4.5: Mixed Signals

~~~~~
The 118 and Officer Shore were all in the waiting area, hoping for some good news. Everyone was worried about Perri, especially when they found out what kind of bullet she was hit with.
"Paxton!?" Athena called out when she saw the ginger haired boy. "She's in surgery." Athena said to him. When she noticed an older woman, she has never met before, she looked between Paxton and her. "Sargent Athena Grant, I work with Perri and she is also a close friend." She said extending her hand to the woman.
"Calliope Hardie. I'm her YiaYia...her grandmother." YiaYia smiled taking Athena's hand and shook it lightly. "Good to know that my only granddaughter has so many people that care about her."
"YiaYia, you have three other granddaughters." Paxton stated.
"I like Perri more than them but don't tell your cousins that." YiaYia said
Paxton was about to say something else but stopped when he saw a doctor walking towards them. "What's the news?" Paxton asked
"Good news is she out of surgery. We were able to get the bullet out. Bad news is she lost a lot of blood. Bullet nicked an artery. She'll need to stay here overnight for observation in case she starts to bleed internally." The doctor explained.
"Can we see her?" YiaYia chimed in
"Five minutes and direct family only." The doctor said before walking off.
"Paxton, can you go the apartment ready and go to the hotel, get my things and drop them off at the apartment." YiaYia started.
"Why do I have to get your stuff from the hotel?" He asked.
"Someone has to stay here with your sister and do you really want your elderly grandmother rushing all over Los Angeles?" YiaYia questioned before tossing the key card to Paxton before walking off.
After three hours, Athena, Officer Shore and the 118 were able to see Perri. Athena thought that it would be a good idea if she and Officer Shore saw her first so they could tell her what happened.
"Mind if we come in?" Athena asked softly standing in the door way of Perri's hospital room.
"Not at all Sargent." Perri smiled upon seeing the older woman.
"How you feeling?" Athena asked, she knew that it was a dumb question to ask but she wanted to hear what Perri would say. Athena walked into the room, with Officer Shore not that far behind her.
"Like a got shot and like I might be a little high." Perri said with a small chuckle about the last part.
Athena chuckled softly, "You were and you might be." Athena's facial expression soon changed.
Perri noticed Athena's change in facial expression, "What's wrong?" she asked feeling a bit worried. The EKG started to beep rapidly due to her change in heart rate.
"Nothing major except that we caught the guy who shot you. Lewis Klefton, a drug dealer and gun runner. His base of operations was that house, you and Shore were checking out." Athena started, "He had a box full of Teflon-coated bullets...
"Cop killing bullets. W-Why would he have those?" Perri asked.
"He wanted to be ready incase cops came knocking at his door. His only fault was not be a good shot." Athena finished.
"He most certainly was." Perri groaned as she slowly sat up. She looked at the two women who stood at the edge of her bed and couldn't help but notice that Shore had a white paper bag. "What's in the bag?"
"I stopped at that burger place you like from Hollywood Boulevard. Figured you would like something besides hospital food." Officer Shore said softly, walking over to the right side of the bed and setting the bag on the bed.
"You are the best." Perri smiled at her partner.
Buck's POV
It had been a long couple of days, crazy shifts driving everyone to the brink of exhaustion but they had each other and that's all that mattered. And with a full moon right around the corner, things would only get crazier.
And Perri was still in the hospital recovering after being shot. She hasn't woken up or changed since the last time they checked on her. He was constantly checking in with Paxton who refused to leave the hospital.
Buck knew that he shouldn't be focused on just Perri. If his head is a mess then his judgement is clouded and it could be a risk on the job. So that is why he decided to focus on something else.
If there was one thing that Buck was unsure about was were he stood with Perri. Sure they were friends but he felt as if there was possibly a little bit more to their relationship. They have been hanging out more lately. They were completely comfortable around each other to talk about anything and everything.
"Do you think that it is weird that there might be something more with mine and Perri's friendship?" Buck asked Chimney and his sister as he walked over to the couch, a beer in hand.
"Not really no." Chimney said sitting down in a chair. "I mean, everyone can see how the two of you look at each other and then there is the awkward sexual tension." He said, his eyes fixed on the tv.
"What awkward sexual tension? There's no tension of tension of any kind." Buck stated looking at his friend and sister.
"Yes there is. Every time the two of you are in the same room as each other, there's an awkward conversation that consists of a sentence or two and then there is weird eye contact." Chimney said.
"What do you think, Maddie?" Buck asked his sister hoping that she would tell him the truth.
Maddie didn't like lying to her brother but she knew that he had to figure things out on his own. Both Perri and Buck were stubborn as hell, which made things harder.
"I think you should think about why you believe that there might be something more and if there is, what are you going to do about it." Maddie told him.
"Every time I think of the possibility of Perri and I being more than friends, it ends with us breaking up and her possibly hating me." Buck said.
"Or you two being very happy together." Maddie included looking at her younger sibling.
"What brought all of this on?" Chimney asked taking a bite of his food.
"I don't know. The last time I was at her place. I helped her change her bandage, eat some Greek cake thing that her Yaya made and then her explaining to me that it wasn't her first time getting shot. Then we stayed up the rest of the night watching movies and talking." Buck explained. "I've never saw Perri that vulnerable before. I saw the real her, at least I think it was or it could have been that she was high on pain pills."
"From what Perri's told me, she's had a lot of heartbreaks. Her boyfriend and her best friend fooling around behind her back, or just jerk after jerk." Maddie said. "I think she's just as confused as you are. Throwing out signals to see what you will do."
"Well, it's just confusing me." Buck sighed. "Wait, since when do you and Perri talk?"
Perrin's POV
Perri sighed as she looked at back at herself in her bathroom mirror. She jumped when Paxton barged in, "You could knock, you know."
"Relax. If you were in decent, I would have shut my eyes." Paxton chuckled. He reached to grab his toothbrush and toothpaste.
"What a gentleman." Perri said sarcastically as she pulled her hair back and up into a ponytail. "I heard you passed your certification and got placed into the 127."
"How'd you know?" He mumbled, his toothbrush hanging out of his mouth along with some toothpaste and drool.
"Hen and Chimney have a friend over at the 127 and the friend was asking around about you. Wanted to know if you were somehow related to me." Perri smiled at her twin. "I'm glad that you're an EMT again and I know how much you missed it after you got hurt."
Paxton smiled back at his sister, "I did miss it." He did miss it but he also didn't know if he was ready to go back.
Ever since Paxton got hurt on the job back in Chicago, he has been hesitant to go back to work worried that he would get hurt once again. Paxton got hurt while on a call, a factory that was on fire and structurally unsound, came down while he and his team were stuck. The section of the building where he was at with his partner, the floor collapsed as did a few floors above them. Paxton was buried under the rubble, his arm and collarbone and four ribs broken.
"And now that you have a job now, you can start looking for an apartment and get off my couch." Perri stated as she walked out of the bathroom and into the living room, gathering up the rest of her stuff.
"And here I thought we were having so much fun." Paxton smiled sarcastically as he followed Perrin out of the bathroom.
"Have fun but not too much fun because it's a full moon, so please stay safe." Perri yelled as she rushed out of the apartment.
Perrin wasn't going to lie, she loved her brother being in Los Angeles but he was living on her couch. When she agreed to let him stay with her, she just thought that it would be only for a few days, but it has been months.
This chapter was going to remain a draft until I realized that I could rewrite it in a way to explain what happened to Perri and what happened at the hospital. Also this was used as a way to introduce YiaYia as well.
Hope you all like it.
