We moved together, Bellamy bracing me as we reached the tunnel doors. My legs threatened to give out, so I leaned against the wall while he kicked the door open, gun raised.
On the other side, Clarke and Octavia stood frozen.
"Bellamy" Octavia breathed before throwing her arms around him.
"I knew it." She laughed, pulling back just enough to look at Jasper and Monty.
"You two were too scrawny to drill" she hugged them tight, relief written all over her face.
Then maya slipped through. Clarke stiffened immediately, ready to push her back, but jasper jumped in.
"It's all right. She's with us" he said
I watched them reunite- hugs, smiles, a rush of whispered plans- before I finally decided to make my entrance.
I stumbled through the doorway, leaning against the frame, and all their eyes land on me.
"Yes, yes, I'm still here and alive. Barely. Now, unless you want me to die right here we need a plan. Fast." I spoke
"You were part of the deal" Clarke said cautiously
"Yeah well, I turned it down. Didn't seem worth it." My lips curled in a faint smile.
"Now let's focus on finding a new plan while I'm still breathing" I add
Octavia surprised me then- stepping forward, she pulled me into a hug.
"Thank you" she said
"Couldn't leave you just yet" I whispered back
"We need to get to Dante, Maya said he's in quarantine" Bellamy said, but Mayas tank began flashing red, cutting him off. Voices clashed- arguing, panicking.
"Split up. You help Maya. We'll find Dante" I ordered, my tone cutting through the noise.
Octavia nodded sharply.
"Let's move" she led the others away
Bellamy stayed at my side, practically dragging me along. Clarke kept close too, her eyes sharp.
"He's mine when the time comes" I said flatly
"Diana- He helped us. He stays alive." Bellamy shook his head
"He didn't help me when I was strapped to their machines, being carved apart- twice. He's mine" i said, my voice ice
Clarkes eyes flickered to me.
"What did they do to you?" She asked
"Story for another time" I muttered
We entered the room. Dante Wallace stood waiting, calm as ever. I tried to straighten on my own, but my body betrayed me, and I staggered.
"Hello Clarke. Diana" he nodded as if we were old acquaintances.
"Sir, we need your help again" Bellamy said
"It's ok. I took out the camera from the junction box in the hall. We can talk freely" Monty interrupted
"No one's watching anyway. Thanks to you. They're all on level 5." He said
"You're not" Clarke pointed out
"No im not." He said flatly
"Please- We don't have much time. We need a way to get our people out of this mountain without killing everyone." Bellamy pressed
"He's not gonna help us" Clarke cut in bitterly
"You cut the power, risking the lives of everyone in this mountain, my people, even the ones who helped you." Dante said
"We knew they'd be safe on level 5. We made sure not to destroy the turbines so you could repair them. We're the good guys here, not you." Clarke shot back
Dante tilted his head.
"Tell me, if we released your people and theirs, what would've happened to mine?" He questioned
Clarke turned to Monty.
"Can you get us into the command center? We need to see what's happening on level 5." She asked
"No problem" Monty nodded
"Let's go" Bellamy said, stepping towards Dante.
"You're gonna help us whether you like it or not" I said coldly as Bellamy grabbed him by the arm and dragged him along.
Every corner, every hallway, Dante repeated the same line:
"I told you there's no one here." He would say
"Sorry if we don't take your word for it." Bellamy shot back
"Why aren't you with your people on level 5?" I asked
"After what I've done they can be free. I can't. Deliverance comes at a cost. I bear it so they don't have to." He answered
"It wasn't cage. It was your idea to make the deal with the grounders." Bellamy spoke, realization filling his eyes.
Dante gave the slightest nod.
"We're in. Got it" Monty spoke
Then the door swung open.
"It's clear. He's telling the truth" Bellamy said surprised
For once, Dante had told the truth.
The command centers screens flicked on.
"Oh my god" Clarke whispered
On the monitor, Raven writhed on a table as a drill dug into her bone.
"Is that raven?" Bellamy asked, voice tight.
"Mom" Clarke choked, recognizing Abby beside her.
"Tell them to stop now!" Bellamy demanded, shoving a radio into Dante's chest.
"I won't do that" he said evenly
Clarke ripped it from him.
"Carl Emerson. Mount weather. Security detail come in." She said
"Who is this?" A man asked on the other side
"You know who it is" she spat
On the screen, a guard looked up- Emerson.
"Give the radio to the president." She adds
Moments later, Cage Wallace appeared on the monitor- the face burned into my memory, the man who had given me my scars.
"This is president Wallace." Cage said coldly
"I have your father. If you don't let my people go, I'll kill him." Clarke spoke, but I could hear her voice trembling.
"How do I know you have him?" Cage smirked
Clarke shoved the radio at Dante.
"Stay the course Cage" he said
"You won't do it." Cage said firmly
"You don't know me very well" she shot back
"No you won't. I know you enough to know you aren't a murderer" cage said, his voice confident.
Her hand shook, her face pale. He was right.
I snatched the radio.
"Hello cage" I spoke
A pause.
"Who is this?" He asked
"You know me. Maybe I should show you the scars on my back to jog your memory" I said
His face shifted on the screen- just enough for me to know he remembered.
"That's right. You know me well enough to believe me when I say I'll kill your father. Release their people, and I'll release yours" I said, my voice firm.
"I can't do that" cage replied
"It would mean the end of our people." Dante spoke, his eyes meeting mine.
"That's called a casualty of war" my knife twirled in my hand as I stepped closer.
"Diana. We need him" Bellamy warned
"And I need his son to believe me" I answered, never taking my eyes off Dante.
"Don't make me do this, Cage." I said into the radio.
On the screen, cages jaw hardened.
"Dad.... I'll take care of our people." Cage said
Dante's eyes widened- in fear, for the first time.
"None of us have a choice here, Diana." Dante spoke
"Everyone has a choice. And this is mine" I dropped, low and steady.
The blade slid into his chest. His breath caught, his body collapsing at my feet.
"I bear it, so they don't have to" I said
And then Dante Wallace was gone.
