~3~
I trailed the group to the river that marked our border. From my perch in the trees, I saw Octavia jump into the water. The beast struck fast, pulling her under as the rest of them yelled. But they managed to pull her out with only a wound to her leg. She was lucky, I've seen that thing do much worse.
They stayed put after that, shaken, building a fire as night fell. I remained above, hidden in the branches, watching their laughter fade into nervous silence. My grip tightened on my spear I had stashed there. If they tired to cross, I would have to stop them. No one goes into Mount weather territory, especially not on my watch.
By morning, they gathered near the edge again. Finn toyed with a rope, but in the end, it was jasper who stepped forward, ready to prove himself.
My jaw tensed as he swung across, landing on the far side. Cheers erupted from the others.
That was when I acted.
My spear flew true, striking him in the chest just off his heart. Not fatal, not enough to silence their joy in an instant. Their cries filled the air before they ran off.
And then I saw them, Trikru scouts emerging from the trees, dragging his body away. Exactly as Lexa must have ordered. I clenched my fists, torn between duty and pity, but there was nothing more I could do.
It was time to return to polis.
"Heda I must speak with you privately" I said entering her chambers. The guards stepped aside as she nods.
Her eyes flicked with concern.
"Are you hurt? What's happened?" She asks
"No. I have information. Much information" I tell her
"Then speak" she nods
I told her everything I had seen- their numbers, their names, their strange devices. I told her if the boy with the gun, whose name still tugs at my memory, the girl called Clarke, the chancellors son.
When I finished, Lexa studied me in silence, her gaze heavy but not unkind. I bowed my head and left her chambers, my thoughts restless.
Back in my own room, I tore through the pile of books and sketches I kept locked away. At last, at the bottom, I found what I needed: the pages I had drawn as a child, long ago on the Ark.
I sat in my chair, holding the necklace at my throat as I flipped through the notes meant to preserve a past I had nearly forgotten. And then I saw him.
A boys face, carefully drawn in a child's handwriting.
I pulled today's sketch from my satchel- the face of the guard I had seen among the delinquents. I laid them side by side.
The same boy.
Bellamy.
The one who had given me this necklace, sixteen years ago.
"Shit" I mumble under my breath, eyes sharp as they landed on my drawings.
"You have more to explain I see" Lexa says entering my room
"Maybe" I admitted
Days passed. Scouts returned with more reports, but still my thoughts lingered on what I had discovered. I knew Lincoln was among the scouts, and more than that- he was my friend. My brother. If anyone would give me the truth I sought, it was him.
"Lexa I need to speak with Lincoln" I told her firmly
"Why? The scouts return today. Ask them" she reply's
"You know why. Lincoln will not only report- he will tell me what I need to hear. I trust him" I answer
Her gaze hardened some
"Very well. But Diana- remember what I've told you. Love is weakness" she tells me
"Yet we love each other" I counter
"We are sisters. That is different. But mark my words: love is weakness." She tells me
I have a small nod, as I felt my heart almost rebel the thought.
Once I had made it back to Trikru, I found Lincoln near the tree line, raising a fog horn.
"There is no fog" I said approaching him
He turned, guilt flickering in his eyes.
"There's much to explain" he says truthfully
"Then explain on the way. I'm coming with you" I say shouldering my gear
He hesitated, then nodded.
"Hurry." He says
We jogged through the forest, his words tumbling out between breaths until we reached his home.
"You're telling me there's a girl inside?" I asked stopping
"Yes" he answered simply
I glared at him.
"You took her without order from Heda- or from me?" I asked firmly
"We can trust her" he said quietly
"I don't trust her" I answered
"Then trust me" he reply's
He held my gaze until I exhaled sharply.
"You had to make it difficult. Fine. Let me gather my things" I sigh placing my bag down.
While he went inside, I adjusted the knife's to my side. My sword to my back.
But when I stepped through the doorway, the sight that met me made my blood run cold.
Sky people surrounded Lincoln's body as he lay slumped, unmoving. My hand went to my sword, but before I could act, Lincoln surged up and drive the blade into one of them.
I rushed forward, but a heavy blow struck the back of my head.
The world spun- and then went black.
