8. Things change i guess

Mavis Pov.

I sat next to Zeref in biology. We were just learning animal and plant kingdoms, basic stuff. I enjoyed it, but judging by his expression Zeref wasn't a big fan.

"Are you bored?" I poked his cheek, leaning over the hard surfaced table. I was ready to go to sleep after an exhausting weekend helping out at the local animal shelter. (Yes, time skip. I'm sorry!!! >~<) but I knew I should pay attention.

"Yeah I'm bored. Biology is probably my worst subject." He sighed, leaning back in his chair.

"You have an A in everything." I pouted at his smartness. I was an average student. Getting solid A's B's and maybe a C if I get lazy. But Zeref will most likely make honor role with no troubles. Ugh, smart people. They're lucky.

"I have a 92, that's my lowest A." He said. I glared.

"Oh you poor thing. A 92." I moaned playfully. After last week Zeref and I have been getting along rather smoothly. He doesn't laugh or smile. But I can't force him to go against his personality. And even still, I can sense something in him. Some depressing thing. But he's made real progress. I guess you could say I'm proud.

"Sh, Mavis. We really need to hear this." Zeref pointed my attention back on the teacher. Oh fine fine. I'll pay attention. I listened to the teacher babble on. I loved this subject, but my brain was off where's in a different place. Thinking, deep thoughts. I know I said I'd let it go, but what is it with Zeref. Something is holding him back, from being just generally happy. I don't like it. He's a really nice guy when you get down to it. He doesn't deserve whatever this is.

Zeref Pov.

I studied Mavis, who was wide eyed staring at the teacher. I knew better than to think she was actually listening to him. She was thinking. She tends to do that. A lot.

"Ok, I'll see you all tomorrow. Go to your next class." The teacher dismissed us. I got up from my seat, as Mavis still sat staring at the board full of poorly illustrated mushrooms and cows.

"Mavis, get up. Class is over." I shook her shoulder. She jumped up.

"Huh? Seriously! I-I didn't even realize." She looks around the whole room, finally noticing everyone's gone. She's such a hopeless case, but she can take care of herself. Honestly, it's sort of cute when she dazes off like this.

"Um, what class do I have? Your better at remembering things." She asks me, smiling sheepishly.

"You forgot your class? Wow Mavis. Just check your schedule. I bet you have history." I gave my guess. Mavis hurriedly looked through her binder to find the tiny paper with her class schedule on it.

"Your right! I got history with Lucy!" She cheers.

"You remember who's in your classes, but not the class itself?" I'm more so the opposite.

"Yes! I always remember the friends I have in the class! Like, see!" She shows me the piece of paper. On it, beside each class listed, Mavis wrote the names of her friends presumably in that class.

"I wrote down your name in Art, and bio!" She grins joyfully at me. Of course she'd write about her friends. I guess I'm happy that she actually bothered to write my name first on both of those classes. I never really had a friend since the sixth grade. That's when, the big thing happened. I was alone ever since.

Mavis Pov.

I thanked Zeref for the reminder of my classes, and hurried off to history. I wish he could be there with me, but then again Lucy probably wouldn't join us. Because of this whole thing about Zeref. Still don't get it.

Oh well. It'll still be nice to talk to her after the weekend. I rushed into the class, out of breath. I was slightly late. Whoops. The teacher lightly scolded me as I found the seat next to Lucy.

"Hey!" I said to her. She gave a tiny smile.

"Oh, hi Mavis." She then looked away. Hmm, what's up with her? Did I do something wrong? Oh no, I don't want to upset people. I hate when that happens!

"What's wrong?" I asked, curious at the sudden change in behaviour. Lucy sighed.

"I'll talk to you after class about it. Ok?" She told me. I nodded my head in agreement. I guess I'll just enjoy the class alone then...
(After history)

"So whats up?"

"Mavis, I'll make this quick and clear as possible." Lucy exhaled. She seemed upset, and worried. Like she didn't want to do this.

"You've been hanging out with Zeref. Like, a lot. We all warned you about him. And yet you choose to defy our words." Lucy looks down at her feet. She's uncomfortable with what she's saying. But her words are sinking in to me. This speech is familiar to me. And her tone of voice, is the same Zeref used when he wanted me to go away. Emotionless.

"Please don't tell me-"

"He's not safe Mavis. You've got to stop." Lucy stares around, making sure no one is listening in on us. I'm fine with that. I don't want anyone hearing either.

"I've got to stop what? Being his friend?" I frowned at her. This is just, wrong. And I don't like it.

"Mavis, we want to protect you for one thing. But that's just one. Secondly we want to protect ourselves, so we're not going to get dragged into this Zeref business." She has watery eyes. By 'we' she must mean herself, Erza, Juvia, and Levy. I ball my hands up into tiny fists. This can't be happening.

"So you have a choice Mavis. You can be all illusionary friends with that- that." She chokes on her tears, "but you can also just forget about it. And just be with us. Please Mavis. Choose wisely." She walks away from me, she can no longer bear it. Now I'm really serious. I need to know what Zeref's deep dark secret is. Because it's going to cost me some friends otherwise. There's no other option. This secret, will no longer be a secret by tomorrow.

(Sorry for short chapter, I'll have a longer than usual one next time though)
