Prologue

They said she went missing in the night.
They lied.

The Gray family was well known on the ark. Not because they were or had solved some great crises- no the grays were engineers, but ordinary ones. What made them infamous was their daughter, Diana Gray.

So what had Diana done? Nothing. It wasn't what she had done, but what happened to her. One night, she simply disappeared. At least, that's what everyone thought.

At three years old, little Diana was called the halls of the Ark with her parents. She was the daughter they hadn't want. For generations the Gray family had only birthed boys- until her. Her parents never forgave her for being different.

Of course, Diana didn't understand that. She was just a child. But that was the year everything changed.

Running down the hall, she stumbled, scraping her knee. She got up quickly, tears flooding, and ran to her parents. She looked up, hoping for comfort- but their faces froze in shock and horror.

Confused she looked back down at her knee and froze. Black blood trickled down her skin. She might not have known much, but she knew blood wasn't supposed to look like that.

From that day on, Diana stopped being their daughter. She became a subject- for their anger, for their cruelty, and for when they wanted a little extra food for themselves.

By six years old she had found a friend.

"Oh come on Bell! We have to hurry if we want more time to play!" Diana laughed racing down the halls.
"I'm coming Dia!" Bellamy blake, seven years old, and already her best friend, shouted after her.

They run to their usual hiding spot, laughter echoing off the metal walls.

"You should've seen the teachers face when I answered it right" Diana said proudly laughing
"I wish I was there" Bellamy laughs with her

After a while Bellamy pulled something from his pocket.
"What's that?" I ask
"It's your birthday gift. I know you said you didn't want anything, but how could I not get my best friend something?" He answers
"Bellamy-" I start
"Just open it!" He grins cutting me off

Inside was a necklace, a ring strung on the chain. She lifted it up carefully, noticing an infinite sign engraved on the ring.

"Oh Bellamy I love it!" I beamed slipping it in
"I'm never taking this off. Thank you" I smile throwing my arms around him
"You're welcome. I found it while I was cleaning and thought you'd like it" he says shyly
"Well you were right" I smiled

They sat together in comfortable silence for a while before Diana spoke up.
"Bellamy? What's your mom like?" I speak up
"Why?" He asks suspicious almost

"Because I want to know if all moms are the same" I replied quick
"Well... she's nice. A good person. She's helping me grow up to be a guard one day" he says proud

Diana only nodded.

"What about your parents?" He asks
I hesitated, then chose not to answer.

"Hey- about that book you gave me" I said changing the subject quickly
"The one about Rome?" He asks
"Yes yes that one. Have you seen the name Octavia in it? I love that name. If I ever had a daughter, I'd name her that. And if I had a sister, I'd tell my parents to name her that too" I tell him
"Yeah. I think I would too" he reply's softly

Footsteps echoed in the hall.
The guards.

"Aww man they are early today" I groan
"On your birthday too" Bellamy joins sadly
"It's ok. I'll see you tomorrow. And thank you for the necklace bell" I smile grabbing a hold of it
"Anytime" he smiles back as I ran off

She spent the rest of her birthday with her parents- who hated her. Yelling, mostly. About how she should have been a boy, how her blood wasn't normal. They hadn't hit her that day- maybe because it was her birthday- but she knew tomorrow would be the same as always.

But something came that she hadn't expected.

"Diana take the trash bin out" my father orders
"But we do that in Wednesdays, it's only Sunday" I reply.

The slap stung her cheek.

"Don't question me. Take it out" he orders

She obeyed, gripping the bin and heading down the corridor. The Ark was dim, alive with distant work.

She never saw him coming. A hand clamped over her mouth, lifting her off her feet. No one heard her muffled screams.

When she was finally set down, she realized she was finally strapped into a chair. A dropship.

"What are you doing? Where are we going? Who are you?" I demanded, voice shaking.
"Shut up and hold on" the man said as the drop ship launched

Through the window, she saw earth.

Her stomach dropped.
"We're... going to the ground?" I ask and his silence was my answer.

He glanced at her.
"Might as well tell you. Your parents found out I was planning to leave. They helped me get a drop ship- but only if I took you with me" he tells me

Diana froze.
"They... wanted me gone?" I ask

"Don't sweat it kid. Your probably better off dead than with them" he replied

Tears burned her eyes as the drop ship rattled, entering earth's atmosphere.

Her hand clutched the necklace Bellamy had given her just hours ago.

"May we meet again" I whispered, then everything went black.

She awoke to the sound of beeping. Light pierced her eyes. When her vision cleared. She realized- she was on the ground. Alive.

The drop ship wrecked. She stumbled over to the man, shaking his shoulder.
"Wake up. We're here- we made it" I say

Nothing. No pulse. He was dead.

She closed her eyes and turned away.

For the first time, she looked at earth. Sunlight filtered through the towering trees. Flowers glowed in colors she had never seen. The air was crisp, clean. Beautiful.

And then, her breath caught. A horse emerged from the trees, powerfully and striking. It came right up to her, and she reached out hesitantly. Its muzzle pressed into her palm. She giggled at the feeling.

"I'm going to call you... spark" I whispered. The horse snorted as if approving.

It nudged her arm, and she glanced down. Blood fell from a cut, black and strange.

"Yeah I know. My blood's weird. Everyone said that back home." I tell it

Then another horse trotted out- a foal, dark as midnight except a single streak of red in its mane.

"And you'll be fire. Spark and fire. Perfect" I smile rubbing its head

She walked with them until exhaustion pulled her down. Lying in the grass, she closed her eyes.

Little did she know- when she woke. It would be in her new home.
