Chapter 1: Kindness

Dream and his companions landed within what seemed like an open, green field. Somewhat green? It had bits of gold mixed within it as well. Perhaps just half-and-half. The wheat stalks almost made their way to the positive guardian's waist, which is to say, fairly tall. Fairly tall indeed. Their usually thin stems were full of water and nutrition, a beautiful colour adorning them, swaying in the breeze gently. Dream glanced about them to try and catch sight of someone, anyone possibly, that could be used as a sort of tracker. It was their first time showing up here so finding their way around would be tricky. His gloved hand rose up and covered his eyes so he could look, yet no luck prevailed. The harsh sun beat upon him and his friends with its heated gaze, not leaving anything untouched. The field, presumably one of crops near a farm, was devoid of trees that made shade a possibility. Luckily, however, Dream had something of use: his hood. It wasn't very often he got the chance. Most places they went were rather dark and made it unnecessary. Peculiar. He felt a presence near them, a soul, but saw nothing.

"Ink, Blue, you've got your things, right?" The skeleton asked as he drew his hood up, his soft voice not having to strain too hard above the quiet silence around them. He was glad it was next to impossible for his kind to sweat. Stars, if they could as easily as most other species, they'd be in very big trouble.

"We've got them, Dream. I have Broomie, and Blue has his scarf. I also packed some snacks in case we decide to stay for a while and can't find anyone."

Dream turned to Ink, who had spoken. It was kind and rather smart of him to think ahead like that. He gave a smile and nodded, facing back ahead of him. His bow was at the ready should danger be a potential hazard. He'd like to think that it wasn't. Dream didn't want to hurt anyone, or anything, but he would if needed to protect himself or his friends. He felt as Blue stood beside him with a confused glance, with Ink a little behind him. The breeze continued, almost like it was calling to the guardian. Calling him in a specific direction. A specific place. His bone brows furrowed slightly in concentration. Was it speaking to him, or was it simply playing tricks on his mind? Dream was rather unsure. His golden eyelights wandered about before spotting what seemed like a small figure, far in the distance. It was too difficult to see what they were doing or what it was. In his mind, he decided to head that way. A bit of conversation with a native would be necessary.

Dream motioned for his companions to follow as he began to walk toward to sighting. Ink and Blue didn't hesitate, and it was silent most of the way. Nothing but the wind and the crunching of soft ground under their feet. This seemed to bother a certain someone of the trio as he hummed to himself to fill the awkward silence. A soft tune that was familiar to all of them. It eased the slight, unnoticed tension within Dream's body. Why was he so tense? He hadn't much to worry about. Was it the silent fear of possibly being alone in a multiverse they knew nothing of? It could likely be that, but he felt something else. A dreaded feeling that almost made him stumble a bit. That one, singular feeling he only ever got around a certain negative skeleton. He didn't get much time to process this revelation before a tentacle violently sprouted from the ground beside them.

Surprised and a little scared, Dream backed away and quickly drew his bow, hitching an arrow in it. Ink also backed away some while pulling out his brush and Blue brought out some bones to defend himself with. All of them were ready for attack and were about to do so before the tentacle receded back into the stalks of gold and green. The drops from it left a path, along with the pushed wheat that bent from the weight and pressure. The group eased up a little and looked to each other with a gaze of confusion, bewilderment, and caution. Cautious of what lay ahead. They didn't know if they should possibly follow it or continue on their way. Dream was more concerned for the tendril owner's well-being. He knew for certain that the holder couldn't stand bright lights, and a sun with no covering was most certainly in that category. Would it be possible that it could...the guardian shook his head and sighed, and blinked while lowering his bow. Now was not the time to dawdle over frivolities.

"Good to know they're here as well. They can be as lost as us."

Ink whispered to himself, loud enough for the others to hear. Where there was Nightmare, there was Error, and he didn't have the patience to deal with that guy. He swiftly returned Broomie to its hold on his back. Starting in a new place and not even a good 10 minutes later, they showed up. His only question was why. He never thought of the others as wanting to visit an au just for the sake of curiosity. Did they have something planned? Knowing the gang, they probably did. Ink wouldn't be too surprised by it. Wouldn't be the first time Nightmare tried to one-up them without warning.

"I don't believe that they're here to cause chaos. Otherwise they would have done so already."

Without another word, Dream continued on his trek and followed the path of the tentacle. Blue continued right after, with Ink taking the rear. He felt uneasy about all of this. There was the possibility of it being a trap, something to hurt or kill them. The gang was sometimes unpredictable. After all, 5 against 3, they had more heads and ideas. More types of cunning trickery. So while he would follow his friends, Ink would keep his guard up in case something were to happen.

