~9~
I blinked slowly, the cold stone walls sharpening into focus around me. A cell. He really did it.
My eyes shifted toward the door. Bellamy stood there, silent, watching me.
"Guess we're back to the drop ship" I said, voice flat. But he just turned and walked away.
Time blurred. Days, maybe more- it was hard to tell, trapped in a cage. The only way I knew night from day was the heaviness of the dark pressing in. Tonight was one of those nights.
It was fine until suddenly it wasn't. A sharp pang burned through my chest, hollow and cold, like a warning. Something was wrong. I didn't know what. I couldn't know. All I could do was sit in silence, left with the ache and no answers.
The silence broke with shouting in the distance. I froze. I would know that voice anywhere.
"Lincoln" I whispered, then louder.
"Lincoln! Lincoln, get me out of here! Hey!" My fists slammed against the bars.
"Bellamy! Please!" I begged
But the shouting faded, and once again, silence swallowed me whole.
Later, footsteps stopped outside my cell. Bellamy again.
"If you're wondering if I knew about them trying to escape, I didn't. You locked me in here alone, remember?" I muttered
"Even if you weren't, I thought you'd like to know Marcus will be locked up now." He said.
I stayed quiet. He turned to leave.
"You really don't believe Pike is going to kill us, do you?" I called out
He hesitated.
"You're a fool if you think he's doing what's right. Sooner or later you'll realize. And before you can stop it, every single one of us will be dead. Including me" I said
But he said nothing. Just walked away.
The next time, pike himself came with Bellamy and the guards. They stoped outside my cell.
"You coming to kill me?" I asked bitterly
"I've come here to tell you the same thing I told Marcus, Sinclair, and Lincoln. At dawn, you'll be executed for your crimes" pike said evenly
My jaw tightened.
"What crimes did I commit? Last thing I remember, talked to Bellamy. Didn't know talking was a crime" I said
"You are a leader. The commanders right hand. That makes you guilty of every death committed under her rule. Enjoy your last moments alive" pike stepped away, the others following.
All but Bellamy. He lingered, staring.
"Now do you believe me?" I asked quietly
He said nothing. And then he left me again.
When the guards finally came with chains, I didn't resist. I walked out between them, standing beside Lincoln, Marcus, and Sinclair.
"Make way" pike ordered as we marched through camp.
"Yes sir, Chancellor" Harper's voice answered. As I passed, her eyes found mine, and something unspoken flickered between us.
But then a voice cracked through the radio.
"On their knees!" Pike barked, and the guards shoved us down.
I tuned out pikes orders, mind racing for escape. Then-
"Put them in there. Let's go, move it." Pike demanded
We were dragged upright, shoved into a small room.
"Let me guess... five...four...three...two...one." I muttered
The floor shifted, and Octavia climbed out from beneath it.
"get in" she said.
I didn't hesitate.
We waited until pikes footsteps thundered away before Octavia pushed the hatch back open.
"All clear, let's go." she whispered
We crawled out, stretching stiff limbs.
"It's a little bit tight in there" Marcus chuckled slightly
"Try doing it for sixteen years" she shot back, snapping his chains free.
One by one, she freed us. Lincoln. Then me. Miller slipped inside, and Octavia handed him weapons.
The radio cracked again.
Then I hear Octavio speak, her voice slightly frantic.
"What is it? This wasn't the plan. We use their frequency so they could hear us. Go ahead" O said
"Stay where you are. I repeat stay where you are. The exit is not clear." Harper spoke on the radio
"How many guards?" O asked
"Too many. I said stay put." Harper replied
But then another voice came through.
"That was Monty." O said, her eyes flickering to me.
"Guess he's with us after all" miller smirked
"Pike will find out." Marcus warned
"We don't know that. What do we know is that we have to move" Abby pressed
I stood with Octavia keeping watch when Pikes voice boomed over the radio.
"I have a message for the traitors in this camp. There will be an execution today. Either return yourselves in, or the other grounders prisoners will die in your place." His voice spoke
Octavia grabbed my arm.
"Let's go" she said
But I shook her off. Lincoln's gaze might mine, heavy with the same resolve.
"No, wait. I can't let them die because of me. I am their leader. This is my burden" I said
"No, Diana. You must live, I will go in their place" Lincoln said firmly
"Lincoln, Diana, please. We're almost out. Don't do this." O begged
"I know what you're feeling but they're searching the station. We need to go. Now" Marcus said
"You should" I told him
"No. All of you will" Lincoln cut in
"Fine. I'm going with you. We fight together" O snapped
Lincoln's expression softened. He cupped her face.
"I love you" he said
And before she could respond, he kissed her- then drove a needle into her neck. Her eyes fluttered shut. He caught her, cradling her like something fragile.
"What are you doing?" I demanded, horror and anger twisting in my chest.
"Same thing you were doing- for your people. Just get her out" he said passing Octavia into Marcus's arms.
"Stay strong" Marcus whispered, handing her to miller, who had come back to hurry us.
"No. Lincoln, you're going with her. I will not let you die" I snapped, voice breaking.
"You must, Diana" he said gently
"Too many people have died because of me. Dont let you be one of them. I can't lose my brother....please" my throat burned
But then I felt the sharp prick at my neck again.
I turned, vision blurring, to see Marcus lowering a needle.
"No....Lincoln" I whispered, my words breaking.
Then darkness claimed me again.
