4: Shots Fired

"Set Fire to the rain and let's jump into into the flames..."
~~~~~~~
Perri and her new partner, Jane Shore had responded to check on some suspicious activity at a house that is currently on the market to be sold. Upon arriving to the house, Perri got a bad feeling. Pulling up in front of the house and parking, Perri just stared at the house in front of her.
Officer Shore looked over at the red head, "Everything okay?" She asked worried about her fellow officer.
"I just have a bad feeling that something isn't right." Perri explained as she unbuckled and looking out the window at the house. "It's probably nothing."
"Why do you say that?" Jane asked before following her partners gaze to the house.
"There have been at least seven different calls to this address either about suspicious activity or trespassing. This house is on the market to be sold, it shouldn't be getting this much attention." Perri explained as she looked up the address on the computer.
"It could be some neighborhood kids breaking in and partying or a couple of open houses that a person think are suspicious." Jane rebuttaled
"Maybe." Perri muttered as she kept her eyes on the house. "Let's check it out. Call in anything you see."
Perri and Jane exited the car and made their way up to the house. Perri was leading, half way up the front path leading to the house, and before she had time to react, she on the ground.
Frozen with fear and anxiety, Jane rushed to her partner, "Shots fired! Officer Down! Need RA units at current location and requesting immediate backup!" Jane radioed as she pulled her partner back over to the car. She thought it was weird that there wasn't anymore shots. Whoever is in the house must only shoot when people get close. Jane only hoped the car between them and the house and the shooter was enough.
Jane didn't know if it was fear or anxiety that was making everything dizzy but she knew one thing, that she has to choose whether to stay with Perrin until backup and an ambulance gets to the scene or to go an investigate. Her brown eyes fixed on her now bloodied hands pressing against her partner's abdomen.
"Shore!? Shore!?" Perri choked out looking up at the dark haired girl. "Go. I'll be fine. If you sit here, the bastard that shot me might get away."
As if a prayer had been answered, two squad cars pulled up to the house as did an ambulance. The paramedics rushed to Jane and Perri. "We got it from here." A familiar voice said.
Jane nodded slowly and moved her shaking hands away as she stood up slightly, still using the car as a shield as she reached for her gun. She followed after her fellow officers, ready to search the house and arrest the person who had shot her partner.
"Perri, can you hear me? It's Chimney." Chimney questioned his friend as Hen examined her. Chimney placed a c-collar on her and hooking her up to the EKG before looking over at his fellow paramedic.
"She's loosing a lot of blood. The bullet may have nicked a major artery, maybe hit her liver or kidney." Hen sighed as she finished patching her up.
"Alright. Let's load her up." Chimney said as he prepared the backboard.
Chimney and Hen placed Perri on the gurney and placed her into the ambulance. Chimney climbed into the back while Hen climbed into the front, driving to the hospital.
It only took a minute inside the ambulance before Perri started to crash. "She's crashing." Chimney yelled towards Hen before he started CPR. "Come on, Perri. What's our ETA?" Chimney blurted.
"Three minutes out." Hen yelled
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Chimney sighed happily when he heard the beeps on the EKG. "She's stable." He shook his head looking at Perri. "Trying to give me a heart attack, kid?"
"We're here." Hen yelled putting the ambulance in park and rushing to the back to help Chimney.
Chimney and Hen rushed Perri into the hospital, "Officer Perrin Hart, 26 years old, gsw to the lower left abdomen." Hen told the nurse as they headed towards the OR.
"Thank you. We'll take it from here." The nurse told them with a faint smile.
Two days later
Over the past two days that Perri was in the hospital, the 118, Paxton and Yaya were all waiting for her to wake up. Paxton and Yaya argued the entire time they were in the hospital, mostly over Perrin.
Perri's eyes fluttered unsure what they should do, the moment her eyes opened, her olive green with a hint of brown in the middle they focused on the blurry figure sitting to her left.
"You're awake!" A voice smiled
"Chris? What are you doing in here?" Another voice boomed.
Perri groans, her eyes finally focusing enough to make out that it was Chris sitting in the chair to the left of her and Eddie not far from him. "What happened?"
Eddie sighed looking at Christopher, he didn't want to tell her while he was in the room. He looked over at the door and saw Buck standing at the door. "Hey, Chris, why don't we get a snack?" Eddie smiled down at his son.
"Okay. Bye Perri." Christopher said as he followed after his father.