A bit of ways away from the Star Sanses, Nightmare had put his hood up as well, though it was far less effective. He still felt the burning heat and bright glare from the bastard sunlight. Unfortunately, he was not well equipped for this and therefore had no real way to ease it. The most he could do was try and cover up as much of his body as possible to keep the sunburns to a minimum. When they got back to the castle, he was most definitely going to find and kill whoever made the au. They deserved a lot of pain for putting him through this. He would do it to his gang, but they didn't know any better, and he wouldn't fault them for it...at least not a lot. They were still morons.

Killer snickered at seeing his boss's predicament. While he tried to keep it quiet, his expression spoke for him, and made it next to impossible to hide his amusement. It wasn't every day he got the chance to see Nightmare trying to cover himself in what was practically goop. It didn't work in the slightest. In fact, it worsened it. He could tell by the look on his boss's face that the situation was really getting to him. Why it was funny, Killed wasn't too sure of himself, but he couldn't help it. It was just too perfect. Far too perfect of an opportunity. He gave a slight nudge to Cross, who was standing beside him and watching the spectacle with a concerned feeling. It got his attention enough that Cross looked over to Killer with a slight tilt of his head.

"Check this out. When we get back home, he's going to be covered in red."

While Killer did a good job of whispering, nothing got past Nightmare. He heard it clear as day. Mostly because it was quiet around them and even the smallest of sounds were audible. He felt his eye twitch and looked at the two with disdain. Were they trying to get killed?

Horror, Error, and Dust were mostly just looking around. They weren't used to bright lights and open fields. Not Horror or Dust, at least. Error was all too familiar with the concept. While not exactly like this, his anti-void was an open field with pure white around it. So, he was used to it, more or less. He touched one of the stalks of wheat that swayed in front of him. It's soft, bumpy tip was a foreign experience, yet he oddly enjoyed it.

His thoughts were taken as a sudden loud noise made him jump. It didn't very well sound like a good one either. Error was hesitant to turn around in fear of it possibly happening to him as well. He knew full well what happened. He'd heard what Killer said about Nightmare. He didn't hear choking, which meant that there was something else happening that didn't let Killer talk or make any sort of sound. His fingers delicately traced the stalk of wheat once more and he steeled himself with a soft, deep breath, before glancing behind him curiously. While usually the punishments for these were small, Killer did them fairly frequently and was always finding new ways to piss their boss off. So in a place of zero possible consequences, Nightmare wouldn't hold back on his frustration.

Surprisingly, all that seemed wrong was Killer holding his arm, while Nightmare looked at him with a calm expression. The former didn't have anything blocking his ability to talk, so for him to be so quiet was shocking. Not exaggerated, of course. Just in the way that it would make one raise their brows a bit. Soon, he stood up and crossed his arms, the constant stream of black from his eyes seeming to dwindle. Error noticed Killer wasn't looking at Nightmare. Rather, past him. Behind him and into the field. This prompted the destroyer to follow his companion's gaze out among the endless sea of gold and green.

"....Dream is here."

His voice conveyed disgust. Not only towards Dream, but to Ink as well. The goody two shoes creator and protector of all the useless anomalies. As Error stared, he locked gazes with Ink, and immediately glanced away with even more disgust. The day got worse than it already was. He watched as they got closer, seemingly walking over towards them. This wouldn't be a good conversation.

When they met up, Dream and Nightmare stared at each other. Not a word was spoken between them. Only silent blinking. It went on for so long that one would think they were speaking through telepathy. Blue glanced about them in search of someone to find. A human, perhaps, or another monster. There were lots of them in Aus like these. He spotted something sort of close to them, but not close enough to run to without becoming horribly lost. He was new to the area and wouldn't be able to find Dream or Ink easily should he lose where he was. He felt the urge to run over and greet them, to try and get to know them. That was something he loved to do. Meeting new people was so much fun. He slightly motioned to Ink that he wanted to go and check out what it was. The protector looked up and saw it too. He assumed it was what Dream was going towards before this.

"Dream?"

The one in question gave a curious hum and managed to tear his eyes away from Nightmare. With his attention free, Ink pointed to the object in the distance, which at first made Dream confused. He looked over to where Ink seemed so captivated by, then understood. Dream knew just walking away was probably going to annoy his brother, yet he couldn't risk letting this opportunity slip by. He didn't know if the possible human or monster would be there for very long. He looked back to Nightmare with a slightly stern expression.

"I can understand you're confused. I am as well. But I believe that we should move past it for the time being and find someone to talk to. I can easily guess you're just as curious as us."

