Backstory: Just read the book, XD it's a very long story. To summarize his early life though:

Grayton grew up in the castle, learning how to be a gentleman for the Selection. He is the oldest of four, two sisters and one brother. His younger sister, Daphne, sacrificed her life for him in a rebel attack when the room he and Alonzo were playing with her in was set on fire by rebels. She found a way out for them, but the walls of fire collapsed in on her, ending her life. Grayton has always had the memory of looking back behind him to see her face of terror as the walls fell on top of her, and desires to model her example of 'agape' (sacrificial) love for his future wife.
