DLC in Pokemon. (And how it may appear in the future.)

So now that even Zelda has DLC I think it's very likely that we will see some form of DLC in Pokemon Switch as I will be calling it.

But why do I think that it'll appear in Pokemon for Switch and not say Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Well that all has to do with: Pricing and Equalizing.

This very well may be one of the reasons Pokemon can justify having two versions still, seeing as though the trade argument has fallen through entirely with Pokemon Bank and online trading. Pokemon games are sold at $40 when at full price. This is a whole $20 cheaper than what a console game normally costs.

Now this is because 3DS games are smaller, less powerful, and generally shorter when compared to console games. And this holds true. Mario 3D land is shorter than 3D World on the Wii U and there's a $20 price gap.

So already despite Pokemon pushing the console to its limits they're getting less money than a CoD developers who just slap shinier visuals onto a game, some new maps, and a new box art. But let's compare it to a good console game like Witcher 3. Now let's say you buy the $20 DLC for Witcher 3 thinking it's more than worth it.

Then you buy Pokemon White and see Pokemon White 2 is easily worth the money. How much do you spend in total on both products? $80.

You could actually argue Pokemon has had DLC since the first games because the event Pokemon are downloaded content. They're just free DLC. But what about paid DLC? Well you could consider buying both versions of the game or even buying the middle version/sequel version as paid DLC.

A lot of people don't realize that you're paying the same amount for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Sun that you are for Breath of the Wild and the Expansion Pass. They simply think because the big budget console game only charges you $20 for DLC that the smaller Pokemon games that are already less of a profit should do the same.

But now for the second half of this discussion. Pokemon Switch. Now I firmly believe there should only be one version. You no longer need to buy multiple copies for multiple save files because the Switch has multiple save files. And you can even create an account in 5 minutes if you're fine with not being able to take the account online. Even then you can link the account to a Nintendo Account and have two different files that can both go online.

So will Pokemon Switch have paid DLC? Maybe. The game is $60 and on a much larger scale than any of the previous Pokemon. But we also know they want to push this game out as soon as possible. Potentially early 2019 or even late 2018 depending on how good they are at mastering the Switch's system.

So maybe they have a few more ideas they want to implement and a need a little time for but can't justify making the player pay $60 more for. So they push it out in DLC. Maybe $5 or $10 if it's a lot of content.

Also fun fact Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon and Pokemon Switch are being developed by two separate teams. They split up the old team and the new team so that the old team is working on the Switch version and the new team is working on Ultra Sun and Moon. So it is reasonable to assume that late 2018 isn't impossible for Pokemon Switch.

But we've now talked about DLC for Pokemon so I just want to go off topic and talk about Pokemon Switch.

A lot of people want Pokemon to follow you and want multiple regions. But the 3DS simply isn't strong enough for that kind of feature right now. Two completely separately moving models, some gigantic when the game is already straining the system and two large regions made up of entirely 3D models would be too taxing on the system or might be too expensive to produce that they can still make a profit off of a $40 price tag.

But once the price tag is bumped up $20 and they move on to an incredibly powerful system that can run Zelda and Mario things will get crazy. It's hard to imagine just what will happen when Pokemon jumps into the HD world. What's going to change? What will remain? What can they do with this new hardware. I don't think anyone expected them to create Sun and Moon on the 3DS hardware. They even said themselves that they thought they pushed the system to its limits when they made X and Y.

But they kept pushing.

Anyways this was just some stuff I wanted to talk about. It's been a while since I've had one of these discussion chapters so it's nice to come back to them. Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts on the matter! Have a nice day, bye!