When they were out of the room, Perri's turned her focus to Buck, who was now standing at the foot of the hospital bed.
"What happened?" Perri asked looking at him. She moved to sit up, groaning softly.
Her groans is what made Buck move from the foot of the bed to the side, "What do you remember?" He asked as he helped her sit up slightly.
"Uh, Officer Shore and I arriving to a possible break in or trespassing." Perri started, she stared off to the side trying to recall what happened. "I felt a sharp pain and Shore pulling me behind the cruiser...and that's it." Perri stated as she craned her neck up and to the right and up at Buck, smiling softly the moment she saw his blue eyes.
"Yeah, you were uh shot. Lost a lot of blood too. Doctor said that you're lucky that the bullet missed anything important." Buck explained
"It's a miracle." Perri chuckled.
"Yeah it is" Buck smiled at her.
~~~~~~~~
"Yaya how many times do I have to tell you that I'm fine?" Perri sighed as she walked over to the stairs that lead up to her apartment.
"You were just shot. You shouldn't be walking or climbing these stairs." Yaya rebuttaled, "Let Evan carry you up the stairs." She smiled signaling over to Buck.
"I can walk up the stairs myself." Perri snapped at the older woman hating that she was being treated like a child. Perri managed to walk up a few steps before leaning against the railing of the stairs.
"See what did I tell you. If you popped a stitch, you are to blame." Yaya said as she rushed up the steps. Once she got to the top, she waved down at her granddaughter and her friend.
Buck moved next to her, wrapped an arm around her to help her stand up. "Come on." He told her softly.
Perri sighed as she wrapped her arm around him, pushing all her weight onto him, her left side of her body felt so much better. "If I wasn't high on pain killers, I'd drink my headache that Yaya is giving me." She placed her hand over her covered wound.
Buck chuckled as he started up the stairs, "I'm sure she means well." He smiled looking down at the red head
"She does. She is just a little eccentric." Perri pouted as she moved up the stairs. "And possibly a little drunk."
"What? It's 8:30 at night." Buck said with a confused look.
"Yaya is an avid drinker." Perri told him. "I'm pretty sure that instead of blood running through her veins, its vodka."
"Wow." Buck chuckled. "And...we are here." he said as they got to the last step and to her door.
"Thanks." Perri smiled lightly at Buck and grabbed her keys from Yaya before unlocking the door.
They walked into the apartment, "Your apartment is so...quaint." Yaya looked around. "And Paxton stays with you? Where does he sleep, the bathtub?" she asked looking at Perri.
"No. He sleeps on the couch." Perri told her. Not wanting to argue anymore with Yaya, she smiled at her before walking to her room, leaving Buck and Yaya standing alone in the living room.
"I'm gonna go...make sure cleans her wound." Buck muttered out before walking to Perri's room.
Perri was in the middle of changing, she thought that changing her shirt would be easier. "Damn it..." she groaned out in pain. Hearing a faint knock on the door, "Come in."
"How'd you know who it was?" Buck questioned trying not to look at her.
"Yaya, doesn't knock." Perri smiled at him. "Can you hand me that flannel?" she asked, using her head to signal at the black and red flannel on hanging on the back of a chair.
"Uh yeah..." Buck said as he took a step, grabbing the flannel from the chair before walking over to Perri. He opened the flannel enough so she could slip her arm through the sleeves.
"Thanks." Perri smiled as she turned to face him and buttoning up three middle buttons of the flannel before looking up at Buck. "What are you doing in my room? Yaya driving you crazy already?" she chuckled lightly.
"No, uh, I wanted to make sure you clean your wound and the bandage." Buck told her. He couldn't take his eyes off her, loving her olive green eyes with a hint of brownish gold.
"Like I told Yaya, this isn't the first time I've been shot but since you're here and helping me with my injury." Perri said walking over to the night stand on the left side of her bed and pulled out a first aid kit setting it on the bed and sitting on the edge of the bed.
Buck chuckled walking over the left side of the bed, sitting down on the bed, "You keep a first aid kit in your night stand?"
The first aid kit was the only thing separating the two, Perri's cheeks turned red as she opened the kit, "You never know when you might need a band aid at three in the morning." she said as she moved part of her shirt the side and laying back on the bed.
"You have a fair point." Buck chuckled as he reached for the kit, grabbing gauze, triple antibiotic ointment and medical tape. "May I...?"
