5. Art is the mind's dream
I'm going to love art class! I get to hang out with Lucy, Erza and Natsu there! Plus I'm actually pretty good at art. Well, at least I consider myself to be. Erza tells me she's a good artist too so I can't wait to see her drawings.
We were all walking down to the art room which was on the bottom floor of the school. Waiting outside the door was a herd of other students. My eyes only really noticed one of them, the one that was sitting alone in a corner away from the crowd. Zeref.
"Hi!" I waved over to him. Lucy instantly grabbed my arm.
"What are you? Insane? Don't just wave over at him." Lucy hushed me. I pouted.
"Why not, he's my friend...ly stranger." I said, looking back at him. He looked so sad, as always. His eyes held this darkness that I wanted to know about. Desperately wanted to know.
"Mavis. Let's just leave it alone." Erza said, standing up straight. Serious and affirmative. She sort of reminds me of a knight when she's like that.
As the art teacher opened the doors, the crowd rushed inside. My group fell back a little bit to wait till the entrance was cleared up.
We all took the last art easels that were near by each other. But there was only three.
"Damn it, there's only one left by Zeref." Natsu looked around the room. I smiled.
"I'll take that one, you can switch with me." I offered him. Erza and Lucy looked at me like I was insane. Oh sigh, I still just don't understand. Oh well, I'm allowed to do stuff myself, and I'm also allowed to figure some things out. I skipped over to Zeref and gave him a grin.
"So we meet again." I put my pencil box on the easel. Zeref didn't look impressed, but then again when is he anything but a downer and sad.
"Why aren't you with your friends?" He asked me, bitterly setting up a blank canvas. I gazed over back at them they were half watching me, half goofing off. I shrugged.
"There was only three easels and you are my friend anyways. Sort of." I try not to make him mad.
"Mavis, it's not safe to be around me." He stares at his feet.
"Zeref, why is everyone so afraid of you?" I asked, with big hopeful eyes. Please tell me! Please tell me! He shakes his head.
"Don't ask that, I'm not going to answer." He takes out a pencil and draws some stuff out on the canvas before he paints. I frown. Oh come on! Why isn't anyone telling me. I have a right to know. This is what sucks about new schools, your always behind on the personal stories and gossip. I sigh.
"Fine, fine I won't ask about it now. But I do what an explanation someday." I point out.
"Just get to work." He told me, still looking deep into his painting. Well ok then grumpy pants. I begin my artwork, it's a bird flying across a light green and orange sky. It looks very unique and elegant to me. I like it. Looking over at Lucy, Natsu and Erza I can see Lucy arguing with Natsu over the giant blob of paint on what might of been a nice painting. Whoops. It makes me giggle. Oh, those two would make such a good couple. Natsu is innocently defending himself with his hands up above his head. Erza seems to be focusing greatly at her painting of herself in armour. Oh my, it looks... Interesting. Her drawing skills are a tad off. I look back at my own, feeling a bit more pride in it. Until I looked over at Zeref's. Oh, my, god.
"That's amazing!" I cheer, admiring the brilliant use of dark shades and the vibrancy of the red. I notice we have similar themes. Birds. His is a wounded dove on the battle field, while mine is a crow flying free.
"Yours is nice. But why does that crow get to fly through such a view? If it's a bird that symbolizes death." Zeref asked, looking over my shoulder. What? He's talking to me this time! I didn't need to start the conversation! That's what I call progress.
"Because, it's done with all the judgement it received. It chose to just ignore all that, and take time to enjoy things in life instead." I told him, he glanced at me. Like he was questioning my motives. But only for second.
"Don't you find it such an ugly bird?" He asked, something hidden in the undertone of his voice.
"No, crows may be scraggly and scary to some people. But they have their own grace and story. I like them. They're different from the rest." I give my reply. Starring at Zeref I get a face full of surprise. Even if it's the smallest thing, he's smiling at his feet.
"Well, that's sort of a sugar coated answer. But your a weird poet." He tells me. I smile back at him.
"You know, I like art class." I say. He sighs. And whispers,
"Me too."
