His eyelids droop, head sinking.
"Hey, I'm offering you immortality, a chance at god hood, and you can't keep your eyes open?" I say
He yawns.
"Well, even gods need to sleep. Why don't you, by the way?" He asks
"Sleeplessness is common the first few nights in a new host. You can sleep when you're dead, which will be never unless you've changed your mind" I flash the drives in front of him.
"I haven't" he said
"Good. Now wake up and show me how to be Diana enough to fool everyone and especially Abby because no nightblood, no drives." I say
"Fine, lighting round. What card do you play when Abby's on her high horse?" He asks
"The dark year. Cannibalism. Yum" I answer
"When you want to sprinkle on some shame?" He asks
"Addiction." I reply
"Inspiration?" He asks
"Uhh- Diana in mount weather. Diana in the city of light. Diana staying behind so that you guys could go to space- which was fairly awesome, by the way." I answer
"Yeah, unless you got in her way. Okay, you've softened the ground. She's ready to break. Take the kill shot." He said
"She followed and trusted Blodreina. And now I'm asking for her to follow and trust her Heda." I smirk
Murphy actually grins.
"Not bad. Maybe you do pull this off." He said.
We clink glasses.
Then- screaming. Loud, sharp, slicing through the walls.
Murphy winced.
"That would be Madi, oh you know, your kid. Consider it a dress rehearsal" he said
I sigh, stand, and head for the stairs. He reaches for the drives, too slow.
"Uh-uh. Easy killer" I snatch them first, slipping them into my pocket.
"First you get me past Abby. And then I wipe my friends." I say
Madi thrashes in her bed, sweat dripping down her temple. I move to wake her, but Gaias hand slams against my arm.
"No, no, no. She's having a dream just like you did when you were Haiplana. Don't interfere" she said
"Well, I'm not gonna let her suffer. Hey, wake up" I shake her shoulder.
Madi jolts up, gasping.
"Mom?" She mumbles
Then jumps into my arms.
"Yep, that's right. I'm here. It was just a nightmare" I said
"No...it was a dream." She says
"It wasn't real" I tell her
"You know that's not true. It is real for her. And you also know ripping her out could permanently damage her." Gaia cuts in
"But it didn't, did it Madi?" I counter
Gaias glare burns.
"You know what you just did-it's happened to you, Heda" she snaps
"I'm fine. Okay? I'm just tired." Madi mumbles, curling back into bed.
"Get some rest. We should go" I said, turning to Gaia.
She hesitates.
"Now" I add
Finally, she follows.
Murphys waiting at the bottom of the stairs, shaking his head.
"Shut up. Let's start again" I mutter
I tavern fills- echo, Emori, Raven. Murphy jolts awake as I kick his foot.
"It wasn't me" he mumbles
"Pull it together. Show time." I whisper quickly
"Family meeting. Where's Bellamy and Clarke?" Echo asks, settling down.
"Why? What's wrong?" I ask smoothly
"We ran into Jordan. Is it true? They're immortal?" Emori asks
"I'm sure he made it sound worse than it really is." Murphy says
"They're murderers and body snatchers. How much worse could it get? We're out of here" Raven snaps, already half out of her seat.
"Hey, hey, slow down. Where are we gonna go?" Murphy throws his hands up.
"Murphy's right. The plan doesn't change. We stay. Learn as much from them as we can so we can build our own compound. Bellamy's out scouting a location as we speak." I chime in
"He went without anyone?" Echo frowns
"This whole body snatching thing really lit a fire. He's out with a forging party. You guys were still with ryker. I tried to go but he told me to stay and keep watch." I reply
"Wait a second, back up, Diana. You expect us to continue to play nice?" Raven snaps
"We do still need Ryker to tell us how to bend the radiation field." Emori says carefully
"No, I'll figure it out myself." Raven answers
"Raven, I know this is hard, but we've all done things we're not proud of to survive" I tell her
"I haven't." She snapped.
Then sighed.
"Fine, I'll try" she mutters, stomping away.
"I'll go with her. Make sure she doesn't start a war." Emori presses a kiss to Murphy and follows.
"I'll go after Bellamy. We need to stay in twos. It's not safe for him to be out. You guard here, I'll make sure he doesn't get himself killed" she leaves before I can stop her.
Murphy exhales, rubbing his face.
"Echos going to be a problem." He mumbles
"I'll send jade to keep an eye on her" I say, rising.
"Yeah, back to Bellamy. There is no forging party, is there?" His gaze sharpens
"Sure there is. Every morning. He's just not on it. He found out that I wasn't Diana." I answer
"I swear to God if you killed him-" he starts
"I didn't. But I will if I have to." I answer, grinning.
"You don't get it. If Bellamy knows that Diana is dead, then of all this was for nothing. He may as well just kill himself now." Murphy said
"That seems a tad impulsive. I was thinking of giving it till second moon. That's when the forging part comes back, and they find out I was lying. You have until then to get him on the side of the angels." I shrug
"The angels being us?" He asks
"We're all the hero in our own story, Murphy. Come on, I'll take you to him." I say
I pause at the door.
"Follow echo" I tell jade, then keep walking.
