16. Just when you think you know the truth
Zeref Pov.
As I drove Mavis to Clear Water Hospital, she explained to me what was going on. Apparently something happened to one of her friends. They were injured and broke their leg, a bad incident.
But, even if that's what she told me, I knew she was hiding something. A small detail. I wasn't going to pry though, this was her concern. Not mine. Sure it was peeking my interest, why wouldn't it? Whenever someone doesn't tell you something, you always want to somewhat know. Even if it's the tiniest part of you. All because of curiosity.
"Ok, Lucy said for me to meet her on the third floor. I'll be down soon hopefully. But if I'm not, you can leave if you want." Mavis told me, her expression held a still serious sense. She started to walk away, then turned to face me. "Oh yeah, thanks once again. I know you're probably annoyed and tired, and this isn't how you'd want to spend your day. So I'm sorry."
"Don't be." I said, "I'm just glad if I can help you with something. To be true." She smiled at me. Her glowing smile held it's usual light, and little did I know in that moment, that might be the last time I could see that smile.

I arrived on the third floor, finding Lucy beside the door of room 2. Her shoulder length blonde hair was a bit messy, but she's still what most people would refer to as 'incredibly pretty.' Except probably not Zeref... Wait what if he does? I mean it's not wrong of him. He's a guy, he's allowed to notice pretty girls and stuff... Ugh still don't like it. I'm just going to scratch that out of mind. Completely forget! It's not my concern right now.
"Hey Maivis."
"Let's cut things short. Juvia didn't actually brake her ankle. You just need to talk to me. Right?" I asked, trusting my instincts. I knew Lucy, and I know what she's getting at.
"Yeah, you're right. I'll confess to that. Sorry if it did worry you, but I need to tell you something." Lucy gained a straight face, about to talk about something. Not just kid around. So I listened.
"Then tell me. I'd like to hear."
"You haven't talked to any of us for awhile now. Which we're sort of taking as you've picked Zeref over us. But you don't actually mean that do you?" Lucy asked of me. I shook my head.
"No, I mean it. I choose him."
"Bu-but. Why? Why would you do that?" Lucy started to stutter, "you don't even know what he did!"
"Actually Lucy, I do know. I know more than you because I actually bothered to get the information out of him! He's not like anyone thinks, he's kind. And well, it's like, if I'm to walk home in the dark, he'll chase after me. He's by my side. When you guys refused to be." I looked up at her, starring into her chocolate brown eyes. She starred at her feet.
"Do you really know? Sometimes, people aren't like what you think." She began, "Mavis there's a reason why I warned you and my other friends about Zeref."
"Is it because he's a murder? Yeah, I already know." I rolled my eyes, if only she knew the other half of the story. Then she'd understand. Everyone would understand.
"Do you know the story behind it?"
"How he did it wanting to protect his brother Aurum? Yes." I crossed my arms. I know I should be patient, but I was getting fed up with the conversation.
"And me." Lucy's words were soft.
"What?" I gazed up at her.
"He usually forgets that part." She gave a small laugh as tears started to fall from her eyes.
"He, did it to protect you too? What? You were there?" I suddenly gained back interest, a lot of it. He, why wouldn't he tell me that part?
"Mavis, I was there the night where things went down. Yes. And it's not like how you think." She wiped the tears away from her eyes, "we weren't friends or anything. But he knew my parents were lawyers. So he got me to come to his house. So I would believe what he said about his father, so I could tell my parents. He dragged me into that unstable dangerous environment."
"Huh? Bu- but. I though Aurum was the one who got help about their father." I butted in.
"No. Aurum kept completely quiet. He didn't want to worsen the situation. It's like I said. Zeref always leaves me out of it. Mostly because he doesn't want to admit it was really him who drove his father over the edge. Enough to murder an innocent child." Hearing everything... It somehow was making me angry. I don't even know why! It's just that, if what she's saying is true, he didn't tell me the full story. And in that moment he told me, it was a time to be fully clean and clear about everything. So, I guess it's just ticking me off.
"You see, that's the thing about Zeref. He, can be really intense. And he has this ability, to drive people insane. To kill people. He's not what you think Mavis. That's why I'm warning you. I want you back with us. I want you to be safe." Her eyes were watering like a stream. She seemed so dead serious, it was scarring me.
"What, what is it about him? The thing, that made you so terrified." I felt myself shaking while I spoke.
"Mavis, he warned me, that bad things happened when people were around him. I now see why. Because he was mad. When he killed, he didn't even cry. He, instead-" he bit her lip seeming deep in fear, "smiled."
Zeref Pov.
It was taking awhile, but I was still going to wait. It didn't feel right forcing Mavis to walk from here to her house. Besides, she doesn't do being alone at night. So I'll be staying at her place anyways.
The elavtor then opened revealing the little blond Mavis. She still looked tired and stressed like this morning. What exactly happened? Because I think it made her feel un doubtfully worse.
"Mavis, hey. How'd it go?" I asked softly, not wanting to upset her. she looked at me forcefully, a mix between confusion and rage.
"Zeref." Her words were cold, "we need to talk."
