20. A Dove and a Crow

Mavis Pov.

After explaining things to my parents they freaked out in two very different ways. My dad was demanding to have a talk with Zeref and find out his intentions or something like that. While my mom was overwhelmed with joy, wanting to celebrate. They're both such dorks. But I love them. So that caused me to have a bit of a crazy recovery from my cold, but now I feel free and great! So today I'm waiting outside by the bus stop, ready to go on my first date.

Weird, never saw myself dating someone at the beginning of the school year. Yet here I am. I can feel all the nerves and excitement just running around inside of me. I have no idea what Zeref has planned but I feel butterflies in my stomach, like I just went down a big hill on a roller coaster. That means things must be good, I just know it. I got a feeling in my gut.

I saw Zeref walking towards me, I felt the pink tint form in my cheek bones. He looked... Nice. Ok, very nice. He gelled his hair lightly and was wearing a casual yet formal shirt and good dress pants along with a tie to complete the look. A bold choice I thought, sure the pants were grey, but his shirt was a whitish blue. Colour? In his wardrobe? Who knew? The smile was appearing on my face no matter what. Couldn't be helped.

"Hey Mavis." He smiled at me. Oh, he smells nice too. Is that, cologne? Fancy are we now? Still it helps to make me feel more nervous. He's really quite handsome. A nice fresh look. Ugh, how red is my face by now?

Zeref Pov.

I couldn't stop starring at Mavis, she looked stunning. Usually I only really saw her as cute, but she's actually quite beautiful too. Her wild blonde hair framed her face delicately, her white dress flowing in the wind fitting her figure elegantly. I feel a bit ridiculous. I was clueless how to dress, my aunt had to give me pointers. I didn't want to look bad or anything. I want to make a good impression.

"So, what the plan?" She asked me.

"Can't just tell you. That takes away too much. But I do know you, and I know you like scenery." I said, she stared at me intently. Intrigued and curious now.

"Obviously. But, hmm let me think." She tapped a finger against her temple as she tried to concentrate.

"Your still relatively new to this town. You haven't visited this place, sadly, because you'll love it. And it's in walking distance too." I tell her. Her eyes grow wider with interest. she looks like she's about to burst.

"Well don't just stand there! Let's get going! Come on! I want to know!" She cheered, leading me by the hand to the right. I laughed at her.

"Um, Mavis. The destination is in that direction." I pointed to the left. She gazed over in the other direction.

"Oh." She laughed sheepishly, "I knew that." I rolled my eyes. Obviously she didn't. She may look more grown up, like a woman, but she's still the childish girl I know. That she can't change, and I don't want her to. It's a part of her that I admire, just one of the many things.

"Yeah, it's probably best if I lead you there." I told her, walking in front. It took a couple minutes to reach the art museum, thank god too, it was getting cold out.

"So, what do you think?" I asked of her. Her vivid green eyes were dancing, she was in awe. I felt myself blush lightly. When ever she get's all happy and inspired like this she looks really cute and like, she lights up.

"Amazing, I never knew there was an art museum so close to my house! Let's go inside already!" She was now excited as I hoped she'd be. We entered the building hand in hand, and gazed around the paintings, sculptures, and multiple other representations.

"Ah, look at that!" Mavis pointed at a modern painting with some interesting symbols against a splatter paint background. "Do those symbols mean anything?"

"No idea, what does the description say?" I asked, she gazed down reading it.

"Ah, doesn't mention if it's any ancient language or anything. So I guess we'll have to interpret it ourselves." Mavis grinned, "So what do you think it means?" I analyzed it. Hmm.

"Well, honestly the way the colours bring it all out, I think it means words are nothing with out meaning, emotion. Like those symbols are nothing with the colours. They need each other to make the painting." I give my answer. Mavis seems impressed enough. She gives a thumbs up.

"As always you are more observant than me." She laughs, "I thought it meant like words are art in their own way, that they a visual beauty as well. But maybe not."

"No, I think that's a pretty good answer too. Makes sense, you are poetic, so you'd see the grace and beauty in words." She looked up at me, blushing. I looked away, hiding my red face. "Just thinking you know."

"Thank you, I really think you're the only one who sees that in me." She admits. I shrug.

"Other may or may not see it, but it's certain they'd hear it. It's your words I remember most." I say. I know I'm just sort of speaking the thoughts in my head, but I don't really care. I can say what I want around Mavis, and she seems to listen keenly. In a way, I'm comfortable around her.

"Well, you're one to speak. People don't see you for what you are. And it's a shame because, you're an amazing person. Strong, and wise. You seem to know things, and your words stay in my head too, because they're illuminating." She says. We both gaze into each others eyes. Just standing there, looking for awhile. I guess we were both just speaking from the depths of our minds. We blush.

"Oh, hey! Look at the one over there." Mavis points towards another painting, we walk over to it. Observing it. Oh.... It's a remarkable painting, no doubts. It's of a crow and a dove, huddled together in a cuddle. Embracing each other in their detailed feathered wings. We both are interrupting it as ourselves. It's just like our paintings in art class too. I'm a crow. She's a dove. What a strange pairing we are. But like this painting, we're also outstanding. We're both breath taken by it.

"It's us." Her voice is hoarse. She is just recovering from a cold.

"Yeah, it is." I answer. We both reach for each other's hands, grasping it tightly. I feel warmth inside of me, something I'm not used to. I smile. I like moments like these. I like moments with her.

"Hey, Mavis?"

"Yeah?" She still sounds raspy.

"Can I just say something?"

"Sure."

"I really think I'm in love wi-" just as the moment I was about to finish my sentence I felt Mavis's grip become loose as she collapsed to the floor, coughing up blood.
