~7~
The day was long. Too long.
The guards hadn't been back in over eight hours, which meant only one thing- Bellamy. I didn't know how, but I knew he was the cause of the chaos echoing outside these walls.
Then a voice came.
"My fellow citizens, this is your president speaking...." It said
Cage Wallace. His smooth, rehearsed voice filled the entire mountain.
He talked about their home, their dream of the ground, the bone marrow "cure". Tsings research. His people suffering. He turned our blood into salvation and painted us as murderers standing in the way of paradise.
"The 44 criminals that irradiated level 5 killing 15 of our people..." he spoke
My hands curled into a fist.
"If youre truly want to end the blood treatments once and for all, then the 44 murderers you're now hiding are key to doing that. You have one hour to turn them in without punishment. After that, we'll be forced to consider you enemies of the state" he continued
The speech ended with a promise:
"We're almost home" he said
I slammed my fists against the cage so hard my knuckles almost spilt.
"I'll kill you, you son of a bitch!" My voice cracked against the steel
"Bellamy!" I scream his name again and again, praying he could hear me through the chaos.
But time held together, and so did I. My body was getting weaker by the hour. I wasn't going to make it another day. Not like this.
Was this really how it ended? In a cage, drained dry, nameless in the dark?
I felt myself slipping under when the lock clicked.
"Diana? Hey-hey I need you to wake up" a voice pulls me out
My eyes fluttered open. Blurred edges. A familiar voice.
"...Bellamy?" I muttered
"Yeah, it's me. I'm getting you out. We're all getting out" he answered
He pulled me carefully from the cage. Every movement sent fire ripping through my muscles, but I refused to make a sound.
"What did they do to you?" I heard him mutter under his breath
But I said nothing.
"What's happening?" I asked
"We're getting out" he said firmly, like sheer willpower could make it true.
"You did it?" I questioned, and he nodded once.
"Maya- help her get dressed" Bellamy ordered
A girl stepped forward with clothes.. I stiffened until Bellamy added.
"She's with us" he said
That was enough. I let her help me. The fabric scratched against my raw skin, but it was better than being bare. She slipped a knife into my hand. My fingers curled around it instantly. Steep. Familiar. Mine.
As I did, I glanced around the room. Two other people, jasper, and Monty. I remembered them.
I glanced back over at Bellamy. His eyes meeting mine, he gave me another nod. As it telling me I could trust them too- and again, that was enough.
By the time I was dressed, I managed to stand, swaying but upright.
"Fill me in" I said as we moved.
Bellamy slid under my arm, taking some of my weight. Normally, I would've shoved him off. But right now? Pride was a luxury we didn't have. So I let him help.
As we walked, he started talking- quick, clipped. About the chaos he'd unleashed, about, Clarke, about the others. About the plan. Every word stitched me back together, piece by jagged piece.
Because of Bellamy had done something impossible and torn a hole in mount weathers walls.... Then maybe, just maybe, I wasn't done fighting yet.
By the time Bellamy finished explaining, we'd reached the harvest chamber- the place where everyone was supposed to be.
But when the door swung open, the cages were empty. The only thing waiting was a body sprawled on the floor.
Mayas scream tore through the silence as she ran to him. Her father. The one who had risked everything to help us.
I forced myself to look away, stepping beside Bellamy toward the edge of the chamber. Every cage- empty. Every chain- hanging loose.
"Where is everyone?" I asked
Bellamy jaw tightened. He didn't have an answer either.
The door creaked open behind us. My head snapped around. A guard stepped in, weapon raised- until his eyes landed on me.
"You" he pointed straight at me.
Bellamy shoved his gun into the man's face, but the guard didn't even flinch. He just lowered his own weapon, gaze locked on me.
"Your commander made a deal with the president. Your people have been let go. You're apart of that deal. I will lead you out- but I walk unharmed" he said
My blood ran cold.
"What kind of deal?" I questioned
"The sky people get left. The rest of you are free." He answered
I flicked a look at Bellamy. His lips pressed into a hard line. He didn't like it anymore than I did.
The guard stepped closer.
"I can take you to the door, but if we don't go now- you're trapped here just like them" he said
"Drop the gun and I'll go" I said evenly
"Diana-" Bellamy started but I lift my hand to silence him.
The man smirked, smug, and tossed his gun to the ground. He thought he'd won.
I moved beside him. Looked him dead in the eye. Then I drove my knife straight into his chest.
"To hell with the deal" I whispered as he crumbled.
When I turned, every eye in the room was on me- wide, stunned.
"You didn't-" Bellamys voice broke in disbelief.
"You saved my life. What kind of leader would I be if I left you to die?" I cut him off. My voice was steady, colder than steel.
I ripped my knife free and wiped the blade clean on the guards shirt.
"Time for a new plan" I spoke
And just like that, we started moving again.