Nightmare didn't speak for a moment. He wasn't even focused on Dream or the other two. The only thing he wanted was to block out the sun so he wasn't burning up. Each second he could feel his power dwindling. This prompted Cross to speak up for him, able to tell that his boss wasn't ok.

"We can do that."

So, there they were, walking through the seemingly endless fields of wheat. None of them spoke. Not a word. Either they were focused on the mission, or worried for a companion. Or perhaps, they weren't thinking of anything. The harsh sun beat down on them and made it almost completely unbearable. While they weren't able to sweat, they could still feel the heat, and for creatures such as Night it could lead to massive injury if not taken care of. Cross worried deeply for him. What would they do if they couldn't find shelter or shade?

Once they were close enough, Dream gave the go-ahead for Blue to run toward their goal. This excited him. The small skeleton ran off at a full sprint to the stranger. His neckerchief flew in the cool breeze while staying knotted and around his neck. It had been a while since he got in a good exercise like this. And even longer since he felt the wind. Usually they were in aus still stuck underground, so wind wasn't a usual thing to have. He missed it. So very deeply, he missed it. A few times he almost tripped on the bumpy ground, but was able to right himself and carry on his way.

As he got closer, the being in question became clearer, and he felt his eye sockets widen with glee. A human! Blue loved humans. Despite the trouble and hate they caused, he was still so very fascinated by them. His goal as a royal guardsman was to capture one, and while he may not do that, he could still strike up a friendly conversation. Surely they wouldn't be against it.

He had to stop his tracks and skid on the dirt a bit before he could walk up and tap the human on their shoulder. They seemed sort of..short for one. They didn't look very tall, even though he was almost their height, and he was shorter than Ink. Then again, Ink wasn't too short. He and Dream were very similar in that regard. The human jumped a bit and glanced around, then leaped away in surprise.

"Ah! Oh dear...I-I wasn't expecting company. Um…"

By the looks of it, the human was female. Her bright and long hair almost glowed gold under the sunlight, though it was sort of hidden by her brown-tan hat, tied in a knot under her chin. Her dark eyes avoided looking at Blue as she tried to form a sentence. He was intrigued, to say the least. While her skin and hair were bright colours, her eyes and clothes were far darker, and he couldn't help being reminded of a farmer when looking at her. Her sort of soft voice was also rather odd. He didn't usually hear them from humans.

Blue smiled and tried to reassure her in one of the many ways he knew how: a hug. Hugs were always nice. He loved to give them to people. His eyelights turned to stars and he enveloped her within his strong arms. The human flinched from the sudden contact.

"Don't worry, human! I, the Magnificent Sans, will help you to feel better!"

She didn't ease up, and it told him that it was best to let go. So he did. He stepped away with a huge grin.

"What's your name, human?"

The girl didn't seem to enjoy his yelling, as she took quite a few steps back, looking back at him but not talking. The human is shy, he thought. Blue looked behind him and saw that Dream and then weren't too far away. Either he could wait or continue the one-sided conversation. He decided quite quickly to continue. He didn't want to have her leave. He watched as she stuttered a bit on her words before being able to form a sentence.

"Um...my...um...my name..is Seneca...it's...it's nice to meet you, Sans."

Blue smiled with glee, the stars getting larger in his eyes. He was so excited to meet a human. It felt so surreal. His hands went to his hips and he gave a happy laugh.

"Mweh heh heh heh heh! Well, Seneca, it's a pleasure to see you as well! I think that you'd get along really well with my friend Dream! Or maybe Ink! Maybe even both! Do you know where we are? Because we just got here and don't know at all!"

He watched as she perked up at the question. She blinked a few times to try and process it. Either she herself didn't know, or it was complicated to say. He suspected the latter. Sometimes it was confusing to say where you lived. He'd gotten weird questions from monsters and humans alike when he told them where he spent most of his time. Oddly enough, the Doodlesphere wasn't very well known.

"Well...it doesn't really have a name. Not yet, at least….King Asgore is kind of...bad at names and...Queen Toriel is trying to get him to use one that isn't just…'New Home'...um...if you're talking about the field, it's...it's my family's. I live over there.."

She pointed to a house not too far away. It looked rather big for what seemed to be for one occupant. Her gaze went back to Blue with a bit of interest.

"I live by myself...it's...easier that way...and I wouldn't mind meeting your friends...beats being lonely…"

He guessed as much. There didn't seem to be many other signs of life besides them. He felt a little saddened by it. Out here, all alone. It wasn't right for her. He knew he'd go crazy if he didn't have someone to talk to. Blue made it his goal, then and there, to be her friend and have her explore the island with them. Dream showed him and Ink a map of it and it made him want to see what was there. So much to explore. It felt like a dream come true!