Perri nodded, "I really hope that I don't run out pain pills while Yaya is here. If the 118 gets call to this address, because I may or may not have casually killed Yaya."
The entire time that Perri was rambling, Buck listened intently as he replaced the bandages. "I'll be sure to keep a listen out." he chuckled closing the first aid kit. "You're good to go."
Perri smiled at Buck, "You are the best guy any girl could ask for."
"You're welcome." Buck smiled lightly at her. Buck stood up, clearing his throat, "I'm gonna check on Yaya and then head home." he said turning to move towards the door.
Perri shot up and reached out, grabbing Buck's hand, stopping him in his trek. She didn't know whether if it was the pain pills coursing through her veins or all the craziness that has transpired over the passed few days but the feeling of Buck's hand in hers was a feeling she didn't want to loose.
"Wait...," Perri said softly, "...stay. It's late and I know you probably don't want to drive all the way back to your place this late. We have food if you get hungry. Yaya loves an excuse to cook and I don't want to left alone with her."
Looking at the girl who was holding his hand, the same one who he cared about a lot and just got shot only days ago. She needed him and he was worried that if he didn't stay, she would be mad at him. "Fine but only because you asked nicely..."
Perri chuckled but her smile quickly dropped when she smelled smoke, jumping up and rushing pass Buck, out of her room and into the kitchen. She was greeted with a cloud of smoke, "Yaya?!? Are you trying to put me back into the hospital?" Perri snapped as she rushed to open the only two windows in her living room.
"It's not my fault that you have a cheap stove." Yaya exclaimed. Yaya shook her head before grabbing her glass of wine and taking a sip. "And even if there was a fire, we have a firefighter with us."
Perri walked away from the windows and over to the counter, "So, what were you attempting to cook?"
"Your favorite...Karythopita" Yaya smiled pulling the pan out of the oven. "Always made you feel better, Αγαπητέ μου."
"You made that just now?" Buck asked with a goofy smile.
"When you have been cooking as long as I have, it's as simple as pie or in this case Karythopita." Yaya smiled at the firefighter.
"What's karpatboa??" Buck asked butchering the name completely which made the women laugh.
"It's Karythopita. A spiced walnut cake." Perri chuckled. "It's a traditional Greek cake of nutty goodness and spices."
"Sounds delicious." Buck chuckled watching Yaya cutting a slice for him and placing the piece on a plate and handing it to him. As soon as grabbed the plate and a fork, he took a bite.
"Well?" Perri and Yaya asked looking at him, the anticipation of what he thought about the cake had them on the edge of their seats, so to speak.
"It's amazing." Buck said with a full mouth.
"I like you, Buck. Please have as much as you want." Yaya smiled at him before handing a plate to Perri. "Συγγνώμη. Νιώθω καλύτερα." Yaya said to Perri walking over to her, patting her shoulder lightly before moving over to the couch.
Perri smiled lightly, "Ευχαριστώ, γιαγιά." She said before walking back to her room with her plate of karythopita.
Buck followed Perri, when he reached her room, he stood outside of the room, he stopped when he saw that she was crying, he took a step and knocked lightly on the door. "Everything okay?"
The knock on the door made her jump, "Y-Yeah. Reality just set in." Perri sighed. She lifted her hand and ushered him to come into the room.
"Is this the first time you've been shot?" Buck asked looking at her.
Perri shook her head, "No. This would be the third time I've been shot."
"You've been shot three times? Damn." Buck said as he walked over to the right side of the bed and sat down.
"Yeah. First time I was shot, it was my first week as a rookie. I got cocky and got clipped by some drug addict holding up a liquor store." She explained, "Second time was by a 10 year who had found a gun in his yard after a suspect we were chasing tossed it there. Kid didn't know it was real and was pointing it at his mom, I moved so I was in front of the mother, the boy pulled the trigger and I get shot in she shoulder."
"Wow. Glad you were okay." Buck smiled taking another bite of the cake.
Perri chuckled, "Yeah me too." She said taking another bite of her cake.
The two ate in silence for what seemed like an eternity before one of them broke the silence by saying something.
"So what was you and Yaya talking about earlier?" Buck asked looking at her.
"She was just telling me to feel better." Perri told him. She grabbed his plate, placed it on top of hers before setting the plates on her nightstand. "Want to watch tv?" She asked grabbing the tv remote, turning the tv on.
