Zayn is difficult to describe. He has many different personality traits that he uses to his advantage, having lived life the hard way he's learned to play it his way. He's manipulative and calculating when it comes to what he wants or needs, and he isn't afraid to use people to get what he wants. It sounds cruel, but he really just doesn't care. In 50 years they'll be dead and he'll be living as he always has been.
He's selfish and rude, and he's never afraid to pick a fight or say what he wants. But deep under all that, he's lonely. He misses his siblings and he hates being alive. He yearns for love, and yet he's accepted he'll never find it, after all anyone he loves dies eventually. He refuses to let himself make emotional attachments, hiding beneath the personality of an asshole.
Really, if he opens up, he's a good guy. He's caring and he'll protect those he cares about with his life. He's extremely flirtatious and he's very confident, after all even if you don't like him, there's plenty of people and plenty of years ahead of him. He doesn't need anyone, but he wants someone. Someone to care for and love, take care of, and have the same done to him. 

Backstory
Zayn used to have it all; the perfect family, the perfect life. His parents were loving and cared for him and his sisters, and he was happy. He was going to be a doctor, start a life with someone he loved. Until that night. He was attacked on the street, beaten and left to die, when a vampire found him. He was transformed, he became one of them, and became a stranger to the life he'd known. He tried to stay with his family, but eventually he was shunned. He moved far away, starting his own life, having lost everything and everyone. He tried over and over to find his someone, and he failed. Eventually, he gave up. His heart hardened and so did his personality. He refuses to drink blood as much as he can, finding it disgusting, but deep inside he knows how much he yearns for it.