A hand on his shoulder snapped him from his daydream, and he looked to his right to see Ink. He looked to his left and saw Dream, then behind him, Nightmare and his gang. All the walking seemed to take quite a bit out of the guy. His eye could barely stay open, and he leaned on Cross and Killer for support. Before any of them could speak or even move, he saw from the corner of his eye as Seneca looked to Nightmare as well, and had a worried expression. She carefully and slowly went over to him. While usually the negative King would try to push her away, he hadn't any energy to do so. This meant she could do all she pleased. But she didn't, instead looking at Blue with concern. It seemed she knew something none of them did. Or perhaps, she was just very good at seeing that Nightmare wasn't well.

Regardless of what it was, she quickly led them to her house, and held the door for all of them to enter. It was a very nice house. Large, decorated, and with a feeling of nostalgia. A sort of feeling that they'd been there before. It likely was that they were used to it from the many Toriels that existed. Once all of them entered, Seneca quickly closed the door, then went over to Killer and Cross.

"If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to look over him...make sure he's ok...I have a spare room he can use…."

The two looked to the other, then to their boss. He seemed a little better now that he was out of the sunlight and what felt like cool air, but he was still weak from the light. He'd need rest in a dark room, and negative energy to make it easier and faster for him to get back on his feet. Cross looked back to the human and nodded. Though reluctant, he was willing to risk the future beating. He wasn't about to let his boss die because of this. Killer was far more reluctant. His arm still hurt from when Nightmare bruised it earlier. The last thing he wanted was to make it worse. Hell, that wasn't even something he wanted. He knew, though, that he'd never hear the end of it if he let Nightmare waste away because he was afraid of being hurt. This pleased Seneca enough, and she gave a slight smile before quickly losing it, and motioned for them to follow her.

They slowly made their way to the spare bedroom she had. It was sort of ranch-style with a hint of space theme. A large, comfy bed situated near a window, left open with black curtains on either side. They flowed effortlessly in the slight wind. Cross could swear he saw stars on it when they passed through the sunlight. Though, apart from that, the room was dark. One could still see into it and what was inside it. A circular rug was underneath the bed and showed a bright, silver moon, craters and all. Around it were bright stars and even the sun far in the distance. The floor beneath was dark wood, and the walls were a bit lighter, though still made of the same material. The ceiling went up in a sort of triangle shape, boards of wood leading up to it, though instead of a chandelier there hung a recreation of the solar system. Perfectly painted and placed.

While Cross and Killer had been busy looking around, Seneca helped Night get into the bed, then covered him up. He soon started to get uncomfortable and looked at her with his single aqua eyelight.

"Get...the cover...off…"

Even his voice was weak. She understood, though barely. It was difficult to tell with it sounding more like a rough, deep, indecipherable mumbling. She removed the cover from him and took the time to even close the window. He wanted to cool off, so she would do all she could to grant him that right. She closed the curtains to darken the room even more to where it was almost completely blind. Her hand traced along the bedpost as she made her way back to the other two, smiling a little to herself. Seneca quickly ushered them out and followed swiftly behind, then closed the door quietly, wanting to make as little sound as possible. Both Cross and Killer had been more focused on the room that they barely even knew what happened, and by the time they did, they were already back outside. They were about to protest but the familiar sound of snoring caught their attention. Seneca glanced to the direction, then to them, and smiled.

"Sounds like he's asleep….um...would any of you need a spot to sleep in? I'm sure I can find something…"

They shrugged and looked at each other again. Neither had expected to be in this predicament, so they weren't completely sure how to react. She seemed to understand and gave a nod and walked back to where the others were. She still had work to do. The sun was high in the sky, it was still early, and she wouldn't leave her crops just because she had new guests. She was stopped halfway by Blue, who gave her a wide grin, pulling Dream up behind him. Dream seemed very uncomfortable with the situation. He didn't know what to say for it, so Blue spoke for him.

"You and Dream didn't get to meet earlier, so I'm introducing you now! I know you two will get along really well!"

He then ran off before either could protest.

Dream and Seneca met gazes for a second before the latter glanced away. He could tell she wasn't used to this sort of confrontation. He heard from Blue how she lived out here, all by herself. What a lonely life. His hand reached out towards hers, and he gave a light smile, in hopes to ease her tension.

"My name is Dream Sans, though you can just call me Dream."

She looked back at him, then to his hand. Her own slowly moved to shake his in greeting. Her voice matched the softness of his.

"Seneca Falls. But...um...just Seneca is fine."
